  1. It would be great if Affinity Photo could create a gradient map from the colors in a selection.  The use case for this would be to do an expert level recoloring or color matching from another image. The gradient map should be created from an analysis of the darkest values/darkest tones to lightest values/lightest tones.

Affinity Photo can already do color analysis of the current image or other an imported image. It would take a few extra steps to create this.

This is something I do using a plugin for Photoshop called Infinite Unity - please see below:

  2. this beta really does run much faster. I do have a question into why certain documents don't open well in Designer  (MAS or beta).  For instance take a look at the network 01.design attached - it would open slowly on my Intel machine and now super fast on my M1 and even faster on this beta. Issue us that there are lines between the shading areas, even if I export (see network 01 from Designer.jpg). But if I export to eps and then open in Illustrator I don't get any of those lines (see network 01 for Illustrator export). I've run into this problem many times and not sure what the issue is but if affects a lot of my stock vector art.

    Hi there,

can i ask why on my macbook air i3 2020 , the beta does take 7 seconds to launch and the normal version , 40 sec? (everything up to date even the os).

On windows gaming machine works well the standalone version no problem detect.

yes I will confirm that this is almost the same amount of time for MacBook Pro 16Gb M1 - 7 sec for the beta and around 40 sec on the MAS version. It's no big deal but thought I would also add this info.

  4. Is there a way to tell Mac OS that Affinity Photo Beta IS Affinity Photo? The issue I'm having is that within certain apps such as asset manager Eagle - which is very Affinity friendly by the way - recognize all the Affinity apps but not the beta. So this leaves me two options if I want to use the "open with" right click option. First option - I cannot - I have to drag the image to the desktop and then use right click and then the beta shows up under Finder right click options. Or the second - make all JPEGs and PNGs use Photo Beta as the default app - which is what I've tried but it's honestly very impractical. I might revert to the Mac App Store app but if you tell me that this is so much better especially on an M1 MacBook Pro then I guess I'll just hang on.

  5. wow awesome thank you so much Affinity Jedi. I did create a blurred mask for a LUT using your example. See my first Photo example - Blurred LUT with mask file.  But please also see the mask with gaussian blur effect. I am not able to get the inner circle - the mask cutout - to blur without blurring the outer circle. The use case for this is to blur out the composite luminosity masks that I'm creating. Still, being able to blur adjustment layers using sliders is a big step forward for me to come out of the Photoshop closet!

  6. Please let me know if there is any update on this topic. today I really couldn't complete a project in Photo because there was not good way I could find to feather/soften a mask. I have tried sorts of strange ways such as Merge Visible on a mask view and then blurring that, then rasterizing again to mask. While that helped a little bit I was stuck another mask that I couldn't blur further. Photoshop has this at its most basic - Density and Feather properties for each mask. I can get by without Density - that's simply adjusting the opacity of the mask layer - and so the mask needs to be on a separate layer. I wish for instance to be able to apply the Gaussian blur layer effect to the mask layer - that would actually solve my problem. But there was no blur effect at at even when I took the level to 1000px. What I was able to was to use Refine Mask and finally there was an option to feather the mask - but only destructively. Once I hit Apply the mask would feather nicely but if I wasn't happy with the result I would have to undo and start over - no refinining/slider capability as in Photoshop. Please see mask example Photo document attached.

  7. I've been using the "R" key to rotate the Close Brush tool - but it rotates in large steps that make it unusable for the fine clone matching I wish to create. In Photoshop I am able to use Option + Shift + <left backet> or <right bracket> - and while this is a painful finger twister they do offer the fine controls. I would really love that in Affinity Photo - without the finger twisting - perhaps a much finer control by pressing the "R" key.

  8. I really would love to have variable fonts working on Publisher. Right now I have to go into Illustrator to work with a variable font for a title. Then I save as an AI file then paste into Publisher. The Adobe ecosystem supports variables. I believe other programs do as well and I have many fonts that are variable and cannot do a thing with them in Affinity.

  9. First of all, amazing that you have PSD bitmapping - that's amazing. I have several PSDs which use a pattern stamp and there is no such thing in Affinity (yet - soon?) but as a bitmap the fidelity is perfect. At the same time I was wondering if you could do the same thing with placing Adobe Illustrator files that don't interpret the same with from Illustrator to Designer/Publisher. However, I would think that Illustrator files are saved with a compatible PDF file, yet this doesn't show through. Or is this a different thing altogether. Attached find the screenshots and the sample graphic AI.

  10. I don't know if this bug has been addressed or not but embedded vector images get chopped off in the beta. I thought something was wrong with my document but I opened it in the retail version of Publisher and it was fine. But in the beta the fonts and/or embedded image was chopped off. Please see the test documents attached. I can send the files to your team with a direct link.

The logo vector is placed as an embedded vector on a masterpage. If I remove the embedded logo and place directly on the master page then there is no issue. Also there isn't any vector cropping in the document. So it must be some sort of rendering issue.

  11. I placed AD files into AP and export to PDF.  But when I tried placing AP files (thus keeping them editable) into Publisher the PDF was fine but a few people reported image corruption. Please see the correct and the corrupted image (screen shot from my client). I couldn't reproduce the corruption and many people that were sent the PDF didn't report either. But the corrupt image shows some of my worked layers.

Please look into this. I really prefer using editable image stacks and embedded files vs only working with fllattened PNGs.

I mean it's not really a hotkey, but you can press " 0 " twice to set the selected layer's opacity to 0%. You can then press " 1 0 0 "  to set it back to 100. Maybe there should be a hotkey though, idk.

no it's not about opacity - I use those numbers all the time. It's the transparency grid toggle, as in Shift-CMD-D in Illustrator.

  13. 1. ALL programs: Ability to right click on a layer and create an embedded object. That would allow the editing of that object directly within the layer panel. Currently the only way to do this is to copy the layers, open Designer or Photo and then paste the layers, save the file and place the file as a linked or embedded object (!). It would be great to have all this automated.

    2. Designer - vector perspective warp!

    3. Publisher: Variable fonts. I currently have to go to Illustrator and use the variable fonts, convert to curves, save as an AI file and place within Publisher. Seriously, no. Would love to just use variable fonts directly. That would be amazing. There are so many high level variable fonts that I can't use and wish I could. They would help my designs. Less important but still interesting are color fonts, but much prefer to should loudly for variable fonts.

    4. Publisher: custom bullets, as in vector objects that I can create and size within paragraph styles. I create my own bullets now this way but it's so time consuming as a custom design.

    5. Designer: short cut key to toggle transparency back and forth. Or perhaps a button.

    6. Publisher: sort fonts in a family by weight or width. Also in the family list ability to collapse (if not side, at least group and collapse) system fonts so that I can see only the designer fonts that I've installed. It take so much time to go through the list of system fonts that I will never select.

As @AdamW says, although it's true the earlier ADe 1.8.3.x betas and APh 1.8.3.y betas don't run anymore (for owners of MAS release versions because of the MAS check for an "valid build" in the 1.8.3 betas) the existence of the betas in applications on your Mac should enable the personas in APu beta

I have re-downloaded the betas and now I get this - see attached image. I bought APu directly and Designer and Photo from the Mac App Store - so don't know how to get a product key.

    Hi abarkalo,

We've recently relaxed the requirement and StudioLink should now work across patch level releases, i.e. you should find a mix of 1.8.3 and 1.8.4 betas should work together. If you do try it, and they don't, please let us know.

OK but they all need to be beta? Right now 1.8.4 Publisher beta doesn't enable StudioLink with 1.8.3 store versions. I guess I should download the older betas?

  16. I love all these improvement in performance. Publisher is a powerhouse and use it for a lot of production work. The only issue for me, and it's a big one, is that without Designer and Photo being simultaneously updated I lose StudioLink - something I can't live without. So the choice of better/incrementally fixed/faster or fully a working StudioLink environment is greatly weighted towards the latter. (You have brought us this crack cocaine and we are now addicts!). I know this has been asked before about finding an interim solution but will ask again. Or perhaps more frequent updates to the store version.

But to reiterate, I want to applaud this amazing progress, and thank you.

  17. Hi Affinity, I badly need the option to autosave - maybe a toggle icon or a prompt after a few minutes of working with a new file ("Do you want to autosave this file as you work?") which would also save history. I could then close anytime (without CMD+S) and all my edits are saved.

I realize that there is an autorecover function, which I've rarely ever used since Affinity software is quite stable. The problem, rather, is my own stupidity. I sometimes open a lot of files to edit and then decide to exit them - the software asks me "do you want to save?" and certainly I don't want to save all these files I just opened (especially if I made some test edits). More than once this week already I have closed down without saving documents that I had been working on. Really terrible, and then it happened again. I try and train myself to look before I close everything, but my reptilian brain doesn't always comply.

Hi I would like there to be a shortcut for transparency.  I need to switch back and forth quickly and also I can't always work in transparency mode with the grid.  But it take few few extra steps to go to Document then Color and then check Transparency, and then to uncheck later on.  If there was a menu item then I could assign a shortcut to it but it's not there.

Hi I'm just checking in again about a shortcut for transparency. I would like something like a toggle as in Illustrator's shift-CMD-D. In Illustrator I toggle back and forth quite a bit when designing. In Designer it's a bit of a chore to go to Document Setup > Color > set transparency on/off. Please show me a way to create a shortcut.

  19. My only point in my post is that it would be great to list the fonts according to weights, like InDesign does it (see right side of the image). See that the condensed group comes before the normal group, which comes before the expanded groups. InDesign may not show the optical widths of the font and I don't care - I can scroll down the list in a live preview. I care about this because it helps me make design picks much faster.

  20. I started a thread in feedback on font organization but now honestly this issue has turned into a bug or a glitch and wanted to address it here.  My original request/complaint was that Affinity Publisher (or any Affinity product) could handle font organization better, grouping the widths together as a condensed/normal/extended format. Adobe does it this way and it works well.

Now however, I sent feedback to a font foundry because I thought they had mislabeled SemiExpanded to be wider that Expanded. They told me it was the case with my software not their font. I looked again and realized they were correct and want to share a screen grab from Affinity and another from Photoshop to compare. Please see how the weights and widths organization is messy but the optical illusions of the widths. It seems the word length is squeezing down the sizes as well.

Since Affinity Publisher is a master layout assembly tool especially where typography plays a critical role, and where many designers use thousands of fonts and many superfamilies that are extremely difficult to navigate through in the current font organization scheme, I ask for the fonts to be displayed as they are with Adobe.  This would help tremendously. I love Affinity products but this is issue a thing to deal with.
