DarkerBlack reacted to Smee Again in Colorizing Old Photos
Still learning by experimenting, but think I'm getting better --- thanks to Ability Photo. I had been using Corel Paint Shop Pro 2018, but it has been cast aside because I can come closer to the results I want. I definitely prefer the workflow with Ability.
I found a site where someone saved a bunch of glass negatives from a photography studio that went back as far as the 1890's (possibly earlier).
Here is the original image and the incomplete colorized image. I wasn't able to complete it today ... separating the sky and the foliage is going to take some extra time. I liked the result I got with the lace on her left side - both around her neck and especially at the cuff of her left arm. It was surprisingly fast and simple.

Any particular reason you think you won't get the same boring answer to this question that we have gotten every other time it has been asked?
Basically, that answer has always been that while they would like to release their own DAM eventually, & there has already been some work toward that end, for now refining & improving the current projects (including the as yet still in beta Affinity Publisher) are what they are focused on.

DarkerBlack reacted to toltec in Using haze removal selectively
The easiest way would be to use a mask.
Duplicate the image layer and apply the Haze Filter to that.. Add a 'New Empty Mask Layer' to the duplicated layer and make sure it is nested inside.

It will appear to remove all trace of the Haze filter, which is what you want. You can then paint on the Mask layer with white paint to 'apply' the Haze filter to the image below.

Painting on the mask with white paint to reveal a (very strong) haze filter.

    Hi DarkerBlack,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums
Go to the Channels panel, right-click the Background Alpha channel and select Fill.
If you want to save that alpha channel before filling it, right-click the Background Alpha channel and select Create Spare Channel.

    Hi DTC867,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums
There's quite a few threads about finding a Lightroom replacement / DAM (Digital Asset Management) to work with Affinity Photo. If you perform a search with these and similar terms - "Lightroom replacement", " DAM" -  here in the forum you should find them pretty quickly. As you may guess the answers varies a lot and depends on what features you consider important/how you like to manage them (though a catalogue/database, folders etc). We hope to offer our own DAM software later as well but it may still take some time.

DarkerBlack reacted to toltec in Blending image into solid background with fade and transparent gradient
Put a rectangle shape over the image, set the fill to black.

Apply a gradient fill with A set to Black and C set to Black (white or grey) but with the opacity of C at 0%. B is the midpoint control and controls how the gradient changes from black to clear. The "feathering transition".

Drag A B or C to adjust. You can also apply more control points by clicking on the gradient line, which will give you more control handles (circles) and more midpoint controls. A multi gradiated (?) gradient.

P.S it looks rather faded in the middle because I dragged it so far to the right.

DarkerBlack reacted to Appogee in Patch Notes... somewhere?
Affinity Photo just prompted me to update to version 1.6.1.   Which I did.

But where can I find the patch notes for the new version?

Not here in the support forum.
No link in the 'About' screen of the application.
No apparent link on the Affinity website.
Nothing in the application's Help file.
Nothing in the application's Welcome screen.

    Congrats, I'm stumped.

DarkerBlack reacted to toltec in Channels versus Masks
Hi Five, glad to see you are alive! and on this forum.

Selections and masks are quite similar in that they isolate an area, however ...

A selection, selects the area you want. You may want to adjust the colours in just one place..

A mask, masks out the area you don't want (hides it), Like the above (but the opposite way round) it allows you to just modify an isolated area.

Both approaches allow you to cut out and copy say, one person from one picture and paste into another picture. A selection pastes just the area you selected. With a mask however, you paste not just the cut out person, but also the whole surrounding image untouched (but hidden). Handy In case you ever need it later, but the drawback is larger file sizes.

If you just want to adjust the colour of something, a selection is usually quicker and easier.

The advantage of saving selections to channels is that you can retrieve them and sometimes it's useful to build up a complex selection in stages. As an example, select the body and feather the selection edges to blend it in to its new surroundings, select the head and hair and refine the edges around the hair separately. You could not feather around the hair because it would vanish. Join the two selections into one selection by loading them from the channels..

Duplicating the original image layer is just something a lot of users do before starting any work on an image.
It serves as a backup if something goes wrong which is not immediately noticed and thus not easily fixed later on in the editing, especially so if you overwrite the original image.
It can also serve as a quick reference of the original image so you can easily see a before and after comparison of the work you have done on the image
Like I said, it is optional but good workflow in my opinion.
