  1. Thanks
disprint got a reaction from walt.farrell in Designer crashes when copy or cut.
No, app just freezes, and there is no response.

There are three ways to solve this issue (that apparently isn't an issue at all 😉) :

    1. The unit could be picked from the default document settings, and this is how it is done in CorelDRAW and Illustrator, as far as I know.

    2. There could be an option in Settings to choose whether to always use a certain unit (for PDF or maybe for all documents) or use the embedded unit.

    3. There could be a menu in the PDF options dialog, same as the DPI menu, where we could choose unit or leave as is.
This setting should then be remembered (this is how DPI works), meaning that you would only have to change it once.
So no, it would not be the same as manually clicking the 'ruler menu' every time after opening a PDF.

Just joining the thread some months later, in Affinity Photo 2, is it now possible to change the default units from pixels to inches? It just seems so laborious to have to continue to change each new image into inches from pixels, unlike in Adobe PS where you can specify the units of choice as a default.

You seem to miss the point, as an important tool in illustration (and time saving) Serif should have already inluded it, it's not like people are asking for something impossible and a function people seem to want, "nice to have" as you say even for you.

It’s interesting to see folks reply to requests for this feature, saying it’s not important, or that other options exist so stop crying etc.  (not in every case).
im more of a hand drawn graphics guy.  And this is a humongous part of my work flow.  Drawing shapes organically and tracing them and using the paint bucket is a super simple and effective way for me personally to work.

serif has done an incredible job with their suite.  Folks like me just want to see a autotrace or live trace or vectorize feature done well and in the native program.  So many other programs with this feature are clunky or ineffective.  No one can agree that there is one autotrace to rule them all.  This was literally THE feature I had hoped for.  I think a lot of the people who counter complain and say it’s not necessary or tel folks to go elsewhere just don’t use it or need it.  It IS in fact an important part of a vector workflow for some people, although the fact serif hasn’t put it in yet and may never leaves me wondering if there is something wrong with ME and maybe I just need to learn to do vector design differently.  Death of a technique I guess in favor of sameness.

Thank you. I could almost just uninstall Designer now 😐
Affinity Photo is still quite excellent though.

Here's a thread from 2014...  It's crazy to think that you would have implemented this by now (2022) unless you're going the Reason Studios route, "We know what you need, you don't!"  unless I'm missing something....

THIS has been asked for since 2014….as others have pointed out, if I may paraphrase ….
It is incomprehensible and disingenuous AT BEST… to suggest this is NOT one of the TOP requests coming from those using or /continually forced to use ILLUSTRATOR BECAUSE OF THIS MISSING FEATURE.
I would venture to say in my peer group 100% of them have needed, used, or would use this feature. It’s a no brainer.
OK …I get it…. that “you” claim that it will not be released until “you” are satisfied…..but maybe many if not most of us would be happy with a product that was 75-80%  “there”….. and willing to accept a caveat that this function is available  “as a work in progress”.
Is it really true that AFTER 8+ YEARS your engineers/designers do NOT have a viable working option? After ALL of the AMAZING improvements that have evolved in this timeframe?…on all of the suite?
    BS.
…when SO MANY other viable work arounds from lesser companies abound?
    BS.
I (we) LOVE the Affinity family…but this ONE THING borders on INSULT.

Autotrace has been a part of Illurator forever and is surely an import part of any vector based app. In Illustrator it can be a bit random but, like others here have said, at least it gives you something within the app to work with and get to know. I'm disappointed that it's not already apart of V1 let alone V2.
Having ditched Adobe for Affinity some years ago, for lots of reasons, it's important for usuers/supporter of Affinity to be heared. Do we have to come to Nottingham to bang on some doors?

    I know Vectormagic.
It is the tool I am currently using. But it is something other than an integrated workflow.
I'm sure there's a specialised solution for every little shortcoming in the Affinity programmes. But it involves importing, exporting, compatibility problems, formatting etc. every time.
It is this seamless approach between tools that makes Affinity programmes so enjoyable.

I remember asking a few times every year or so apart about auto trace & got the same 'we are looking at X to make sure'. been a user since the very beginning in the beta stages. really disappointed it still is not a feature
I know many will say 'oh its not a feature everyone uses', blah blah bloody blah.
but thats such a shite deflective argument, since there are many features users dont use within the software, but its still feature
PLEASE SERIF, PUT IN AUTO TRACE!!!
it is highly important & helpful for artists that draw on paper & want to transfer & would rather not go from one software to the other.
if a free piece of software can do it, you can
PLEASE SERIF, PUT IN AUTO TRACE!!!
even if its not 100% & I needed to do a bit of editing, id be happy, since updates can tweak out the bugs & make it better thru updates, id be fine with that.
as long as I knew that I could have auto trace & not go from one software for one specific feature, to then bring into designer. I would be super happy.
PLEASE SERIF, PUT IN AUTO TRACE!!!
also thru having it in & it may be buggy, you at least will have people to report back saying 'oh this is a wee bit off, here is my file to test out & I have a screencast to show what's gone wrong'. that helps.
again, having it & working on it is better than completely ignoring it & sending others away because you choose to not talk or say anything about it.
user retention is the key & talking about it openly is helpful to yourself & the community
PLEASE SERIF, PUT IN AUTO TRACE!!!

Fact is: I bought 2.0, although probably the only new tool I will use will be the shape constructor.
But I hope that by buying it, I have contributed to making functions such as the trace in the designer possible.
How can you make it clear to Serif / Affinity how important this function is to the community?
It is the great advantage of this company that it is small and flexible enough to listen to the wishes of the users - I hope they also use this advantage.

Exactly, why even bother with adding measure if it's nonpersistent. 90% times when you need to measure something is to show the client / contractor what exactly they dealing with.
So far it's the biggest dissapointment in 2.0
