  1. I would also like to be able to define preset crops with absolute sizes e.g. 3840x2160. Please add, or bring back, this feature.
  2. Thanks, that's the effect that I want but I might need a few more hints. I am quite new to Affinity and even back the PhotoShop CS3 that I used to use, I have not tried this before. I have recently managed to apply levels and curves selectively: select the area, create an adjustment layer, and edit the selection (typically but it a bit) but I cannot seem to apply that the procedure to this case.
  3. I have an image of a model against a featureless wall. Well, there is no deliberate or desirable featuring to the wall but there are imperfections and shadowing that I don't like. I would like to apply some blur to the wall but not the model. I have tried a few ways but I cannot seem to get it right. I have creates a duplicate of the background and selected the wall successfully but now I need a mask from the selection so I can hide the model and allow the original unblurred image to show through. I cannot seem to get it quite right. Any suggestions?
  4. It does seem to be connected with the external monitor. After R C-R's tip got it working on the laptop display (no external display), I worked there for a while. Later, I connected the external monitor and the dialogs disappeared again. However, now I had an idea, disconnect the monitor, restart Affinity, check that the dialogs worked (they did). connect the external monitor, and check again. They were still working. A bit of a nuisance but it's a temporary solution. Provided that it works, it could be just chance that it worked this time and this is not the real explanation.
  5. Monitor disconnected and laptop rebooted and the Levels dialog worked - wow! Mind you, a number of other tricks worked just once, e.g. starting Affinity with Ctrl and reinstalling, so the champagne is staying in the fridge for the moment. I cannot connect the second monitor and try or do anything serious at the moment as I need to concentrate on my day job. Thanks for the suggestion.
  6. Just in case that was the issue, I tried Cascade windows and other options from the task bar. I still cannot see the Levels dialog.
  7. R C-R, thanks. I use multiple monitors but both are connected at the moment and I still cannot find the missing dialogs. I have not changed the configuration of the displays since installing Affinity (the first install or the reinstall yesterday). The external monitor is to the right of my laptop; the laptop is always open when in use. I have heard of bugs such as that in other software but it does not seem to match my symptoms as the configuration is stable and I have seen the dialogs appear and disappear with no hardware changes. E.g. they worked just after the reinstall but when I closed and reopened Affinity they had disappeared again.
  8. Granddaddy, thanks - at least that makes me feel less like I am going mad. At the moment, it is easy for me to reproduce since it is not working at all (except for one session after a reinstall). For me, closing and reopening, even rebooting does not help. My set-up is pretty much the same as yours.
  9. In desperation, I deleted and reinstalled Affinity. That was very painful (see another thread by me). At first, it seemed to help, I could get the levels dialog again. However, one restart of Affinity later, they have stopped working again.
  10. it started working for a while but now has stopped again. This is highly frustrating. I am trying to process a batch of images and this is wasting a huge amount of time.
  11. Thanks for trying. I was hoping someone from the company might respond. I am going to try a reboot just in case that helps.
  12. Ah, after successfully setting the levels for one image, the problem came back on the next. I must be accidentally hitting some odd UI option but I have no idea what.
  13. That works - thanks a lot. I guess that I had accidentally selected some odd UI option but I have no idea what. I tried all sorts of things within the app e.g. pretty much every option on the View menu but it didn't. This did allow me to solve one other oddity. I was accidentally losing all of the tools; I noticed that "Tab" was a hot key for that. I was using Tab within a dialog but every now and then it had this unexpected effect. I have learned to be careful where the cursor is when I press Tab. It was happening with all documents and not just the Levels dialog but also the White Balance Adjustment dialog. I hope that I don't come across as negative. I like Affinity but there is a bit of a learning curve. I was using PhotoShop CS3 for years and did not become an expert at that either.
  14. Thanks. I am double clicking the icon just to the left of the layer name. Usually, this brings up the levels dialog but yesterday and again today it stopped working. Also, if I press Ctrl+L to add a level layer, it adds the layer without showing the dialog first as usual.
  15. This problem has reoccurred. I cannot figure out what caused it and, so far, I have not been able to correct it. For the moment, I cannot adjust levels or white balance. Help!
  16. I am still struggling. Part of the issue is that in Affinity, the image is displayed against a dark grey background which makes it hard to judge whether it is a true white. In the websites, it is displayed against a white background which makes any deviation from white obvious. Another issue is that the Picker in the white balance dialog does not set the tint. I have had to play with that manually to try to correct the white. I now have the image almost correct when it is full size but the scaled images (e.g. 900px and 400px) still appear wrong. All the sizes (full res, 900, and 400) are created by a batch job conversion. The only difference in the settings is the size (W and H columns in batch job). There is a difference in how the web site serves the images. The smaller ones are in an HTML page using <img srv=".... For the full resolution, the server simply returns the jpg (not embedded in HTML). So, this might be causing the difference. However, again, there is the factor that the background is black in this case. So, maybe the image is wrong in all locations but I only notice when it is against white background.
  17. After some random mucking around and several restarts, the dialogs came back but I still don't know why they stopped for a while.
  18. I am quite a new user still finding his way around Affinity Photo. I have just hit an odd problem. The dialogs for levels or white balance adjustment will not appear. Normally I can click on the icon in the layer and the dialog will appear so that I can adjust it. Today, nothing happens when I do that. Also if I add a new Levels Adjustment layer (with the menus of Ctrl+L), a layer appears in the list of layers but the dialog to set the levels does not. Similarly for the white balance adjustment layer. I have tried resetting the studio, restarting, even rebooting, but none of these have helped. I am using Windows 10.
  19. Thanks. I see nearly the same. Different image dimensions. RGBA/16 - sRGB61996-2.1. Different camera details. Is this is the most apporpriate setting for web images? Maybe it is just that my monitor or eyes needs calibration
