Butler To Cats reacted to Alfred in Designer 1.6 Beta – when?
I was assuming (perhaps incorrectly!) that math.random() generates a value greater than or equal to 0 but strictly less than 1, in which case math.random() + 1 would always be greater.

Butler To Cats reacted to v_kyr in Affinity Designer Shortcut Mapper
Let's share my personal used keyboard shortcuts visualiser for Affinity Designer. As you might have guessed from it's name, this tool shows up the ADe shortcuts in a more direct virtual keyboard style manner, locally in your web browser.
For adjustments just select or switch to the corresponding option setting on top of the page view for your ADe version (actually included are reworked English and German shortcuts for ADe v1.10.5 now). Select your OS (Win or Mac) and the localized keyboard layout you use:
You can also search for shortcuts via the bottom search field:
DesignerCapture.mp4 To run it locally, extract the compressed archive and navigate into the "/DesignerShortcutMapper" folder. There open the HTML page index.html in your default or prefered web browser. See also the following note:
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please read the in this distribution supplied readme.txt file, in order to understand how to setup/configure/enable for a webbrowser then local file:// access rights for running the DesignerShortcutMapper locally without a static HTTP server! - Though the recommended way is to run it via a http-server!
Here attached is the compressed DesignerShortcutMapper_v1.10.5.zip archive reworked for ADe v.1.10.5:
DesignerShortcutMapper_v1.10.5.zip Have fun with it!

Butler To Cats reacted to v_kyr in A Visual Shortcuts Explorer for all Affinity Tools
Here is a version of a Visual Shortcuts Explorer for all Affinity Tools, which can show up the Affinity Designer + Affinity Photo + Affinity Publisher v.1.10.5 keyboard shortcuts for Win/Mac (in English or German language), on different choosable localized keyboard layouts.
AffinityKeybMapper_Capture.mp4
This is the corresponding AffinityShortcutMapper_v1.10.5.zip archive:
AffinityShortcutMapper_v1.10.5.zip To use it, extract the compressed archive and navigate into the "/AffinityShortcutMapper" folder, there open the HTML page index.html locally in your default or prefered web browser and start exploring the various shortcuts!
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please read the in this distribution supplied readme.txt file, in order to understand how to setup/configure/enable for a webbrowser then local file:// access rights for running the AffinityShortcutMapper locally without a static HTTP server! - For the Chrome web browser you might try instead to locally launch Chrome the below shown way (due to it's default security settings) in order to allow file:// protocol access for it ...
> "C:\PathTo\Chrome.exe" --allow-file-access-from-files For Firefox setup see the distributions supplied readme.txt file! - Though the overall recommended way is to run the AffinityShortcutMapper via a http-server!
See also this related posting for a ADe standalone version!

Butler To Cats reacted to R C-R in Max number of artboards?
Just as a point of reference, during testing I have imported 450 to over 600 page pdf versions of various owner manuals into AD. Each page has been imported as a separate artboard. Many of the pages have several dozen to well over 100 vector objects plus various blocks of text, so maybe 2 to up to 15 thousand layers total.
Even though my Mac has just 8 GB total memory, once imported AD handles this without complaints or unusual slow downs.

Butler To Cats reacted to Lee D in Max number of artboards?
Hi calerius,
Welcome to the forums.
There doesn't seem to be a limit in place, my finger got tired after 350 :) Obviously the more artboards, the more space and resources will be required.

Butler To Cats reacted to - S - in Questions about Digital Painting
Different brushes have different default settings depending on what they were created to draw like or mimic. Some are a constant size, some change size or opacity/flow depending on pen pressure, etc. So, you're probably better off going through all the different default brushes and seeing if you can find a brush that already draws like you want it to.
However, if there's a particular brush where you really want to override these default settings, then you can do so by doing the following. Although the hardness setting only works with the standard round brushes.
1) Select the brush you want to modify in the Brushes panel
2) Click on the brush settings icon in the top right corner
3) Click on the 'Dynamics' tab
4) Change the desired setting to 'Pressure' and adjust the slider

Butler To Cats reacted to StuartRc in Texture Brush Packs x12 [Organics]
Organic texture Brushes Pack 1 Version 2.0
I have been working on updating the original texture brush packs so that it complies with more recent uploads
The original 11 brush packs(.zip) files have been removed and replaced with a single file containing all the original brush packs so that they are stil accessible
Added a new set now containing 12 brush packs (120 brushes) also in a single file for download.
Made significant changes to the original brushes
a. simplified the nozzles by removing the intense pattern overlays and added 28 new additional png files to increase pattern variation.
b. Reduced the initial size of the some of the original brushes.
c. Adjusted the brush dynamics to allow for use of flow and accumulation in the general brush tab
d. Where possible reduced the reliance on random size variation in brush dynamics
d. Added sample 4 page PDF for download
e. Removed original sample images (11) and replaced with just 4
enjoy!

I believe the beta has been superseded by the 1.5.5 final release - a final release is another reason for the beta to become obsolete.

Butler To Cats got a reaction from Ammar in Changing Icon Symbols
If you put your icon inside a group, then make the group a symbol, you should be able to add and delete content in the group and it will stay duplicated as a symbol in multiple places.
If the object (icon or whatever) itself is a symbol, I'm not sure - ah, as I experiment, yes, possibly. It seems symbols are a themselves a group-like wrapper around the item.
Expand one of the Symbol layers - it acts as a group. Try adding your new icon into the Symbol "group", then delete the old one.
Hopefully all the symbols update to match.
Try it on a separate or duplicate file before trying it on a production file.

Butler To Cats got a reaction from Callum in Is the future of Affinity and Serif a sound one?
Worth remembering that the Plus line went on for a couple of decades up to about version 18 (X8), give or take (X9 for PagePlus, and and the occasional version number jump/skip to keep the whole suite in line), and the change to Affinity was a planned one, not because the company failed or sold out to a competitor who squashed the product or pillaged some of its features.
Serif intentionally decided to restart from the ground up rather than continuing to add features to an old development base, so they could have a better base software design/workflow and improved implementation more in line with modern hardware and operating systems, and (as SrPx said) attractive to professional users as well as amateurs. (While remaining inexpensive and even more usable so as to still be attractive to amateurs like myself.)
As far as I can see, this has re-invigorated the user base, and the future looks bright!
My personal opinions, worth what you paid for them, no refunds, no connection with Serif (except as a customer), etc, etc.

Butler To Cats reacted to Frankentoon Studio in Character Design with - AP
Hello guys!
Just wanted to share a recent mascot design I made for my other design studio Insecto Design, using Affinity Photo. I've also included the preliminary pose sketches (made in AP too) so you can have an idea of the process. Hope you enjoy!

Butler To Cats got a reaction from christovw66 in Tool to smooth a rough vector edge
For a different angle, you can draw a white "donut" shape between the two black circles to visually "trim" the inner circle (over-pasting).
Alternatively, you can use an ellipse as a vector mask for the bitmap layer, trimming the inner picture by hiding everything outside the inner image area (cutting), including the roughness.
I have vector scissors, so everything looks like vector paper.

Butler To Cats got a reaction from gdenby in Graphics tablet workflow
(Ninja'd by pixelrain!)
A graphics tablet is like a mouse, it controls the cursor movement on the screen. Unlike a mouse, it also sends varying pressure information when you press and drag (like click-and-drag with a mouse). Some artists describe using the tablet's special pen (most tablet pens have a plastic nib which makes no marks, it doesn't physically "draw") as drawing (on the screen) with a pencil (or brush) again instead of drawing with a half-brick (the mouse). You look at the screen while "drawing" on the tablet.
Like a mouse, there is no way of drawing separately on most graphics tablets. This is what you get with with an Intuos tablet.
There are some hybrid exceptions. Wacom (and a few others) makes a few pen/tablet combinations (the Spark, Folio, and Slate) where the pen also contains a custom ballpoint pen tip that writes on paper and the standalone tablet does record the pen movement. These are designed more for note taking than for graphics, and usually have poorer pressure sensitivity.
There are also tablet computers where some models (such as the Surface range) have the digitizer (the graphics tablet technology) built into the monitor screen (and the rest of the laptop-like computer is also packed behind the screen), so you draw directly (with a special pen) onto the screen in the software workspace rather than the mouse-like graphics tablets where you draw on your desk while looking at the screen. You still get that pencil-like control and pressure sensitivity rather than just a touch screen without pressure sensitivity. Similarly, there are a range of hybrid tablet-monitors which allow you to draw directly onto the screen, but need to be plugged into a separate computer.
Lastly there are iPad and Android tablets which are like over-sized phone technology, but some (such as the iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil and the Samsung Note range) have digitizer technology so they work like a tablet computer, and increasing power and sophistication is making newer models more equivalent to a tablet computer.

Butler To Cats got a reaction from brunzenstein in filling a text with image
If you don't want image tiling, and you are using Artistic text, you can also drag an image layer onto/into a text layer (without converting to curves).
The blue "hint rectangle" should partially cover the width of the layer list/tree (but not the thumbnail image). If the blue rectangle covers the entire width (including the thumbnail image), you have gone too far and are dragging the image layer below the text. If it is a very small rectangle, you are dragging it onto the text layer thumbnail image where it becomes a rectangular image-sized mask for the text layer, the opposite of what you want (solution: drag more to the right).
