Want to write for Smashing Magazine?
peter replied to Dale's topic in Tutorials (Serif and Customer Created Tutorials)
Hi Dale, I've just put my usual sidespin on things, by talking about helping out a new user called Blind Lens. https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/11260-totally-and-completely-baffled/ No tutorial will ever work, if the user won't even enter the classroom! Sometimes, a tutor has to step outside that classroom and catch the new guy's attention with...Hey that's a nice camera, I've had something like that before? Have you had it long? Do you want to learn a few instant tricks? What do you want from it? Wanna come into this room and grab a seat; it's better than standing out here? Bye the way, my name is... Now, the second lesson begins. ;) -
What not to test?
peter replied to Sunset's topic in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
Welcome back Hilary. :D Did you go to Resources and get yourself some brushes? Paolo and Daub are the first two that spring to mind. As for swapping OS's, it's just like having two left feet....Hmmm where's the ⌘ key on my Windows laptop? C'mon, c'mon! It's not there To quote the great Homer: DOH! -

Thanks rosa, seems like I've said something right for once: three likes in one go and a positive comment. Basically he's suffering from Why can't humans download drivers/get upgraded, just like gadgets? syndrome. Hands up anyone who can't read/write music? We can hum a tune, say what sounds nice and even give it a review...but to start from scratch, well that's a talent in itself. Software helps loads, as does your own personal muse standing over your shoulder, support from peers goes without saying. Together this holy trinity will provide a solid platform. :)

OK, so a car driver buys a caravan and car and has a panic attack cause he can't drive. Surprised? No! This is you, all the kit, none of the training and all of the regret. Stop, take a breath and tell us a few things: What do you want to do with your photos? Remove red dots from peoples' eyes? Cut the photo to a certain part of the image. Maybe you want to create new montages (Think Sgt Pepper by the Beatles). What camera do you own? Canon, Nikon, fuji etc. Is it a phone camera, bridge camera, What Mac do you own? MacBook Pro/Air, or a desktop model. These new found skills won't happen overnight. It takes about 2 years to be so familiar with a brand new computer/operating system (Windows to Mac OS/Linux/Android etc), that you can teach a newbie from scratch. Cameras not so long. Play with your camera daily, make mistakes, just use the automatic setting first. Train your eye! Read the instruction books; print them out, if they aren't on paper already...read on the bus, bath, lunch break at work. Study one facet, say the rule of thirds. This will become instinctive, your camera should show you this noughts and crosses/tic-tac-toe grid in the view finder/display screen. See pics below. This simple tip, will give instant confidence, as your photos will look a lot better, with zero effort. Now go out and photograph the beach/coast or horizon. Then post them on the forum, the good bad and the ugly! Learn just one new task per week, practice every day and watch your confidence and ability grow. Then once you've mastered that, then you can move on to the next lesson. This is the bit where we can help. Give us questions like, how do I add a sepia effect to a picture? How do I turn a colour picture into black and white? What is exporting? What is RAW? Keep it simple, keep it basic and we'll get you up to speed, before you know it. Some of us are dying to fill the gaps in your knowledge. If your unsure ask me, I might not know the answer, but I'll find out who does. Try it HTH peter PS there is only one stupid question in this forum: Isn't Adobe's Cloud subscription scheme a wonderful idea! Remember: save and backup, backup, backup. Lost memory cards/cameras/phones (on the beach, bus or bar), are a curse, deleted files can be rescued!

Affinity Publisher
peter replied to WalterM's topic in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
Well actually...I use this: AD=Affinity Designer=Vector and Raster: (Illustrator) APh=Affinity Photo=Photo manipulation: (Photoshop) APu=Affinity Publisher=Desktop publishing: (In Design) This clears up any confusion and is a handy short cut. This copies Adobe's style of naming, which also copies the periodic table abbreviations. As seen in the current US TV series Breaking Bad titles. peter -
Yeah! Can't wait.

Well, if they want to pour the copious amounts of celebratory Champagne, from winning shed loads of awards for AP & APu, down our throats...then so be it. :D B)

affinity designer Have you got this months Mogue magazine?
peter replied to My Strawberry Monkey's topic in Share your work
#serifhackingattack Tony Brightman confirmed today, that his own Mac cloud storage a/c had been compromised. APu Alpha test files have now been exposed to their own forum. :o -
Just did. I thinks Art Noueau's cool as well. I like dragonflies too. As for this, I like it. The eye it's got a slight Manga hint to it. This needs wants to be done again as an AD vector! Just wait till the Deviants get hold of Affinity and realise their potential; that bar, will be well and truly raised. Peterdraws...no that's not me

Check out my Pinterest link in my signature or click here...That clown will truly amaze you! http://www.pinterest.com/peter2111 You might like what I've done to user users' works; PIFs for George and the Eejits, Huachee's stunner in her first post. The Text in Flamingoes was my idea, as was my Eggy awards...This forum inspires me as I see certain pictures screaming for text/copy, then it's a race against time, to hunt down that font, texture and positioning before my Muse vanishes. And here's my effort from AD. Using the Pixel Persona. What you'll see here, is a lot of correct ideas all subtley different, but an improvement on the original. As you are probably the only one who knows; the girl's skin colour, the vest tones and finally the type of wood. Is the wood teak, stained pine or maple? Can you post the pictures in order of accuracy and give a score out of ten say, so we can all see who has got the closest/most pleasing picture. peter

print negative
peter replied to bnoel's topic in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
Or were you referring to the orange hue negatives, as found in 35mm films? -
You will be able to use APh files in AD, AD files in APu and APu files in APh etc. The files are basically the same. The different file extensions just tells you and your Mac, which app the artwork was created in and which app to fire up when you click on it. If you want to Flatten your image, i.e make it a JPG/PNG etc then use the Export as function. As there is no equivalent reader app (think of Adobe Reader, for those who just want to view, but not edit PDFs). This would then make you image visible, to all.
