A bit of Linux news: the Wine 9 release seems to be right around the corner. This means some patches to improve Affinity compatibility might be coming to a stable release soon.
-
That's good to know. But sadly Vanigilia's latest version only goes to 8.6. As for system wine, I seem to be stuck on 6.0.3~repack-1 in Ubuntu LTS...

I would probably not recommend using wine-ge for Affinity then. It's more gaming oriented anyway.
I understand. I'd prefer to try vanilla Wine from within Bottles but it's not offered as an option there. The other runners are Soda, Caffe, GE Wine (non-Proton), Lutris, Vaniglia, GE Proton, and then a category called 'Other' containing kron4ek-wine.

wine 8.14 is 12 minor versions newer than wine 8.2. So you will have my changes.
wine-ge is a custom build maintained by a guy who's handle is GloriousEggroll. Pretty sure that's what GE stands for. https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/wine-ge-custom
So you're at the mercy of what he builds if you're using wine-ge.
Look in the console a the same time you get that error, and see if you have logs about FIXME's or ERRORS.
Thanks for that info. I started Bottles from the terminal and triggered the dialog again. I don't see any FIXMEs or ERRORs:

I realize this is not the ideal way to debug, so I might have to find a way to install native Wine at some point.

Good to know, thanks.
The peculiar thing is that I'm still getting the "Failed to save document: <Untitled>" screen on Wine GE Proton 8.14. Do I need vanilla Wine to get the fix? I'm not sure how all these runners work, but Bottles doesn't seem to offer recent versions of vanilla Wine.
-
Did you try saving your file? I know a patch was submitted for it, but a few weeks ago I still couldn't on some version of Wine GE Proton 8 (I think 8.7 or 8.14).
Maybe I just need to run the latest development build for it, not sure. Since I'm on Ubuntu I currently use Bottles to install Wine versions, and the most recent version I can use is Wine GE Proton 8.14. It doesn't look like they support vanilla Wine.

I just realized I completely missed ElementalWarrior's post, which already explains why saving won't work:
On 11/18/2022 at 2:26 AM, ElementalWarrior said:I will say that version 2 isn't going to work at all at this moment. there is a library used named dxcore that doesn't seem to have an implementation in wine yet.
And version 1 won't fully work because some of the move/create from my patch aren't merged yet. And I have some feedback to attend to from comments on the merge request before it can be merged. As such saving won't work.

Is anyone else unable to save files? When I run Affinity Designer (haven't tested this in Photo) and try to save a file, I always get this regardless of where I save it:
QuoteFailed to save document: <Untitled>
Save failed because access to the file was lost.
Do you wish to save the document to a new file?An obvious culprit could be that the Flatpak sandboxing wouldn't allow me to write, but I've tried creating a custom drive mapping from the Bottles interface for this purpose. Interesting detail: the file handle successfully gets created, the file just happens to contain 0 bytes. It does this consistently. I've never been able to save a file.
-
Having followed the instructions (get Bottles from Flatpak, pick Caffe 7.10, choose custom recipe, run the installer within the bottle, change the launch options), I get the error "The software requires a DirectX10 compatible graphics card in order to run." Any setting I should check? I'm running Affinity Photo 1.10.5.1342 with dxvk-2.0-1-12901b5 (toggle enabled) on a GeForce GTX 1660 Ti graphics card.
Happy New Year everyone
Edit: it's working under dxvk-1.10.3 here!

It's a folder on my local disk.

Sometimes I also experience an issue where if I go to the Export persona, I don't see any slices. If I then attempt to create one, Photo just crashes. Both of these issues always happen the same way, but I can't reproduce them every time.
-
Sometimes the following happens:
- I click 'Export slices' in the Export persona.
- A dialog titled 'Select the folder into which the exported files should be saved'
- A spinning beach ball appears and everything freezes. At this point I have to force quit and hope I can restore my work.
Also note how in my screenshot something in the directory listing seems to be off. Is this a bug? I'm Affinity Photo 1.6.11 on a MacBook Air with macOS version 10.14.2.

I have multiple brush overlays in my develop persona, so it's easy to lose track of which overlay covers which area. Is there a way to "reveal" the currently selected overlay, much like the quick mask feature or - as in Photoshop's Camera Raw - that hover effect when you mouse over one of the overlay circles?
Removing all of the effects from an overlay appears to do what I want, but I don't want to lose those settings.
-
Ooh, I didn't notice the second handle before. That works, thanks!
-
Update: I ended up remaking the frame text as artistic text. Not the best solution, but it worked.
-
I'm trying to resize a group that contains frame text, but I noticed that the frame text's font size doesn't rescale in proportion. Regular text is scaling properly. Oddly enough, this problem does not occur when modifying skew. How do I get the frame text to scale together with the group?
Affinity Photo running on Linux with Bottles

Since Fedora just released Wine 9 into its repositories, I figured I'd give Bottles and AffinityCustomBottleRecipe.yml another spin.
First, I had to switch to the NVIDIA driver. Then this happened when starting the Affinity Designer v1 installer:
0120:err:module:fixup_imports_ilonly mscoree.dll not found, IL-only binary L"SetupUI.exe" cannot be loaded
I read elsewhere on the internet that you should install Mono in that case, so I did. Having done that, I retried:
I figured I'd install .NET Framework 3.5, since in older attempts I got a popup from the Affinity installer mentioning it was not present on my computer. The .NET Framework installer failed too:
The furthest I got was using Grunt's advice:
I created a 32-bit bottle and then I got this:
Before closing the installer, I went into C:\users\yourusername\Temp\AffinitySetup and copied the files including the MSI file somewhere safe using a drive mount. Moving back into the 64-bit bottle, I mounted the files, ran msiexec /i Affinity.msi, and the files were installed. Launching Designer.exe however was a dead end:
While I've been able to start Affinity Designer v1 in the past, unfortunately now I no longer get to the splash screen. If anyone knows any Wine troubleshooting guides that may help, let me know.
