Cealcrest reacted to GMPhotography in Open source Bubble Nebula data from NASA
So I found a free program developed by the ESA (European Space Agency) called FITS Liberator. It basically reads and stretches FITS data and saves it as .tiff files. I've also found some open source images from NASA's Hubble Telescope where they allow you to download their .fits files on some targets for education and experimentation purposes. I've been wanting to know how Affinity Photo would handle an edit like this because one day, I'd like to purchase my own astroimaging camera that can capture narrow band emissions, and so far I am liking the results. I do not however come close to the skill that went into the finished NASA image though so I have a lot of work to get to that point.
The Images here for reference were taken in Hydrogen alpha (Ha), NII and OIII
What was done: Bubble Nebula 3 sets of .fits data brought into FITS Liberator, stretched and saved as .tiff 2x (one minimal stretch to preserve highlights, one stronger stretch to bring out more nebulousness). I then brought these 6 into AP. I brought the 3 minimal stretches into their own window and the 3 stronger stretches into another window. I performed the following edits on each set individually: Selected all three layers, straightened them, and cropped the excess off. As they were all grayscale, I converted them to 16 bit RGB so I could manipulate the layers and create a Hubble false colour image.
I then selected each layer individually and mapped it to a specific colour. This is done in the channels tab at the bottom underneath layers. You select the layer you want, scroll down to the bottom where it says: Pixel Red, Pixel Green, Pixel Blue, Pixel Alpha. To isolate a specific colour, you right click on which ones you don't want and press "clear". For example, for Hydrogen alpha I cleared pixel red and pixel blue, turning the layer green. For NII I cleared pixels green and blue, turning this layer red and for OIII I cleared pixels green and red, turning this layer blue.
I then selected all three, went to the blend options and selected negation.
Once this was done for both sets of the 3 images, I flattened them and copied the stronger stretched version and pasted it into the minimal stretched version. I then made sure they were aligned and used the Blend ranges tool to blend and restore the highlights. This kept the surrounding nebulosity visible but made sure the centre wasn't too white.
I then flattened the image again and did some contrast/shadow adjustments, curves adjustment, clarity adjustment, and a tiny white balance adjustment. Flattened it again and exported out as a tiff and into LR for some more minor adjustments and storage.
All this work, and I fell spectacularly short of the NASA edit, so I have a lot of learning yet to do. I've combined the source images, my finished edit and NASA's finished edit into one image for reference. Same data, so I should be able to get it close to NASA's version with more practice.
I do have a feature request for AP to incorporate .fits files into their fold.

Cealcrest reacted to Henry Stahle in #affinityphotoillustration
Hi, I just started a new hashtag on Instagram: #affinityphotoillustration. I decided to do that because I am working on a picture book / app starting to use Affinity Photo instead of Photoshop. I will show some of my illustrations, all bitmap, no vectors, done in AP. It would be nice to see more illustrators using AP presenting art under the same #affinityphotoillustration tag. To get to now about you, to learn how you use this software and to get inspired from each other. See you on Instagram!

Cealcrest reacted to Greg F in First Affinity Designer Project
This is the first thing I have done with Affinity Designer. It is a collection of banners, cover photos, and profile photos in various sizes for different social media platforms. Artboards and Symbols served me well for this project. I needed to move the red dot on each of the maps, and since it was a symbol, I only had to do it once. Same with the Pig-Heart-Globe group. The export feature let me export all the artboards at once. I'm loving it!

Cealcrest reacted to Mithferion in Free 1000 Photoshop Brushes
Adobe is giving away 1000 Brushes by renowed artist Kyle T. Webster, in ABR format. If anyone is interested (they don't behave exactly the same, tested on Photoshop Elements 10), here is the link for the download page:

Best regards!
P. S.: I hope there are no legal problems with this.
[UPDATE] I copy here my answer about Licensing for these brushes:

Cealcrest reacted to VectorVonDoom in Keycap Project, Partly Graphic Related (AD)
I fancied a fun little project that's only partly graphics related, so you might not be interested but I'm posting it anyway, feel free to ignore it! Someone can always delete it if it's not appropriate.
I often use a vector app when I'm doing these little projects to mark up the basic layout. Not so much in this case as the stones and gems are fixed size but it usually makes it easy to resize, rotate etc the objects, the usual vector advantages. They're nothing fancy, not even super accurate depictions, but they give a good idea of what it's going to look like (or you hope it will look like).
This one will be a custom backspace keycap, or black space key, using some of the bits I hoarded for a project that I didn't end up doing. I've got mother of pearl for the moon, diamonds and gold for the stars, amber, lapiz lazuli, tiger eye, opal and turquoise for the planets and pearl and gold wire for the comet. It's going to ue a sanded down donor keycap as the basis and polymer clay as the background. I've spent a fun afternoon with a jewellers saw and files creating the moon, bit fiddly.
I've never tried using stones and gems with polyclay so it might be a disaster but even if it is it's fun trying. Either way I'll update when I'm done.
Anyway this is the design and mockup.

Cealcrest reacted to LCamachoDesign in Fully lock layers
Currently in Designer a locked layer that is selected can have objects added. I understand the idea behind this is to prevent objects in the canvas from being selected while allowing the layer itself to be somewhat editable.
I think an option to fully lock the layer should be added, this option would prevent any addition, deletion, or any sort of change to the layer. I often have the wrong layer select by mistake and add objects to it, this would reduce the occurence of that situation.
Thanks!

Cealcrest reacted to paolo.limoncelli in Cooktop UI design
Hi!
This year I've been working on home appliances and domotics.
This is a project for an hybrid cooktop controlled by a touch screen.
All done in AD, from early concepts to production assets.
The design has been flipped during prototyping stages, so we ended with two different layouts of the final product.
It also features a remote control for devices
The prototype is working pretty fine, and the customer is going to show it during a European exhibition in Germany.
Finger crossed !

Thanks, quite pleased how it turned out. In case anyone's interested, the split view but with the vector textures hidden as they make it look a mess.

Cealcrest reacted to VectorVonDoom in 1965 Ferrari Dino Berlinetta Speciale (AD)
“This is my Eiffel Tower. This is my Rachmaninoff's Third. My Pietà. It's completely elegant, it's bafflingly beautiful…” I think the last one I’ll do and post but it’s a goodie (well the subject is).
The Ferrari Dino Berlinetta Speciale prototype was unveiled at the Paris motor show in 1965. In my opinion the side view is its best angle, I can’t say that I think the front is particularly pretty. It recently sold for a ridiculous amount of money, over £3.2m/$4m.
As I wanted it to be photorealistic what looks like a fairly simple drawing was plenty of work. There’s a lot of fine detail, like the vector textures I made up for the tyres and wheels, that isn’t necessarily obvious, especially at this reduced size, but if it wasn’t there then it loses some of its realism. I'll probably go back to it in a week or two and see what bits I don't like.
It’s also quite a large drawing, the full size output’s 88.5MP (11520x7680).

Cealcrest reacted to Jethro in Inky iMessage Stickers
Using Affinity Photo for the iPad helped me to create this set of over 50 stickers for iMessage!
They were created from a high-resolution scan of watercolour splotches. From affinity photo on the iPad I used a variety of techniques to mask out the background and separate the splotches from the paper. I also used it to remove dust from the scan (my scanner is far from perfect).
(If masking techniques for removing colour from a textured background is something anyone would be interested in learning, let me know - I’d be happy to put a demo together!)
The black ink lines of the charactres were drawn in Procreate 3, and then the file was re-imported so the characters could be grouped and organised, as well as the outerglow tested to give the ‘sticker’ effect.
A tiny bit bit of photoshop was used at the end but that was only because I could use it to make an action which would auto export all 50+ stickers - I know the ability to record macros is coming soon to the iPad version of Affinity, and when they do I’ll use that in the future instead!
It it was fantastic having the wide colour support as it meant I could really show off the popping reds in my Characters! (I love the one representing Fury, he’s so mad!)
Not only was was this a pleasure to do from the iPad, it was my preferred method! Affinity gave me a much better workflow for creating these characters.
You can view the set on my website: http://www.jethrowilson.com/illustration/ink.php
Or download it from the App Store! https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/inky-stickers/id1187198333
