I asked about the sampler because I believe one pixel is not representative and that 3x3 or 5x5 pixels is what is needed. The object of the exercise is to change one zone to another, selected zone and this is done by changing the L value to another, predetermined value at the sampled point. Therefore, it is necessary to follow the change in L value that occurs when the curve is manipulated as demonstrated in the video.

Having tried out the various ways of using the Info Palette I have a much better understanding than I had when I started. Do you know how many pixels the sampler reads? The last stage of the process which I am trying to emulate, has not yet been achieved. In the video, when the picker is used from the Curves Adjustment layer, a column of figures appears alongside the column generated by the sampler from the Info Palette. Thus, there are two identical columns of figures. When the curve is manipulated the L value from the picker changes following the movement, whilst that from the sampler is fixed. Without being able to read the L value from the curves adjustment the idea behind the zone adjustment process is no longer valid.

Thanks, MEB for your comment. It is not about the zone system that I need help, but about how to use the tools in Affinity Photo to achieve the same result that Photoshop gives when using the Info Palette, Colour Sample tool and Curves adjustment layer. Using the information which you have already supplied the result is almost there but not quite and it would be good for Affinity Photo and me if the sequence could be completed.

I wonder if someone would be kind enough to help me, please? The work flow I would like to copy is best described in a video by Ian Barber, which shows what I used to do in Photoshop and, having bought Affinity Photo and cancelled Photoshop, I now need to do in AP. The video is rather long but the process is described starting at just before the three minute mark and is completed at around 10 minutes. I am confident that using AP the rest of the process described can be completed. I am using Affinity Photo 1.5.3 on an iMac with the latest, up to date OS. The video is:-

Thank you again, Alfred, I'll post it again in the correct place. -

Alfred you are correct, I bought the version on sale at the App Store on my iMac so tell me, please, where should I post my question? -
I wonder if someone would be kind enough to help me, please? I have been trying for 3 days to get an answer by twice posting my question into the appropriate forum and, so far, had no replies. Could this mean that my question has not been seen or that what I want to do cannot be done with Affinity Photo but only with Photoshop? That would be a pity as I have bought Affinity Photo and cancelled my payments for Photoshop. I seem to be going round in circles and getting nowhere, please help. I started a thread yesterday on this topic and came to stoo because I was unable to explain exactly what I wanted. Well, here is a video using PS and I want to do the same using AP. It would be of enormous help if some knowledgeable person could spare a few minutes to look at how the lightness in a part of a black and white image is measured and stored in the info palette and altered to another value which also appears in the info palette. Once the change has been done I think I can manage the rest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0byRKWZslRI

Working on the belief that pictures speak louder than words the following video demonstrates what is done in PS and I would like to do in AP:- Unless you are interested in how the lightness value varies depending on which colour space you are working in my quest starts here which is about about 3 minutes after the start of the video and loading of the info panel. Once the change to the image has been demonstrated the rest I think I can manage.

Thank you very much, MEB, for your instructions which, with a slight amendment, I was able to follow and, so far so good. In the info panel there are 2 columns both of which I set to LAB then the target icon was dragged and dropped onto the image and the L value was displayed in the left hand column. What I am now looking for is the right hand column to display the same L value as the left hand column when the picker is dropped on top of the target and then for the L value in the right hand column to follow the changes when the curves graph is moved whilst the figure in the left hand column does not change. After several attempts I am not able to make this happen it looks as though it is not possible to switch the picker off. I hope this can be sorted out as everything is looking good.

I am very new here and coming from PS I have lots of questions and I hope I am posting them in the correct place. Working in LAB, what I want to do is to select a point on a black & white image, mark that point and have the reading displayed in the info palette. Then, with the curves palette open, move a pointer or a cursor to the previously selected point and for that position to be shown as a marker (a small circle) on the curve corresponding to the L value of that point. This is very easy to do using PS and is part of a work flow in modifying tones in images. I have tried using the Sample colour picker but that appears not to have the facility to mark the selection and I cannot find an adjustment tool that I could select on the Curves adjustment layer palette. Am I missing something or am I trying to do something beyond the capabilities of AF?

It seems to me that this tool could be very useful and yet I am not able to find any examples of it being used in AP. Assuming that this tool is the same as the History brush in PS then one very good use is in dodging and burning. I have used a panel in PS which is based on this but I have no idea of the steps involved in making dodging and burning happen all I can say is that the process is very flexible. Is there a knowledgeable person out there who can help, please?

Thank you both very much indeed, most helpful.

When I press alt and click the mask I see where I have painted, how do I return to the masked image? I thought I knew and have tried a number of different possibilities without success.

Thanks MEB for responding, perhaps I did not word my question very well. I have been using Curves on Gimp and Photoshop for many years and have a passable understanding on what they do so here goes again. On the left hand side of the curves panel and just under the X axis is a box showing RGB which, when selected, gives a short menu of Gray, RGB, CMYK and LAB. From what I had seen in a video, I also expected to see Red, Green and Blue. As for the movement of points with the arrow keys I look forward to its implementation.

Thank you very much indeed, MEB, we live and learn.

I am very new to Affinity Photo and have been looking at preparing and using Macros. Is there a short cut way to turn the panel on/off, please?
