MartinB78 got a reaction from dmstraker in [Mini Tutorial] Fake Acrylic Painting
    Hello,
here my Workflow for faking acrylic paintings in Affinity Photo using FotoSketcher(Freeware).
I'm using FotoSketcher(.com) for the brushstroke effects. (PhotoArtist, AutoFX AutoMagic or Topaz Impression should work too, but not tested)
Form the source image i generate 4 images with different minimal brush sizes, normaly 40, 20, 10 and 5. FotoSketcher settings: Painting 7(Gemälde 7).
Have a look at the attached afphoto file. (It's simple, but complicated to explain)
The images with thick brush strokes(40, 20) are used for the background and the remaining two images(10, 5) are for the subject und fine details.
In Affinity Photo (or Designer) the image with bigest strokes gets loaded and used as main background and the others used as layers on top.
My next step is adding layer masks and inverting (strg  + i) them. A white brush on the mask is used to paint back the details. The Layer with fines strokes is only used for the face/eyes and other important details.
Affinity Photo only: Now i combine the layers to a new layer for a paint effect. Dublicate the layer and apply "find edges" filter. Invert it (strg+i) and use curves to intens the borders. These two layers are needed for Lighting-Live-Effect and texture settings and notice the layer blending settings.
Because i used a bw image as sample, i added some colour with extra layer ("Basecolour").
The last three layers adding some artistic feel to image.
Colour variation layer: Colour variation are often used in paintings to fake details and add more life to a images.
Warm layer: Add a warm orange colour tint to sun lit surfaces.
Cold layer: To add a blueish ambient tint to some shadows.

    ps.
You can use load you own brush as image in FotoSketcher. In Brush.zip are my test brushes.

hi, i just saw your reply, you use the 6 circles, the original file was in inkscape (tutorial here by Nick) but you can skip the first parts already since the GOLDEN circles were already made in the template.
you copy the different sizes of circles and make them intersect to cut/visualize the design.

I'm sharing this template for golden ratio, original tutorial I followed was for Inkscape which I was previously using before falling in love with Affinity Designer. Original work is from Nick Saporito on youtube. Basically you use the set of "Golden Circles" to create an illustration by intersecting the different sizes of circles. Hope you guys enjoy using it for your own designs!

It's the organic look that can be achieved with a tool like AD - even if the look is a little out of fashion - that really is the most fun.
Ink and watercolor-like effects - vector brushes.
I am including the .afdesign file for digging around in.

Not surprisingly - this week has been a small Hell of Typos week for me!

    Thanks

I am attaching the AD file here. Hopefully this is permissible.
Pulling open the actual working file does wonders for demystifying how a thing was built.
This is all brush strokes - including the big patches of water around the whale that look like fills.

What I would like to confirm.
Are the strokes packaged into the working file when saved?
That is - if you don't have the brushes - will the art in the file work and look correct when opened in AD on a machine that doesn't have the brushes?

In the old Expression3 application an art file would contain the brush/strokes it was created with.
This was one simple way to pass brush/strokes along. The file contained the strokes themselves.

MartinB78 reacted to Chris Heath in Design a Decorative Border Pattern
I posted my second class on Skillshare this week.

In this class I demonstrate how to use a grid and Affinity Designer's Symbol functionality to create seven decorative border patterns.

With Symbols, you can design a repeat unit, turn it into a symbol and watch the entire pattern dynamically change while making changes to one instance of the repeat unit. The symbol also updates on the fly.

The Affinity Designer files I'm using can be downloaded from within the class. Here is the link: http://skl.sh/2ylcYPr

You can use this link to sign up for two free months of Skillshare Premium and watch my classes for free. The sign-up section is at the top of the linked page. I hope you find this class useful.

MartinB78 reacted to dmstraker in Blurred high-pass sharpen
Here's a cute variation on sharpening that seems good for faces, based off the video here. It uses the Bilateral Blur, which is good at preserving edges while it blurs the rest of the image (eg. to stop sharpening skin).
Duplicate layer Apply live Bilateral Blur filter to top layer. Adjust to soften image while preserving main edges. Apply live High Pass to top layer. Adjust to suit. Blend the top layer, for example with Hard Light (or other contrast mode). Using live filters means you can still play with the settings. You can also play with using other blur modes in step 2. Keep an eye on the greyed top layer (turn off bottom layer to see this). If you can't see any edge, you won't get any sharpening.

Here's another quickie with AP (and Paolo's brushes) and some other comment about the app (from a painter perspective)

I love a lot of things but just to name a few:
    1) Stock panel for searching quick references it's pure genius
    2) Liquify is faaaaaaaaast as hell
    3) realtime blend layer system it's a dream

I'm fighting hard with this major issues:

    1) Brush resizing delay (draggin' pen or mouse)
    2) Brush size tooltips are a nightmare (almost unusable)
    3) Eyedropper inconsistency (miss 40% of the picks)
    4) Brushes become laggy and slow very quickly (after adding a texture and a couple of tip)

:)  Ok, I know maybe aren't really serious stuff for a photographer workflow but as a wrote, from a painter perspective are things to fix as soon as possible.

    I love you all  :D

MartinB78 reacted to dmstraker in Multi-layer high-pass sharpening (with macro)
A way of sharpening is to add multiple high-pass layers, progressively reducing the radius and increasing the opacity.
Attached is a macro to do this, including the ability to tweak adjustments. Please try it out and let us know here if you find any better adjustments.
Apply it to a duplicate layer so you can switch the adjusted layer on and off to see the difference.
This seems to be quite labour-intensive, including as it readjusts when you zoom in. It can hence be a good idea to merge the effect into one layer (turn off the original layer and layer/merge visible to do this).
You can also try adjusting the opacity of the adjusted layer and even play with blend mode (eg. try Luminosity).
