Can some one tell me what the difference is between a fill layer and a pixel layer, if there is a difference? The one difference that I know of is that when a fill layer is used you can continue to edit a gradient but on a pixel layer you can't. cheers, Jason

Any one know how I can create something like this in affinity photo, or create a look like it...?

Selection output not working
Optikz replied to Optikz's topic in Tutorials (Serif and Customer Created Tutorials)
I restarted the program and it worked but it seems to happen after the program has been open for a while. I have made sure that the I was on the right layer (only one layer to choose from on the picture I was working on this last time it happened). I'll post some screen shots if it happens again...- 2 replies

Hi, I am using a MAS version of affinity photo 1.4.3 and every time I try to make a selection and have the output as New Layer then click apply, nothing happens. A new layer comes up but it's blank... Anyone else have this issue or know why it is happening? This just started in the last week. Jason

Nice photo.. this is my go at editing your shot.. It was first tweaked in Lightroom then 90% in affinity photo. There is the before/after pic and a screen shot of some edits used in affinity.

Really love these tutorials and how you keep updating them every few weeks. I was just trying to figure out how to do light beams the other day. I kinda of got it but the tutorials that were just put up today helped so much more! I don't have a good working knowledge of vector layers yet and this helped. On another note, I think a tutorial that explains what the blending options are best used for would be great. I end up just scrolling through them all to see what looks best because I don't know what they actually do or for what purpose they should actually be used for. cheers, Jason

making complicated selections
Optikz replied to Optikz's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (Mac and Windows)
Thanks for help! I will play with both and see which one I think works better. If nothing I have learned something new. :). For the second long exposure shot, ya, it's not likely going to turn out the way I hope, it was just a little too windy...- 4 replies

Hi, So I have these two photos and I want to replace the tree in the long exposure shot with the tree that doesn't have the motion blur in it from the wind. I can't seem to figure out how to make a really good selection of the tree in either picture. It would take forever to do it with the quick selection brush and refine it. I'm sure there is a way to make this an easier process. Does any one have suggestions? Cheers, Jason

Dodge and burn layer
Optikz replied to Optikz's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (Mac and Windows)
Thanks for the help guys! :) -
Can anyone tell me how to do a proper dodge and burn layer? All I seem to be able to do is to duplicate a background layer and then burn or dodge on it. Is this the only way? I can't seem to figure out how to do a proper 50% grey layer and use that for dodging and burning. Maybe that way isn't the way it's suppose to be done...I'm not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. cheers, Jason

Retina 5K iMac Performance

Retina 5K iMac Performance
Optikz replied to Tristan Biesecker's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (Mac and Windows)
I am currently finding issues with my iMac 5k performance as well. It's a i5 with only 8g or RAM currently. I am upgrading the RAM to 24g this week. Will that help? I am finding everything to be slow, switching between tools, visualizing Live Filters and brush strokes lag significantly lately.... Are there tweaks that can be made in the settings of the program? I am not super technical when it comes to that part of things. So I don't fully understand the responses that have already been posted. I am running the most current version (paid for via the app store). Should I be running a beta ver- 10 replies

Gradients and Masks
Optikz replied to Optikz's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (Mac and Windows)
Great! Thank you, I will give these a try. -
Hi, I really like affinity photo, I find it easier to us then photoshop but there are a few things I can'tseem to figure out. I am learning different techniques for editing black and white photos. It seems via youtube that in photoshop multiple gradients can be added to one mask. If I try to us the gradient tool on a mask on a selection that I have made in affinity I can only us 1 gradient. So if I wanted to have a gradient masking out an adjustment at the bottom and at the top I can't seem to do this, it just resets to the gradient that I just put down and I lose the previous one. If this ma

Luminosity masks in Affinity Photo

ok, looks good but how did you select different graduations of highlights and shadows to make the spare channels? -
View and edit spare channels
Optikz replied to arta's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (Mac and Windows)
I have learned how to make luminosity masks from another forum post and now would like to have "save" spare channel to file as an option so I could create actions like photoshop has. This way I would have to go through making multiple luminosity masks for every image. I think this would be a possibility if you could save these spare channels to file.
