  1. Welcome to the forums @BoneDigger,

Yes that's possible and not all that difficult. I don't have Designer, just Affinity Photo. I grabbed an image from Pixabay.

    1. Created selection using the selection brush of the white part of the yin/yang. Created a duplicate (CTL+J).
    2. Repeat for the black part.
    3. I opened an image, then just duplicated it to be used in each part.
    4. Clipped the image to each part.
    5. Then placed an Ellipse with no fill, just outline around those images.
    6. I also decided to use the Outline found in the Layer Effects
    7. For fun applied a 3D and Bevel/Emboss.

I would also like to have that feature. If you add a Symbol to a document and don't want it to sync, you can simply unlink it. It you use lots of global symbols and can't keep track of where they are used, it's a) not much different than having a single document with lots of artboards, and b) it's the users responsibility to not make things overly complicated.

One way to implement this, by the way, would be to allow "Place Image" to link an image instead of embedding it, and refreshing whenever the source file changes. Then, your global symbol would be just a document that contains that symbol only.

You need to post your feature request in the Feedback, Feature Requests and Suggestions Forum.

well if you install them to the app ... it would effect it ... /

Are you using a Font Manager? I'm not following how you would install a font to the app? They should be installed to your system, however I'm not running a Mac so may be wrong on that. I have used a font manager app to limit the amount of fonts available to AP, which can slow down at least launching AP.

Your screenshot is the Blend Ranges (cogwheel icon), which is separate from the Layer Blend Modes. Regardless of what Blend Mode you choose, the Blend Ranges will be as your screenshot shows.

The Blend Ranges Graph, is like the graph you get when adding a Curves adjustment. The difference, the Blend Ranges graphs allow a gradual limitation tones, black-white. The Left most node represents Black/Darks, the Right most Highlights/Whites. The top of the graphs are %100, the bottom %0. They are a more defined adjustment, similar to PS Blend-If.

  4. I would agree with knocking out the background first, unless it's also real complex.

Do you use a mouse or pen tablet? I've used a pen tablet for so long, I find it difficult making decent selections using my mouse. I don't use the lasso, just the Selection Brush.  My pen is setup where pressing the bottom button on the side along with press-drag of the pen changes the size. I'm constantly changing the size, and sometimes the hardness.

Now that leaves your main problem, changing from Add/Subtract. Using the selection brush, once the initial selection is made, it changes to Add. I rest my thumb on the Alt (Option) key on my keyboard. When I have to subtract, pressing the Option (in your case), temporarily changes the selection brush to Subtract. Brush where I need to subtract the selection, release the Option key and I'm back to Add. Just make sure you have Show Pixel Selection set in the View menu. Just watch the marching ants. If you brush on the inner side of the marching ants, you're adding, if you brush on the outside you're subtracting. That's what I use anyway. When I zoom in, I'm changing the size of my brush to match the zoom level. Otherwise, the brush will appear larger and harder to manage the selection.

  5. @Mesquito, what type of photography are you shooting? Nightscapes, or astro, or something else? The reason I ask is AP has a couple of Stack options, File>New Stack, and the newest feature, File>Astrophotography Stack. Have you tried one of those?

For aligning, you can use the Difference blend mode to align two layers. Changing the top layer to Difference blend mode. Total black, indicates they are aligned.

  6. Interesting, I can see where web designers would want this new jpeg technology, especially where it is imperative today to provide access for the various devices, desktop/laptop, smartphones, tablets ect. If I understand it correctly, one jpeg-xl image needs to be stored, it then can provide for the proper scale, resolution image for the devices it needs to be displayed on? That sure beats having to store numerous images of various sizes/resolutions, and the coding to call up the correct one.

I found a petition to make Affinity Animator a thing! If you sign it and maybe we can move mountains.

Sorry, resorting to petitioning is not just trying to denoise by counting hands. It's a mass demanding an action. Serif has this forum, which they do not have to provide. Are you familiar with Corel's Help Forum? I can tell you from being an Admin at that forum for over 15 yrs, that any such action would get you banned. Also they don't even like members suggesting how to change their products, they don't listen to even the Mods and Admins.

Serif does pay attention to the Feedback forums, they just don't participate in them. Over the past 4 yrs I've been here, I have seen 1 instance where Serif engaged in the suggestion for adding TGA support. They apparently were on the fence about doing so, and due to the feedback being properly presented, they agreed and added it to the next release.

  8. @dotails

Sorry I agree with @enginpost, by trying to recruit members to join another forum, website, campaign, with it's intent to force a company to change their product is going against the terms of use for this forum. Like, enginpost, I'm just another user/member, and Serif will determine if it is or not.

Serif has been very gracious to allow users to offer their suggestions for improvements and features. It seems you have offered you're request or at least shown that you support a feature request. There's numerous such requests that have been offered several years ago and not made the cut yet, or if they will ever make it. I think it is wrong, just because one does not get one's way immediately or at least in a time they feel it should be, they would resort to such tactics as force, pressuring. Our world (at least on this side of the pond) are too familiar with this nonsense.

Serif produces a product, that are tools, used by artists, authors and the like. You are here using Affinity from Photoshop, Corel, or wherever because those apparently did not have something you needed or wanted. If it's because of the $$$, then maybe start a campaign on your petition site to force PS, Corel or whomever to change that?

the Dodge Brush Tool that it does not work properly

I think it works properly as Serif designed it to.

does not work as I know it from Adobe Photoshop

Correct, because it's not Adobe Photoshop

What a lot of Affinity Photo users have found, is that the Dodge/Burn tools being destructive, have better control using a technique demonstrated in the Legacy Non-Destructive Dodge/Burn Tutorial

What I do goes a step further, which I stumbled across in a YouTube video by PixImperfect Gray Layer for Dodge & Burn is Stupid which by the way is for Photoshop, but can be done just the same in Affinity Photo.

  10. The only way I can think of to not loose those child elements is to use the Merge Visible.

    • Hide all other layers, just having the image layer (group) visible.
    • Right-click select Merge Visible
    • That group will be merged together into a new pixel layer.

Yes, it will bake the child layers into the new pixel layer, however you will still have them, it will not delete or remove them, if you need to go back and make changes. If so just create another merge visible layer.

Other than that, change how Photo applies the adjustment/filter layers, via the Assistant Manager. Instead of them being added as child layers, have them automatically added as new layers. That way, you could rasterize the image layer, without having to drag child layers out of groups ie; ungroup them first.

  11. Today while downloading purchases from my account via the app, if the progress-bar is clicked it resets the progress and the download starts over. I realize for a lot of users it's not a big deal, since they probably have very fast internet downloads. I didn't intentionally click on the progress-bar (%), but hit it instead of the view license. For me this is somewhat of a big deal. My internet download speed is 3MBS max. When the download is nearly done after taking about 20 mins, will cause a person to rip their few remaining hairs out of not only there head, but nose and ears too.

I'm sure this is as designed, and not a bug, but should be. It should take an intentional act of telling the app you want to cancel the download or restart it. Not doing so would just pause it or do nothing at all to disrupt it.

So the new update is broken and you want us to spend, quite some time providing you details before you investigate the issue. It's your software that is broken.

Wouldn't it be great if they would be able to fix it not knowing what to fix? So to answer your question, Yes. The biggest problem they are having is with the Hardware Acceleration, OpenCL. Why? Because computers running Windows have so many variable configurations. When for example, Intel or AMD does an update/fix it can cause what Serif has wrote to break. The GPU configurations with Nvidia and others.

So how is Serif to know what caused Photo to freeze on your system, without you telling them? The only info you provided is you're running Win10, and it is Affinity Photo you're having problems with. With just that little info they could spend weeks trying to guess what caused it. Perhaps you're computer does not meet the basic specs, like not enough RAM, not enough free space on your HDD, your graphics card's drivers are not up to date. You could be running another app that is causing a conflict. <--I also use Black Magic's Davinci Resolve 17. It started acting up when I updated my Nvidia drivers, which I needed to be updated for Affinity Photo. So I had to roll back the drivers update for it.

Coming off as you done, is not helpful, so you apparently had a bad hair day, don't understand computers, or just want to complain and not be of any help. If it's the latter, then don't expect them to be very helpful to you.

It was a test image in RAW, and unfortunately i have deleted the original now.

This doesn't help Serif fix the problem if there is one. They can't look over your shoulder, and have no idea how to try and reproduce it. Others, myself included, would like to know this info. Please at least post more info about it since you deleted the file.

    1. What camera did you use? Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, Hasselblad?
    2. Lens used?
    3. Have you tried with another file, same RAW format? Do you get the same issue?
    4. Did you first open the file in Develop Persona? IF so, what if any, adjustments done in the Develop Persona?

I've tried replicating it using the RAW (Canon CR2), I have, numerous different ways, and can not.

  14. I'm going to make a guess at this, since your equation does not equal 100%, in Photo anyway.

With the brush opacity set at 50%, the first stroke will yield that amount. However, the second brush stroke is then applying 50% of the already 50%, so the total would be 75%. The first is half, the second is half of a half, or 25%. Keep doing this and you will arrive at 100%. I maybe (probably) wrong, but it's what is logical.
