  1. also this happens when I copy the entire full screen layer. Will try on the beta to see if this happens on that.
  2. it started with small thumbnails. I switched to bigger thumbnails and seems to be fixed.
  3. Hi I was using the common CMD-J when I made a layer selection. I thought that the CMD-J function wasn't working because the icon layer was blank (black actually but no image inside of it). I later realized that the CMD-J function does work but that the image was not updating. A minute later the pixel layer thumbnail did show there was an image there. It was just very slow to update.
  4. Hi Everyone, I reported this problem first yesterday. I was also annoyed but there is a simple fix. If you bought Designer or Photo from the Mac Store then you need to be aware that the store doesn't immediately update the apps. There is a seven day update cycle (you can change this frequency with a Terminal command - but still you have to wait a day). Best solution, and what I did, was to delete the apps and then reinstall from the Mac store. A tiny bit of a hassle but then all will work.
  5. I’ve also had years and years of InDD files. What I was able to do in Designer, even before Publisher was in beta, was export uncompressed PDFs from Indesign and then open the PDF in Designer - even easier now with Publisher. You can even try that with highly designed PDFs that you didn’t design and now adopt the layout. Nothing else does that so easily and becomes so editable. Of course there are glitches and one user here reported facing page issues. Easy to fix. My glitch issue is that text gets strangely kerned and I find I have to reimport the text sections. Or simply copy all text. Paste in a pure text editor and then paste back. It’s not as difficult as it seems and until the true InDD to AfPub converter is out this is really a viable solution. I have converted over a hundred documents this way and now don’t even use InDD, and with the new Publisher released yesterday why would I?
  6. This would be very useful to me as well. The ability to pick any layer and right click and then select "convert to embedded document" would be fantastic. If I place an individual image I am only given the option to "replace image." If I do want to make an embedded document out of the image then I have to create a new Photo, Designer or Photoshop document and save in their native formats. This is a tedious extra step and wonder why it's necessary. Then I can place these file and it will show up an as embedded object. The usefulness of this is to be able to apply effects such as shearing, or any type of size transformation but when I "edit document" I see the document without these transformations. This is great for mockups.
  7. It would be really great to have a thumbnail view for spreads similar to what Adobe Acrobat Pr or PDF Expert has. In this view, the only function is to move spreads around, especially in large documents. You can move spreads around currently in the spreads page but it becomes difficult to view and arrange the document entirely in this view. Affinity InDesign doesn't offer such a thumbnail view either. This would really be a simple, unique and badly needed feature in my opinion.
  8. Will there be support for color fonts in Affinity, especially Affinity Publisher, in the near future? A year ago there were just a few of these fonts but now there are many, and I have a few in my collection. I've played around with these in InDesign and I'm hooked - you can do amazing things with these.
  9. Perspective skew is one of the very basic things I need to do, not only as a raster but as a vector. As a user said above, without this feature it is hard to ditch Adobe Illustrator. I can do without the other Illustrator features but not this one. Rasterizing and perspective skewing in Photo does work of course but then your artwork looks different once you bring your raster back into Designer and combine with the other pure vector forms. Or you can to create a super high res raster and that adds significantly to the image size.
  10. Yes I believe that Affinity can make a much better DAM than what exists right now. Adobe's Bridge handles Adobe files very well but it doesn't preview anything from Affinity - of course by design. Also, it is a slow beast and working with tags, especially hierarchical tags is a nightmare. I avoid this thing if I want my laptop not to run hot. Pixave is a super elegant DAM and beautiful and it supports Affinity very well. But its tagging system is a bit strange, and finally I let it go because there wasn't any universal search (no searching by tags or notes - what's the point?). So I just use basic Finder on the Mac is it's doing a good job but I wish thumbnails worked like they do in Pixave or Bridge. As for comparing Lightroom, that's only for photos but I would like the DAM to work with Designer and Publisher files (bound document modes also like PDFs). I do like the tagging and thumbnail UI in Lightroom, but again it's only for photos. And it seems slow where Affinity's DAM would be lightning fast.
  11. I realize that you can't deactivate Mac system fonts but I really don't need those fonts in my design documents. I need only my designer fonts of which I have many. Since no one can't activate thousands and thousands of fonts all at once, on any powerful system, I activate and deactivate only what I need per project. So it would be very nice to have a clean list of fonts - only see my designer fonts that are currently active. In other words, just hide not deactivate. Can there be a switch to turn the visibility of fonts on or off? That would be so great to not have to mentally block out STIX and all those other fonts that I never use and don't need and really make it difficult for me to scroll through the list.
  12. The idea is not to disable the system fonts - they are used in all sorts of Mac system apps. But in Affinity Designer I want to see my design fonts, not my system fonts. If there could be a way to disable/enable system (more so disable) then the font list would be clean and only contain fonts that are activated in Right Font, Suitcase, Skyfonts or Adobe Fonts. Right now it's a pain to navigate through.
  13. Like many people, here I was very excited to see Publisher beta finally arrive. I had been creating multi-artboard documents with Affinity Designer and that was a pain but also joy. A pain because I didn't have the advantage of creating columns. I had to hand place the text and manually break up paragraphs. Also when I added new artboards (which were document pages) to the document I had to move the artboards around and fit in the new artboards between other artboards, and then check the order of the artboards on the layers panel. A joy because I could layout object like a designer and mask, create sophisticated gradients and blends that went well above a glorified word processing program. Still, why would anyone do things this way, you might ask? Having spent years with InDesign, I found blending layers with the right kind of effects, masks or graphical editing really limiting. And layers in InDesign - well let's not get into that. I would give up often and end up creating the whole image in Photoshop and then pasting the Photoshop file - which really slowed down InDesign sometimes to a crawl. Other times I just created multipage documents (with layer groups) in Photoshop because it gave me the desired graphical result even though it was a tremendous chore outputting each page at a time and then pasting the pages together with Acrobat. I mention all this because the ability to have a sophisticated design software with pages is something that I've dreamed about for a long time. So if it's Designer with Pages for now, I'll take it and with a smile. Columns and widow/orphan control - great. Real image and text boxes, awesome. Yes I realize that the Designer and Photo links are dead right now but I can edit the embedded Designer asset just by clicking on it, just like Designer. I spent some time converting an entire multi-artboard Designer document to Publisher - and not a single crash - other times there was a crash just starting the program. So it's still a bit buggy but surprisingly not on the big document once I got going. Yes I realize it's early days. No hyperlinks on text - would be nice sometime soon. Or, fixing the master page issue that was discussed above (but honestly just cut and paste layouts for now - not that big a deal comparatively). But as soon as this gets to be a solid 1.0 release then that's my main design tool. Thank you Serif. I'm a full blown Affinity fanboy and can't wait for the new features, and also with Designer (maybe mesh warp?????).
  14. Burning sage. I really want Publisher this month.
  15. I really love Photo for iPad but this bug makes it impossible for me to do real work: When I use the smart selection brush on an image on iPad Pro and then I pan zoom around the image the selection is gone and the interface is non-responsive. I have to force quite the program and start over and just remember to not move the image - not ideal. Just like in the desktop version I need to pan/zoom around the screen in order to get a better initial selection before I refine. I have the latest App Store version. Also the latest 12.9" iPad and pencil. I don't have the iPad beta, although I did send a request for Test Flight - wondering if this was fixed in the beta version.
  16. Yes I work with a LOT of artboards as well and it would be great to have a Collapse All Layers and a shortcut key that is assignable for this. Just to be clear, I don't want to flatten layers at all. I just want to tidy up the view in the layers panels so that I can easily move the order of the artboards. What's really great about Designer is that you can select a layer/object and if you have "auto scroll to show selection in layers panel" then you have a tremendous navigation benefit, but then you have to clickety-click so many times to see the artboards all collapsed.
  17. Just an idea - but wondering if it's something of interest to others: Now that 1.6 Beta has Used/Favorite font categories - which I love - it would be great to have the ability to organize by user-created categories. For instance, I would organize into Headline, Body, Distressed, Geometric, Grotesk, Typewriter etc. I know that Font Book has categories but the problem is that it doesn't pick up fonts that I installed under RightFont, and it certainly doesn't pick up rented fonts under Typekit or Skyfonts. But I care about these font categories really in Affinity Designer, or Photo (but more so Designer) and for sure the upcoming Publisher. The idea is that once they are installed, however you installed them, then they are ready for use in Designer, so that should be the program to handle this. Alternatively, RightFont can also do this but they don't have Skyfonts integrated yet.
  18. Yes, I see the fonts used but when I open the document I get a message that a font is missing but I don't know where that is - I have many artboards.
  19. I just deleted a note where I was wondering about advanced ligatures, old style numbers and other typography features in OpenType fonts. I realized that it's in the Typography flyout on the Text menu. Anyway, happy it's there and also accessible in shift-CMT-T (maybe dock that in later versions?). Here's a helpful video of what can be done - great stuff
  20. Yeah you got me there. Photoshop's UI is really dated, and something more like hue vs hue in Resolve, or Resolve's highly precise eyedropper, ramp and matte refinement would be great. Still, if Photo can make incremental improvements here then I would be happy for now.
  21. Yes I agree that it is never a good idea to put actual design document in any DAM. However with template, mockup and element files it is a completely different matter. I want to find these design elements quickly by their tag, name and other metadata. I use Pixave for Affinity templates and Lingo for SVG, TIFF, EPS, JPG and PNGs. I greatly speeds up my workflow to quickly find and drop in templates/components. Here's one example: Someone sends me a Sketch file, and I don't want to continue editing in Sketch but want to import all the assets. I then use the Lingo plugin within Sketch. Then all the assets (I can pick auto or manual mode to import). Now all the Sketch components are in Lingo and can copy to the clipboard as SVG or PNG into the Affinity document that I'm working on. I don't have to deal with copy/paste from Sketch directly. All symbols are imported as well. I wish Lingo could would with Affinity but not as of yet.
  22. There is currently one product on the market (that I know of) that allows you to view thumbnails from Affinity Photo/Designer - Pixave, which you can get on the Mac App Store. Adobe Bridge doesn't allow you to view thumbnails, and you can't see a preview either. Lightroom is only limited to PNG, TIFF, JPG and RAW. Pixave handles more file types than anything I know of, and it previews Affinity quite nicely. It's the thing to use until Affinity comes with their DAM, which I'm really looking forward to.
  23. I would like to have an easy way to change ALL the specific hues in the photo, not just in a given area using the HSL adjustment layer. In Photo as in Photoshop I can use the HSL adjustment layer (Hue/Saturation in Photoshop). In Photoshop I can pick from 6 colors but I can extend or restrict the color range, or use the eyedropper tool to pick the correct starting point. In Photo, I can only manipulate the six set colors, and no eyedropper tool and seemingly no ability to extent/restrict the range. What I can do in Photo is select Select Sampled Color and then apply an HSL adjustment - but I just can't seem to fine tune as easily. In your Black and White adjustment layer you have a Picker. I would like something like that in Photo, or at least a method to duplicate what I do in Photoshop - see attached photo.
  24. The PSD displacement file didn't want to post- it got covered to a PNG - let me try again here . displace_jacket.psd
  25. HI Sean, Sorry it took me so long to get back with you. I tried this again in Beta 4 Affinity Photo and with the same result - I really can't get displacement to work there. In Photo and in Photoshop I save the channel with the most depth info - typically the red channel. I do a Gaussian blue of 1 pixel and I create spare channels and in Photoshop I save to a PSD file and in Photo to a PNG file as it says to do (and also there is an option to load layers underneath - which I also tried). Please see the results in both Photoshop and Photo. See the names of the files to see the result. Also I rasterized fonts in Photo and created a smart object in Photoshop. Please lmk what I'm doing wrong. I can't get this effect to work and this is a much needed technique for me. Alex displace_jacket.psd
