Web-based graphic apps are not for serious work. Even Figma's workflow is optimized for composing layouts from imported components, with most of the heavy lifting being done in the Adobe suite. Even then, it draws heavily on resources. One of the three developers behind the open-source project you've linked to won't even reveal their real name. People's eccentricities always get in the way of either scale or output when it comes to open source. Management with authority is required to organize and focus a group of people towards a single vision, and that authority comes from the financial hierarchy inherent to any business. Throwing together an open-source web app from existing vector libraries isn't the answer. It's been done many times before. You need a serious organization of a critical size with compensation for developer skill, time and effort, and that means paying for people's living expenses at an absolute minimum.

Problem is, they are developing it as a web app.  That has never been a good thing for something intended to be a professional creative tool with an extensive feature set, so I for one am not really giving them the time of day, much less would I consider investing in them.  Even if they did manage to pull off a decent feature set, would my documents still be saved locally on my computer, instead of in some cloud solution where I would have less trust in maintaining control over access to them?
Ideally I would be looking for something designed natively to run under macOS, with a native macOS interface, and designed to take advantage of its unique technologies.  Failing that, a second choice would be a cross-platform app that at least makes a reasonable attempt to fit in well in the macOS environment, still running natively on the hardware in front of me (not on some server under someone else's control).
Web apps have some utility as add-on products in various situations, but they are never really optimal for primary creative / productivity apps.

I'm just going to voice my support for a freehand or lasso objection selection tool in AD. Objects you want to select aren't always neatly concentrated for easy encompassment within a rectangle.

At home we had two affinity photo licenses, but we're not even going to download the latest version anymore . . .  We've opted to pay Adobe and have two new Photoshop subscriptions. This is a goodbye to this stage of affinity, we were already very tired of waiting for neural filters or AI that never came, but this move leaves us totally out of the affinity game. Good luck to all.

This will be broken as every similar pledge has been broken on other aquisitions. Maxon promised the same for Zbrush. 2 years later: subscription only and no real update in all this time. It is just marketing trying to soften the blow to the users - IT WILL BE BROKEN.

And off I am. I have enough of getting f***ed over by such aquisions. My last "no we will continue perpentual licenses, don't fear there will be no changes" has been Zbrush. Serif, or Canva - you just lost a customer.

😱It is clear that the Affinity suite will eventually migrate to a subscription model, as this is Canvas' business model.
😱In other words, there's nothing planned after version 2.

Megnusin got a reaction from Flashvipe in Endlessly stuck on Loading Document for a specific document
I'm in the same situation. I'm stuck trying to open a document with embedded images that I keep on iCloud. I haven't moved the file recently, however, it just stopped working since last time I opened it. I've tried the steps suggested in the thread to no avail.
If someone wants to take a look at the file, please send a DM or share a dropbox link here. I can't share the file publicly.
I'm running Designer 2.2 for MacOS. I've sent the file to a friend to open it on their M2 MacBook, but it's stuck loading there too.

A big thank you for your help and your long answer! This works perfectly fine - unfortunately just for one picture, but its great anyways.

Is a "blur-beneath"-effect planned for Affinity (Designer/Photo) in the future?

Even if i can't use it in my webdesign (because i wanted to do slideshow, where a little part of the pictures is under the website menu) I learned a decent new function of Affinity Designer.

Thanks and have a nice day! :)

Edit: To clarify: I think you mean they are not undoable. Deleting a Snapshot certainly cannot be undone, on my system. Once it's deleted it's gone forever. It feels like a warning about it not being undoable would be a good idea.

hey, so I've been trying to open my affinity publisher file for days now. it keeps saying loading 1 document and never opens. it can be loading for nearly a day and still not open. it uses so much of the laptops RAM to try to open the file but never actually opens. I am using a MacBook Pro 2017 version.

I've never used GIMP or Photoshop, so I don't know how common this feature is, but how about an option in the Edit drop-down (and also the right-click context menu) for Paste To Pointer. This would be useful in both Photo and Designer. The software I've always used it in was Corel PhotoImpact X3, and it has become a great convenience to me. Having the copied object attached to the pointer helps me when I'm zoomed in to an area where the original copied object is not located (saves having to zoom out to pick up object, move to the needed location, and then zoom in to paste precisely). It's also convenient having the object already attached to the pointer and, therefore, faster.

Megnusin reacted to clemens.holleis in Affinity Designer does not properly restore snapshot when symbols are used
    Hello!
I encountered the same issue. After a short test it looks like the data inside a symbol are not respected / stored by a snapshot- only position and scale of symbols are.
Let's say you are taking snapshots as milestones in a design process this can lead to huge problems.

    Imagine:
designing a file using symbols You create a snapshot like "Open Data" to be able to roll back to this state to extract elements or tweak the design once again.  You now go through cleaning up the document: delete some stuff, rasterize data inside the symbols and so on Now you create a snapshot "Clean For Export" If you now want to restore the "Open Data" snapshot you are screwed because all contents of the symbols will be rasterized in this state of the document too.

I first recognized this issue in a file for an app screen design where I had 9 snapshots for different states- needless to say these are not very usable anymore since the symbols like the navbar and icons got edited in the older snapshot versions.

Are there plans to fix this behavior?
    Thanks and
    best regards,
    Clemens

Megnusin reacted to lepr in Stroke path with brush? (is it possible AP?)
Using a Curve as a path along which any brush-based tool can be stroked is not the same thing as AD's Vector Brush Tool.  For example, think how quickly and simply a two node Curve object can be made to closely match the catenary curve of a power line ruining the sky in a photograph, and then you just tell the Inpainting Brush Tool to use that Curve instead of your mouse/pen/finger movement.

So basically they refuse to add this simple, essential feature to Designer in hopes that people will buy an entire new program just for that feature, and even then, the workflow sucks ass, because you gotta open an entirely different program each time you want to enable hyphenation for a new textbox. When they already have the code in place for hyphenation to work in Designer after being enabled in Publisher. Am I the only one that sees how insane that sounds? You literally need to prove you own another one of their programs to use a basic feature in the first program.
This kind of decisions are what steered me away from Adobe, because they ruined Illustrator AND set a subscription fee ontop of it. Pure corporate greed. Don't become Adobe, please.
And here's a heads up for you, Serif. No one will buy Publisher just because of that one feature. You have equal chances of putting people off your entire software suite as you are to make an additional software sale. Instead, try to make Publisher its own thing instead of "Designer with Hyphenation included, but not so designer-y". I'll give you an example - you already have pixel persona in Designer. So why would anyone buy Photo? Because it is its own thing, giving people raster options in depth. What you did with hyphenation would be like taking the brush tool away from the pixel persona in Designer. Would it make more people buy Photo? Probably not. Would it irritate the heck out of people? Surely.
Your approach will likely lead to more and more people pirating Publisher and not feeling bad about it because of your frankly stupid practices. Get your sh*t together please.

I need this! I already have publisher but I often use designer because it's more flexible using artboards, it's absurd that designer doesn't have it, I have to copy the text to publisher and bring it back to affinity designer, it's sad.

Obviously. The trouble is that it wasn't intentional, and the app didn't help me find about it. I'd have expected this panel to let me spot said files, or open a relevant panel.
I searched the help for "object", "link", "file" and got nothing. I finally found the "Resource Manager" which showed no particular error. I removed some files and the error went away.
I learned about that manager along the way, so that's a win!
