I was experiencing freezing also and it was do to the latest nVidia drivers. Try changing drivers for your GPU or turn off hardware acceleration to see if it is GPU related.

The intention is to use the existing presets in 1.10 in a landscape orientation. We changed it so you could make portrait presets as before we could not have duplicate ratios.
If you used the 2:1 preset and it is now giving you a landscape crop which you do not want, simply Rotate the current preset and add this new preset from the Cog icon in Common Ratios and call is 1:2. You can then manage it and move it to the top so you no longer have to scroll.

@JeffreyWalther your 2070 Super is more than capable so it sounds like a driver issue to me.
Sometimes updating drivers, rolling back etc. might not cut it - we recommend using DDU to remove all traces of the driver and download and install a fresh version—especially if you've already tried updating.
If you look through Mark Ingram's post on this forum (lead Windows dev) you will see this is what he often recommends.

I was having the same EXACT problem and I believe it was the latest nVidia drivers, because I reverted back a few driver revisions and the problem went away. I don't know what your hardware is but play around with the drivers, and the newest isn't always best as I found out.

We are pleased to announce an update for the Windows release of Affinity Photo, version 1.10.0

Help and localisation improvement.
UPDATING TO THIS VERSION (Free for existing customers)
The software version can be seen on the splash screen and the About dialog (in Help > About Affinity Photo).
If you’ve purchased from the Affinity Store— each time you start the Affinity Store software it will check for updates and offer any available update. The latest update will install over the top of any earlier version, with no need to uninstall. You can download the latest installer by logging into the affinity store here and find the order in your account and use the "Download" button in there. Alternatively, this new release (and previous versions of Affinity Photo for Windows) can be downloaded from this link. (that installer is NOT for Windows Store purchases and needs a product key).
If you’ve purchased from the Microsoft Store— Microsoft Store updates are done automatically by the operating system (each time you start the application). If this does not happen for you, open the Windows Store app and click the three dots in the top right corner of the app and then go to Downloads and Updates. Click Get Updates. This should hopefully force the update to show.

I'm the lead engineer for Windows, so I'm pretty well placed to comment on what common crashes we see.
Looking at the thread you provided, I identified the original crash was within the NVIDIA driver. We know of a problem with Capture One's Explorer integration, which caused a crash within the NVIDIA driver in other applications, and I notice that the original poster mentioned that they have Capture One installed, so that crash will have been caused by them. I reported this issue to NVIDIA, and they are now aware of it (and can reproduce it).
So yes, to re-iterate, the original crash was indeed caused by a crash in a graphics driver, caused by a piece of third party software being installed.

There's no need to argue or discuss the point of AMD support. We are in contact with AMD, who are being very responsive, and they are working on a fix. The issue is that their latest drivers have been re-written for the new architectures, and there's a problem with the OpenCL kernel compiler, as it's now 10X slower than it was before (this would translate to a hang when switching to a new tool for the first time for each app launch). I've provided them with test cases, and I'm in regular contact with their engineers about the problem.

There are indeed a few DNG issues logged and unresolved - I did check this yesterday but nothing seemed similar. Also, because others were not able to reproduce, it would normally be assumed drivers are at fault.

There is an issue with Photo w/DXO PureRAW DNG files (A known issue). It may be tied to the issue that the OP was having. That is the reason I thought I would bring it up. There may be a problem with DNG files in general in Affinity Photo.

I have lost count of the number of times over the years where I have experienced hardware issues that affected only a single program. Doyn't errors are related to very precise circumstances, and only one program does everything exactly right to trigger the issue.
But it may not be hardware. It could be drivers. Or Windows itself. Affinity does things differently from other applications, and may do legitimate things that trigger errors in drivers, Windows, or the hardware.
Affinity itself, running as a user-mode application, cannot crash Windows.

As a new user of Affinity Photo I was delighted to get the update so quickly. Moving from 1.9 to 1.9.1 was easy and everything appears to have been carried across. With 1.9 and focus stacking I was getting a 'blue screen of death' if hardware acceleration was selected (AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 4650G with integrated Radeon Graphics). That problem has gone, I am please to report.
My expectations have been exceeded. That doesn't happen very often with software!

Why go back to 1.8.5? When all you have to do is disable OpenCL (for now). There are too many great features in 1.9 to give up on!
