Sven Kalkschmidt reacted to Patrick Connor in Affinity V2 Windows installers ARE available as Unsandboxed MSI/EXE as well as Sandboxed MSIX
With the roll out of Affinity Designer/Photo/Publisher for Windows version 2.0.4, Serif are making available Unsandboxed installers (also known here as MSI/EXE installers). These installers will be made for all future V2 release builds going forward and will autoupdate from within the application (checking for updates on each run, like the sandboxed version does)
Serif do not recommend or support mixtures of MSIX and MSI on the same computer. You should only use either all sandboxed or all unsandboxed,  particularly if you have more than one Affinity V2 application installed.
You can now download (and install) Windows unsandboxed MSI/EXE installer files (as well as Windows sandboxed MSIX installer files) from these store pages.
    1. From the  V2 Universal Download page

Click on the words "Looking for Windows MSI installers?"

We are pleased to announce that the first Affinity Designer 2 Customer Beta 2.0.3.1670 is now available as a download from the link above.
Please note: We are working on an equivalent MSI/EXE installer to ALSO be available before the time this 2.0.3.x beta cycle finishes, and becomes a public release.
This beta is an update to the 2.0.0 version recently released to all customers and will form the basis of our first patch for 2.0.0. We recommend that you use this beta in preference to the release version if you are affected by any of the issues listed below.

If this is your first time using a customer beta of an Affinity app, it’s worth noting that the beta will install as a separate app - alongside your store version. They will not interfere with each other at all and you can continue to use the store version for critical work without worry.

Sven Kalkschmidt reacted to Ash in Affinity V2, updates, pricing and no subscription [repost]
    Hi All,
Well, it’s been a pretty crazy week since the launch of V2!
This has been a real labour of love for us over the last year or so, and I can’t even begin to describe how hard the development team have worked on it. Not only getting the V2 apps launched, but also of course finally bringing Publisher to iPad.
With this being our first paid-for upgrade there has understandably been a lot of feedback / questions around future updates and our pricing policies. I thought it was worth addressing / clarifying our position on some of these personally...
    Updates to V2 moving forward
Buying V2 not only gets you all the new features you have seen, but we have various updates planned – including many more new features and improvements – which you will get for free. This will continue until such a time that V3 is released. We’re not sure exactly when V3 will be, but I can confirm we are not going to move to anything as regular as an annual upgrade cycle as has been speculated.
It’s worth saying too that V2 does include many under-the-hood changes to our underlying technology, and we have also been investing in several new areas of research recently. Some of these haven’t manifested themselves into new features yet, but overall V2 does give us a better platform to develop on moving forward and I’m sure you will be pleased with the updates V2 will receive.
    Updates to V1 moving forward
While we did say on the FAQ that V1 would no longer receive any updates, I want to clarify that was about new feature updates. We will be updating V1 to fix any critical problems caused by operating system updates in the future. So if the next version of macOS breaks V1 we will endeavour to fix it. There will be a point in time when continuing to maintain V1 in this way will not be tenable, but certainly for the foreseeable future we will continue to patch. In fact, we have an update to V1 queued up for release very shortly with some fixes for Ventura and issues caused by a recent Windows security / quality update.
We will update our FAQ shortly to make that clearer for everyone.
    Offer period
In case you didn’t see, I’m pleased to confirm we have decided to run this initial launch offer until 14th December to give everyone the best chance possible to get it if they wish / have a decent amount of time to trial it.
    Upgrade pricing
It’s been really hard to see some of the comments about us not looking after our existing customers – we’re pretty devasted that anyone feels like that to be honest. But the fact is we felt our hands were tied somewhat with being able to offer upgrade pricing in a fair way. The main reason for this was App Store customers (which make up around 35% of our userbase). The problems with that are two-fold: firstly, we didn’t have a way from within V1 to validate an App Store purchase receipt to reliably ensure customers who were entitled to an upgrade could get one; and secondly, we could not find a good way for people to get that discount via the App Store. Us pushing upgrade customers to go exclusively via our own site (including customers who were previously acquired via the app stores) may also have put us in violation of App Store Ts & Cs which we were obviously concerned about.
I’m not saying that these issues were completely insurmountable, but any solutions we came up with would be messy, and most importantly could have resulted in some bona fide V1 customers struggling to get validated and claim their discount. We certainly don’t have the support resource here if we ended up needing to manually validate tens of thousands of receipts for example.
The only option we felt was safe to move forward with was a general launch offer, which would guarantee that every V1 customer could get the discount, whether they purchased directly through us or the App Stores. We knew a side effect of that would mean some new customers would end up receiving that same discount – but we felt that was a better option than V1 customers missing out. It’s also worth saying that while there has been some good press about V2, all our main marketing has been via email and through social media to our followers. In other words, we felt ok about it because we knew the vast majority of people who would find out about it or take advantage of the offer would be existing customers. I would be surprised if over the offer period customers upgrading from V1 didn’t make up more than 90% of our sales.
Overall I do believe us giving a 40% discount, along with the addition of the new Universal Licence of course, is offering fantastic value for money for those who want to upgrade.
However, taking on board some of the feedback there is something extra we can do – we will offer a new free bundle of content exclusively for V1 customers upgrading to V2 as an extra thank you for your support. I’ve seen this suggested by a number of customers and it’s a great idea as it does remove the App Store conflict entirely.
We’ll need a little time to put something together, but all customers who previously registered or purchased V1 and have since upgraded to V2 will receive a voucher code for this via email as soon as we can.
    A comment on no subscription
I do want to say that some of the points above are exactly the reason why software companies move to subscription. Whatever you do with upgrade pricing, you still have the issue of customers who bought the previous version 3 months ago vs. those who have had it 2+ years. Offering perpetual licences also gives the additional overhead of needing to maintain the previous version longer than you would if everyone was on subscription / generally always on the latest version.
We are a small team so some of these complications are not ideal — all we really want to do is focus on developing our latest codebase, push out regular updates and continue with our mission to make great creative software accessible to everyone.
But it does need to be funded somehow. We know you love our no-subscription model, but there also needs to be a level of appreciation that the alternative is having paid-for upgrades from time to time. That unfortunately comes with its own problems.
All of that said, I have to say we have been blown away with the response to V2 - around 3 times as many people have upgraded in the last week than we expected - and we really can't thank you enough for the support you have shown. More than anything the success of this upgrade puts us in a great place to continue investing heavily in development which is ultimately what it's all about, and we’re super excited to crack on with some great updates coming next year!
    All the best,
    Ash

Hi all. Thanks for your patience over the weekend when our offices were closed.
We've had a meeting this morning and decided to ALSO offer MSI installers to those people who would like them. I can't tell you when this will happen, as there is engineering work that will be required to allow this to happen, but we hope it won't be long.
    Thanks for your feedback!

Running into the same problem. Strokes inside of groups don't inherit the "Scale with object" setting. I wonder if this is a newly introduced bug, rather than a UI change. I was on AD (windows) 1.6x before ugrading to the latest version, it worked just fine.

@Leigh: a way to delete nodes in the way you described would be much appreciated. Most users work with one hand one the keybaord (usually at the left side) and one on the mouse. Not needing to move the left hand across the entire keyboard (and thus losing the hovering position on the left side) or having to take the right hand off the mouse helps to increase operating speed and is also less tiring. It's those little UI/UX things that are preventing pro users from working comfortably in AD.

Sven Kalkschmidt got a reaction from G13RL in Node tool Issue affecting all versions since v1.8.3
I totally agree this is annoying and should be fixed. How annoying you find this may depend on the particular use case and how often you encounter it. After years of reporting bugs in design programs to software companies, seeing some getting fixed and others not, I just don't care about reporting any more. I'd rather lose 200 x 0,5 seconds a day encountering a minor bug, than writing, documenting and following up bug reports for hours, when there is not even a guarantee to get it fixed. Hope this helps you see one possible explanation why this is not more widely mentioned.

I've been trying each new version too and the issue still exists as of 1.9.2 beta.
What I don't understand is how barely anyone seems to have noticed or been affected by this. This one bug immediately makes the program almost completely unusable for me. Do other people just not click to add and immediately try and move nodes? Or is it some sort of software conflict only affecting a few people?

@norbinw please read my last post again. it's about integer values for pixel sizes, not millimeters. 50mm at 300dpi is 590,6 px — that's why you get the white line again. you need to make the artboard 590px or 591px.

Sven Kalkschmidt reacted to Guillermo Espertino in "Align Artboards to Pixel Grid"
This is very annoying. You have to make sure that every single artboard you duplicated via alt+drag has integer coordinates, otherwise you'll get wrong dimensions or undesired edge antialiasing on export.
I think that when the document units are pixels, artboards should ALWAYS move in integer increments. It makes no sense to have artboards that are not aligned to the pixel grid.

Sven Kalkschmidt reacted to Dave Vector in 3 Time-saver tools: 1.) Selection Sets, 2.) Select By, 3.) Colour Modify
First off,  thank you for Affinity Designer's powerful toolset.  It's a joy to use!
When I am using Affinity Designer to create complicated presentations with multiple artboards and nested groupings, I wish for 3 key tools to make my job faster, easier, and more controlled.  Tools that obliterate tedious tasks can mean the difference between enjoyable and monotonous, between making money and losing money as a designer.  Let me know if you think these three suggestions should be added to Affinity Designer.  Apologies if these have already been suggested...
    1.       SELECTION SETS
    a.       Summary – Select a bunch of objects across artboards, even within groups, and save them out as a selection set.
    b.       Distinction – Not the same as grouping because the selection set can span multiple groups.  Also spans objects located on different artboards.
    c.       Procedure – Select the objects you wish to have in the selection set, save them as a selection set, give the set a unique name.  Choose your selection set from a list at any time.  The selection is made, ready to modify, hide/unhide, lock/unlock, etc.
    d.       Advantages, examples – Easy to select multiple objects within complicated group structures.  Many 3D apps have this, like 3DSMax.

    2.       SELECT BY…
    a.       Summary – The “Select By” command allows you to select objects by stroke, fill, or effect properties.
    b.       Procedure – Select the source object with the properties you wish to select, activate the “select by” command, choose the properties you wish to select by (stroke, fill, effect) Affinity Designer will select all the matching objects.
    c.       Advantages, examples – Allows you to select all objects with similar properties and easily change those properties.  E.g.: If you determined that your assets would look slightly better with a 6-pt. line thickness, rather than a 4-pt. line thickness, you can select them all and change them easily, without adjusting adjacent objects with a 5-pt. stroke.  Adobe Illustrator has this.

    3.       COLOUR MODIFY
    a.       Summary – If a group of selected objects have the exact same stroke and fill colour, this command will allow the user to change identical stroke and fill colours simultaneously, rather than have to change the stroke colours and fill colours separately.
    b.       Distinction – Not the same as using Global colour on a stroke and fill, where the global colour swatch can be changed, because this affects all items using that colour, not the selection exclusively.
    c.       Procedure – Select the objects with the colour you wish to change, activate the “Colour Modify” command, choose the source colour, choose the new target colour, all the selected objects’ fill and stroke colours are modified if they are the exact same colour.
    d.       Advantages, examples – This comes in handy of you have an asset comprised of a mixture of lines and shapes all the same colour and you wish to change that colour, which can be complicated when those objects are grouped, and/or have mixed colour stroke and fills.

Sven Kalkschmidt reacted to Patrick Connor in Affinity Designer for Windows - 1.7.0
This build has been superseded by the release of 1.7.1 announced here
We are pleased to announce a major update for the Windows release of Affinity Designer, version 1.7.0
The changes in Affinity Designer for Windows 1.7.0 over the last Affinity Designer patch 1.6.5 are as follows:
    CHANGES SINCE LAST VERSION
    Tools
We've overhauled most of the core tools, adding subtle new features to make you more productive. New Point Transform Tool allows you to scale and rotate objects from any node. The Node Tool now contains a 'Transform Node' option which provides a containing box for the selected nodes and allows for more freeform editing of the nodes. New 'Cube' grid setup mode (take a look in 'View' -> 'Grid and Axis Manager...'). Pen tool now has a 'rubber band' mode and also a mode to allow future curves to be added to the current object's curves (for example, the character 'a' is constructed of two curves in a single 'curve object' and this mode makes that construction simpler). Node tool can now auto-snap nodes if you drag a node from one curve over the top of a node from another (selected) curve and pause, it will offer to snap to the same geometry as the node you're hovering over (ie,  modify the on and off-curve nodes to match). This is really useful for trying to reconstruct areas of one curve from another curve. Node tool now allows for lasso selection of nodes by holding the Alt/Option key and dragging a selection lasso. Pencil tool now offers a 'sculpt' mode that allows for extending or manipulating curves in a more natural way. More to come in this area soon. Many tools now allow for 'Alignment widgets' which you can toggle the visibility of in the context toolbar. When enabled you can visually adjust the alignment or even, for example, 'align to centre, snapped to the left edge of this object' by simply click/dragging. Fill tool correctly allows editing of skewed fill handles and newly-created skewed fills draw much nicer now. Ruler origin can be edited by simply dragging the area where the rulers intersect each other - it can even be snapped onto objects in the document. Guides can be edited in most tools by simply dragging a guide in the ruler area. Grid setup is now more interactive: origin can be dragged, axis scale adjusted and angle adjusted on-document, complete with snapping to objects and angles in the document to help you reconstruct useful grids from finished artworks or sketches. By enabling 'Edit in Plane' on the new Isometric Panel, tools can edit objects and appear to make those edits along the currently active plane - extremely useful for artists who enjoy working with any axonometric projections. You can now drag the rotation centre point (when enabled on the context toolbar) while holding Ctrl and it will translate the object - this is actually very useful for positioning and snapping objects relative to others. Shapes tools now have presets so you can create your own favourite shape setups and more easily use them again. There are just far too many subtle tool changes to mention here, but hopefully you'll find the tools much improved  General
Arrowheads are now available in the Stroke Panel. New Appearance Panel allows for multiple strokes and fills on a single shape. HDR / EDR monitor support New brushes, styles and assets are now shipped with the product. Visible bleed (accessed from the View menu) so you can more easily design into the bleed area - a common feature request. “Alternate futures” for document history have been added. Traditionally, if you roll back the undo history then do something else all your changes after that point are lost. Designer will now display a small branch icon in the history tab when you do this. Pressing that button will cycle between all the different “futures” after that history entry - meaning you will never lose work you have done. New 'Isometric Panel' makes it easy to setup and work with various axonometric projections within the application. HEIF images can now be loaded directly into Designer. If they contain a depth map, this will also be loaded as a second layer. Because depth maps are typically lower resolution than the main image, optional “smart” upsampling will be performed. Designer now supports custom document presets - a popular feature request. A new blend mode - Linear Burn - has been added. Layers Panel now allows you to tag individual layers with a colour and display thumbnails with transparent backgrounds and at different sizes. New “Move inside / outside” commands have been added - useful for quickly clipping/unclipping. New "Merge curves/Separate curves" commands. Grids now have an editable number of angle subdivisions. The Hard Mix blend mode has been improved. Numerous text improvements have been made - including new features such as bullets and numbering. Significant PDF import / export improvements and fixes. Improved Freehand import slightly - failing to read all of a file shouldn't force it to produce a 'failed to load' response, instead we just load the bits that we *could* read New splash screen and Persona icons Brushes
Designer 1.7 introduces a new “sub-brush” mechanism, developed in conjunction with Paolo Limoncelli (DAUB® Brushes). This exciting feature allows any raster brush to have a list of other brushes attached which will draw at the same time. Each sub-brush has a fully separate and customisable set of dynamics. You can control when the sub-brushes are drawn and how they blend with the main brush. Symmetry (up to 32-way) is now supported - including on-canvas controls and optional mirroring. Wet edges and accumulation are now available on colour brushes and brushes with HSL variance. Brushes with multiple nozzle textures have always chosen the nozzle at random. In 1.7, the nozzle choice has a dynamic controller and ramp for greater control. All pixel brush tools now support left and right arrow keys for rotation - a common feature request.
    Adjustments
The HSL adjustment layer has been rewritten. It now supports custom hue ranges, a new algorithm, new UI and picker controls. The Levels adjustment layer now supports output levels - a common feature request. The White Balance adjustment layer has been rewritten. The Selective Colour adjustment layer has been rewritten. PSD import / export of adjustments has been improved. The Vibrance adjustment layer has been rewritten. The Recolour adjustment layer has gained a lightness slider. Misc
There is currently new free content available to claim in the Welcome Screen This thread is for commenting on this announcement. Hello,
We are pleased to announce the immediate availability of the final beta of Affinity Photo 1.7 for macOS.
If this is your first time using a customer beta of an Affinity app, it’s worth noting that the beta will install as a separate app - alongside your store version. They will not interfere with each other at all and you can continue to use the store version for critical work without worry.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all users in this forum who have helped us work on 1.7 - we couldn't do it without you
Barring any last minute catastrophe, this build will ship to customers sometime next week and we will soon be back in beta for 1.7.1 - with new features, improvements and fixes.
    Many thanks (as always),
    Affinity Photo Team

    Changes This Build

    - Fixed bug where autosave files would not get cleaned up after a save & close.
    - Improved HDR merge performance when Metal compute is enabled.
    - Fixed inpainting brush when working on "Current layer and below".

    Changes Since 1.6 Release

    EDR
    - Added support for EDR displays to Photo. When editing a 32bit document, enabling EDR will switch macOS into a mode whereby it will increase the backlight intensity and darken screen content - increasing the dynamic range available when rendering content.
    Performance
    - The core processing engine in Affinity Photo has been rewritten to take advantage of the powerful discrete AMD GPUs in modern Mac hardware. It will now automatically use any compatible discrete GPU, alongside the Intel GPU support present in 1.6. Typically this improves compositing / editing performance by at least 1000%. Performance when using integrated Intel GPUs has also been massively improved.
    - External GPUs (eGPU) are also supported - including hot-plug-and-unplug support.
    - Multiple GPUs are supported - if you have more than 1 GPU (ie. Intel + AMD in MacBook Pro, or Intel + eGPU in other Macs) Photo will use them all, at the same time, to improve performance. There is no limit to the number of GPUs which can be used.
    Brushes
    - Photo 1.7 introduces a new “sub-brush” mechanism, developed in conjunction with Paolo Limoncelli (DAUB® Brushes). This exciting feature allows any brush to have a list of other brushes attached which will draw at the same time. Each sub-brush has a fully separate and customisable set of dynamics. You can control when the sub-brushes are drawn and how they blend with the main brush.
    - The brush engine in Photo has been rewritten to use the new GPU architecture described above. With GPU support, even huge brushes with 1% spacing will perform well. All brushes / brush tools are accelerated.
    - Symmetry (up to 32-way) is now supported - including on-canvas controls and optional mirroring. We have more symmetry features on the way - so stay tuned during the beta process.
    - Wet edges and accumulation are now available on colour brushes and brushes with HSL variance.
    - Brushes with multiple nozzle textures have always chosen the nozzle at random. In 1.7, the nozzle choice has a dynamic controller and ramp for greater control.
    - All brush tools now support left and right arrow keys for rotation - a common feature request.
    - Allow Ctrl key to be held when typing numbers in a brush tool (will change flow instead of opacity).
    - Fixed ABR brush import (would ignore "random" controllers).
    RAW
    - The RAW processing engine in Photo has been rewritten - producing better results and improved performance. It also takes advantage of the GPU architecture changes described above.
    - RAW files now load much more quickly - especially if you have a compatible GPU.
    - Reimplemented support for XTrans sensors.
    - The denoise algorithm has been rewritten. It produces better results and takes advantage of the new GPU architecture.
    - Hot pixel removal is now automatically performed by the Serif Labs engine.
    - Profiled lens correction are more stable, apply more quickly, and can be toggled in the Develop UI.
    - The histogram in the Develop persona is now presented in the output colour space - as opposed to always being linear.
    - Develop now respects the output profile when previewing.
    - Added support for CR3 RAW when using the Core Image engine.
    - Show which autofocus rectangles were in focus and which were selected by the camera (yellow, green respectively).
    - A large number of new cameras are supported for RAW development (we will provide a list of the new supported cameras as soon as possible!).
    - Automatically fall back to Core Image for cameras which are not supported by Serif Labs.
    Filters
    - New “Procedural Texture” filter with advanced presets support.
    - New “Voronoi” filter.
    - Denoise, Clarity and Shadows / Highlights filters have been rewritten (using technology from the Develop Persona).
    - More filters are now available as Live Filters - including the new Procedural Texture filter.
    - Live filters have been rewritten to improve performance - especially when multiple filters are used in a document.
    - Improved Polar to Rectangular and Rectangular to Polar filters.
    - Added round dot type to the halftone filter.
    - New “Lens Correction” filter - apply lens correction from the built-in lens database.
    - Bilateral blur accuracy improvements.
    Adjustments
    - The HSL adjustment layer has been rewritten. It now supports custom hue ranges, a new algorithm, new UI and picker controls.
    - The Levels adjustment layer now supports output levels - a common feature request.
    - The White Balance adjustment layer has been rewritten.
    - The Selective Colour adjustment layer has been rewritten.
    - PSD import / export of adjustments has been improved.
    - The Vibrance adjustment layer has been rewritten.
    - The Recolour adjustment layer has gained a lightness slider.
    Layers
    - Layers page - added option for transparent background for thumbnails.
    - Layers page - added multiple thumbnail size options.
    - Layers page - added ability to tag layers with a colour - including PSD round-trip.
    - Allow adding an empty group from the Layer menu.
    - New “Duplicate Selection” item in Layer menu (old behaviour). Duplicate now duplicate the whole layer ignoring pixel selection.
    - Alt / Option is now used to make a pixel selection from layer luminance. You can now also hold shift to add the result to the current selection.
    - Hide / Show / Show All Layers options in layers menu.
    - Ability to either rasterise or rasterise and trim a layer. Previously recorded macros will trim.

    Selections
    - Significant improvements to selection refinement.
    - When using selection tools with no pixel selection, default to New / Add as appropriate.
    - Added “Alpha Similarity” to Select Sampled Colour tool.
    Tools
    - Grouped tool shortcuts now default to needing the shift key held to cycle (option in preferences).
    - The Crop tool has been rewritten - it now supports resolution changes, absolute pixel size and has a much improved preset mechanism.
    - The Sponge Brush tool now gives more correct / pleasant results.
    - Allow brush rotate / size key changes while dragging.
    - Added a “Reveal Canvas” checkbox to the crop tool - defaults to off.
    - Added new “Transform object separately” mode into Move tool.
    - A general tools overhaul has been performed - providing editing of grids, guides, page origin, across multiple tools (not just in the Move tool)
    - Patch tool now supports arrow keys for rotate / scale.
    - All brush tools can now be axis constrained once brush has started - not just the pixel tool.
    History
    - “Alternate futures” for document history have been added. Traditionally, if you roll back the undo history then do something else all your changes after that point are lost. Photo will now display a small branch icon in the history tab when you do this. Pressing that button will cycle between all the different “futures” after that history entry - meaning you will never lose work you have done.
    - The History page now has an “advanced” mode - which shows thumbnails and time info.
    I/O
    - HEIF images can now be loaded directly into Photo. If they contain a depth map, this will also be loaded as a second layer. Because depth maps are typically lower resolution than the main image, optional “smart” upsampling will be performed.
    - TIFF export now has user selectable compression method.
    - Added support for 12bit TIFF files.
    - Introduced new metadata mining - completely rewritten to improve performance, flexibility and correctness.
    - Metadata is now dynamically synchronised with your document - so if you resize then export, the values will be correct.
    - Added Focal Length to metadata summary view.
    - Added a button in general preferences to open a folder from which Photo will read LensFun-style XML files - if users wish to add / experiment with their own lens profiles.
    - Support 16bit CMYK TIFF import.
    General
    - New ability to control how macros are scaled / aligned when playing back.
    - Added an “Assets” panel to Photo.
    - New cube setup mode for grids.
    - Add “Fill with Primary / Secondary” to the Edit menu for fast access.
    - The batch process dialog now fully supports expressions for height and width - available constants are “w”, “h” and “dpi”.
    - “Lock guides” added to menus.
    - Support for drag dropping .afstyles into Photo.
    - Support for drag dropping .afpalette into Photo.
    - Photo now supports custom document presets - a popular feature request.
    - A new blend mode - Linear Burn - has been added.
    - New “Move inside / outside” commands have been added - useful for quick operations on clipping masks etc.
    - The Hard Mix blend mode has been improved.
    - New provider options have been added to the stock panel - support for Unsplash, Pexels and Pixabay. All of these providers offer full-resolution stock imagery which is free to use.
    - Numerous text improvements have been made - including new features.
    - Significant stability improvements when working on non-local files (network shares, USB drives, etc.).
    - Significant PDF import / export improvements and fixes.
    - New welcome screen layout and all new samples.
    - Numerous other bug fixes - too many to list!

    Status: Beta
    Purpose: Features, Improvements, Fixes
    Requirements: Purchased Affinity Designer
    Mac App Store: Not submitted
    Download: Here

    Hello,
We are pleased to announce the immediate availability of the beta of Affinity Designer 1.7 for macOS.
Designer 1.7 is a significant change to the currently shipping 1.6 version. Files edited in this version will not be backwards-compatible with the shipping 1.6 version. As such, we would not recommend using this 1.7 version for critical or production work at this stage. It is inevitable that there were will be a number of issues with 1.7 but we hope these will be minor and aim to resolve any issues very quickly, so please use it and explore the new features, but also do keep in mind that you may find snags and we would appreciate your help with finding and reporting these to us.
If this is your first time using a customer beta of an Affinity app, it’s worth noting that the beta will install as a separate app - alongside your store version. They will not interfere with each other at all and you can continue to use the store version for critical work without worry.
It’s also worth noting that we aren’t done yet - we are still working through reported bugs from previous releases and hope to fix as many as possible before the final release of 1.7. To be notified when there is a new beta please press follow on this announcment thread
With all that said, we hope that you will enjoy the new capabilities introduced in this initial release and we look forward to any and all feedback you give to us.
    Many thanks,
    Matt

Please refer to previous beta 1.7.0.4 post where there's a list of major changes since 1.6. This latest update builds on the 1.7.0.10 changes and also includes the following changes:
Fix for issues saving after applying a 'none' arrowhead! Miscellaneous PDF import improvements. Artboard positions are now show relative to the whole spread, rather than showing as 0,0 at all times. Pen Tool now has an extra option to allow for the selection to be retained while adding new curves/extending existing ones. This is useful for allowing you to make use of snapping to other object geometry while creating/editing curves. It is on by default. 'Rotation centre' is now 'Transform origin' to better reflect what it does. Added a user-definable transform origin to the Node Tool's transform mode. Inserting a fill colour stop now correctly interpolates intensity (useful for 32bit documents).

On anther post one of the Serif staff mentioned that the betas releases use customizations set up by prior betas, and production releases use customizations set up by prior production releases.
That should mean that the 1.7 beta will read any shortcuts you made in the 1.6 beta, but but not ones you made in the 1.6 release version.

And, for anyone who wanted Lasso node selection...

    LassoNodeSelection.mov

To use it, in the Node tool with a curve layer selected, you just hold Alt and either click to start polygon mode or drag to start free hand mode.

I have another sneak peak for you.

This one might be a little hard to follow, but I'll try explain it best as I can.  Something that has always bothered me is when I put a linear or radial gradient fill on something, and then try scaling or shearing the object.  The gradient fill is unstable in that it doesn't track the object transform.  This is because linear and radials fills are positioned relative to two key points, forming a line through which the gradient is rendered.  Elliptical (and bitmap) fills don't suffer from this because they have three key points, forming a rectangle in two axis.

So, I decided we need to fix that. See this video: CorrectedFills.mov

The top objects have a legacy linear, radial and elliptical gradient fill.  You'll see that when I shear the first two objects, the fill kind of moves around inside the object and doesn't conform to the shear.
The bottom objects have a corrected fill.  When I shear these objects you'll see that the fills continue to adhere to their placement relative to their object.

I then show you some new handles that appear in the Fill tool, which show you the "correction" points of the linear and radial fills, connected with dashed lines.  (You'll notice that the elliptical fills appears the same as they need no correction).  These new handles show you when a fill is being corrected, and give you opportunity to place the extra correction points if you so chose.  You can double click the correction point handles to adjust the fill into a conventional linear or radial fill in document space.

    Why is this important?

If I create an asset or a symbol, I can then place it, and transform it, and maintain the visual appearance without the fills distorting.  This is then especially useful for 2.5D drawing - I can use assets and symbols that were designed in 2D, transform them to grid plane (using the new planar tools coming in 1.7 which make use of shear and scale), and they will maintain their fills.
Of course, it is just generally useful, in that it kind of maintains a more WYSIWYG approach to gradient fill placement.

Just, don't ask about conical fills - they are going to take a bit more figuring out.

Steady on.  Not a great way to motivate us.

Priorities doesn't necessary just mean what we think is important, but also what things have to be done in a certain order, and whether those things collectively also are more important than other features which need attention. It is also a balance of how much work is actually involved in what might appear to be a small feature.

I have just spent months refactoring a lot of our internal tools in order to facilitate faster future development and enabling editing features across tools.  This was a big task, but the few changes and additions I have made off the back of this have already demonstrated that this was time well spent.  Now, as a user you will have no idea of the scale of the work involved in changing our internal framework while preserving the current functionality of our tools.

Software development is a fluid beast.  Only as our code base expanded did it become clear that things could be achieved in a different/better way.  Due to a lot of commitments already made, the changes I wanted to make got pushed back a number of times. I have now made them, and 1.7 will come with some significant additions - though the scale of work to implement them might still not be obvious to the end user.

This thread is to show a raft of new (hopefully innovative) features that are in the pipeline, and you are accusing us of pretty much doing nothing to improve the software...!? All of these additions will achieve 99% of the use cases that have been thrown up (while not tying you to a very limiting grid based drawing method) - the only exception being the ONE use case where you want to be able to easily replicate sets of curves built previously using known grid positions for handles. (If I am missing the other use cases, you will have to explain them individually). AND, I have already made many comments as to why this feature will conflict with our current tool usage, but I think I have even said that we will try and add it.  So what is the problem?  You are not going to be getting 1.7 Beta just yet anyway, so why is this turning into a rant?  We have heard your request, and while I would personally argue that placing curve handles on grid produces a very limited artistic scope, I will accept it is the way you like to work.
