My apologies...I talked to an expert friend and he explained that even in Illustrator the same thing happens that I am seeing in Affinity--just that I have forgotten. Every shape/object drawn is on ITS OWN LAYER. Eventually you make groupings to simplify things. Thank you all for making the effort to help me.

Maybe with my attachment showing my silk screen art I am trying to recreate in Affinity will clarify what I am asking you. The artwork seen on top of the triangular trees are all one color so I thought it should be on one layer. However in drawing the star (in black) every single shape was shown on a different layer. I grouped them in order to not have dozens of shapes on different layers. Still I should be able to draw every thing on one layer unless I do an "Add layer" which I would do for the two colors for the triangular tree shapes later.

The star burst I am talking about has separate spokes radiating around a center circle. As it is now each spoke is on a separate layer which makes no sense since all of this design will be in one color eventually. Actually my design will be a three color silk screen so the part I am working on will be one color. Why would each spoke become a separate layer? I start at one point and then close it for a spoke and repeat.

When I watched a vector drawing in a tutorial It seems that all parts are on the SAME layer until you needed a new layer. I was drawing a star burst and each leg was on a different layer which makes no sense.

Sorry do not know what you mean by tags above. I am a newbie on Affinity...drawing images to be the same color I expected it to be all on one layer but they are not. What should I do?

Go to "File" on Tool Bar, open dialog box to "Document Setup" then to "Units" and set to Inches.

How do you convert rulers & guides to inches in Affinity Designer?

Does Affinity Designer have a RULER feature in inches?

I would love to use Affinity Designer except it does NOT have a RULER feature in inches. This is essential for a designer!!! You pull out rulers from the sides and top and bottom of the page. Look at Illustrator or QuarkXpress for what I am talking about. It's been a while since I checked in so perhaps Affinity has finally put this feature in??? --- Amy Y.
