  1. I could swear there use to be resource area in these forums, I was going to post this question there, but can’t find that section.

My bad mods, if this question does not belong here.

I’m looking for brushes whether paid or free that will allow me to paint textures that look like this: (low quality image sorry) think brushes that can produce: muscle striations, wide bumps, brain matter or cells from biology:

    3BA3AA47-8EB0-4F28-89D7-7BAAD91B40E8.thumb.png.52622de7b8a0c1503096018ba62f0fd5.png

    Thanks!

According to https://uk.globaldatabase.com/company/serif-europe-limited in 2019 the company had 74 employees.

hmm… I’m not sure if from a corporate product, service software standpoint , if that’s good or not.  Though, my illiterate mind on such a subject, tells me that’s a good amount of employees, seems healthy to me. I hope this is still the case.

  3. tl,dr: Serif may be going through some tough times, may sell.  The lack of significant updates, company silence are sculpting thoughts into this direction of thinking.

I personally hope Serif is doing well.  I LOVE affinity photo on my iPad. It’s been a blessing for me. I would love for it to continue to grow and evolve. I have no problem paying for updates, extra ui tools… whatever, to support this wonderful app. I hope what the video expresses is not true!

That said, this video did a good job in my eyes laying out some, strong points that had me thinking (does the community or mods agree with any of these points expressed?)

it’s not a negative video, it’s objectively expressed:

The discussion in the video, stems from this comment: (screen-capped from video)

    F5A023BD-3A56-49E4-8BDC-587E5F10F851.thumb.jpeg.ffe04b7c9cab6b029d4ec5d9692de52a.jpeg

  4. Here is my file I am trying save to my ipad (notice all the layers are ticked)

    5A141290-A497-4E68-BE83-07E4F244C1C9.thumb.png.df83b7dcfee00daefc91339a870c2156.png

Now here is the bizarre stuff, when i save it to my ipad as a .png, here is what I get:

    1498A7A8-7777-4532-B0AE-D05D4EFAD537.thumb.png.5952dbe5a472c6167de0b3f74eb8fa48.png

Only affects .png, works fine with .jpeg

This has been going on since last month, I was busy and forgot to post, been studying blender and haven’t used affinity photo until today, ran into this bug -> again.  I figured this would be fixed by now. No one else is experiencing this?

    I have latest iPad: 15.4.1

    Affinity Photo: 1.10.5.280

  5. I have mucho love for serif, for bringing Affinity Photo to iPad. AP being my main driver in the serif family of suites.

That said, I agree with the sentiment many feel on here, but my gripes have to do with inclusion of 3D and lack of many modern features such as auto select subject, multitask and many others.

3D has entered a phase, to where it is now simpler to integrate from a software development stand point.

3D can integrate & coexist with 2D applications -> this has already been proven by procreate.

I recall an article that was shared here in these forum about two years ago, where the Affinity lead developer spoke about 3D and how they have been tinkering with it in R&D.

Well, procreate has proven it’s doable.
A 2D creation app, can coexist & cohabit with 3D.

If such features like 3D and extrude arrived on affinity photo. Affinity enters a whole new era of creation! Even cutting down on the work time to get things done.

    As many pointed out here:

Nomad Sculpt - 3D sculpting app, built by one guy! Nomad Sculpt is now the leader of sculpting on iPad & iPhone (they took this title away from forger sculpt).

ProCreate - Now allows import of 3D models, which you can paint on. Look at all the videos being put on YouTube from this community. They are so happy to interact with 3D. Procreate, literally created a whole new market within it’s community of 2D creators.

Here we are with these powerful M1  iPad Pro’s, working with these powerful apps: procreate, nomad, mental canvas & Voxel Max

When I experience these powerful apps, then I come back into my affinity photo, I’m instantly greeted with the sensation of how primitive Affinity photo is.

Don’t get me wrong I LOVE Affinity Photo, but I’m not blind, it’s primitive compared to what’s going in the creative space, on iPad.

We don’t even have a multitask feature. Every other creative app offers this, that’s how far into primitive society we are in, with Affinity photo.

I really do hope the update we are going to pay for, (which I don’t mind paying) The 2.0 update has something mighty for us.

  6. Followed along this Photoshop Tutorial on Affinity Photo iPad:

My Follow Along Piece: I cannot seem to nail that beautiful searing orange, rim light Rikard has on his orb. It’s like a very soft white glow within the orange glow. If somebody can figure that out, please show me how you did it!

Original Photo: In good conscious, I cannot place all the assets here, Rikard Rodin offers them for free through his youtube, just check description in the video.

  7. @Paul Mudditt

yep, I didn't know that at the time due to what I learned on here in affinity forums a few years back regarding .psd.

I pretty much expressed, what you just explained in a different way in here but coming from a lower level of understanding.

I am just now, after this incident- coming into the understanding of these file types and the data technicalities involved with them.

  8. @Lee D Thank you, I will test that!

I never go into develop persona. What’s funny I watched a tutorial on it, few weeks ago matter fact.

I purchased an affinity photo (pc version) course in domestika, that I was following along on my iPad. This course actually.

I remember it has sliders and stuff I can tinker with… but that’s about it. I didn’t get from that tutorial, develop can be used as a sort of filter, but then again, I’m never in there, so it’s one of those… out of sight, out of mind things.

@Paul Mudditt Ah the legend! My man Paul!

Honestly I would love to follow affinity photo youtube tutorials - sadly… there’s three reasons I don’t follow youtube tutorials on affinity photo:

    —————————————————————————-—————————————————————————-

    1. Nobody is doing it for affinity photo community on the level photoshop community is in the realm of creative photo manipulation -> which is what I crave to learn. The talent and skills.. is bananas on that photoshop side.

Daily, I’m alternating between Youtube Channels like: Phaserunner, Benny Productions, Nemanja Sekulic, MDMZ, MikeM, Encreate, Nucly and Photo Manipulation click on that phaserunner link and see instantly what I’m getting at.

Nobody is doing it on these levels for affinity photo community - not that I’ve run across.

    —————————————————————————-—————————————————————————-

    2. Rather, I run into affinity photo youtube channels where the viewing experience is not pleasant, nor entertaining to watch. Instead I’m greeted with quickly put together videos that are monotonous and boring.

I pay money for serious, deep dive tutorials on domestika and gumroad. I don’t go to youtube for that.

When I’m on youtube, I gravitate to fun, simple to follow along creative photo manipulation tutorials

Affinity Photo community unfortunately, doesn’t provide this.

However… Paul if you know of any youtube channels, that’s doing it on the level.. like any of the links I placed above.. please share that with me. I’ll support them! The only channel I know of, that’s cool and pleasant to watch is @Bethany Acorn she is nowhere near the level of the people I have linked above, but she’s awesome and I’ve learned from her as well.

affinity photo revolution youtube channel is not on the level of any of creatives I have linked above. More of retouch channel.

Olivio Sarikas youtube channel is cool to, but he’s not at the creative photo manipulation levels of the links I placed above

    —————————————————————————-—————————————————————————-

    3. Mostly, I have lots of success following along photoshop tutorials. There are times like this one, where what I am following in PS… is not considered “a thing in AP and it is considered “a thing in PS” that’s why I come ask here if I can’t find it 😁

That said.. I’ve learned a lot on affinity photo iPad due to our PS brethren.

It’s not hard to translate into affinity (at least not for me) most likely, because I’vebeen learning this way for about 6-7 months now. Here’s one of my creations following a photoshop tutorial:

  9. This issue has not been solved.. but resolved. To recap:

    1. HUGE loss of image quality bug

This occurred in the sandbox and is actually affinity photo being buggy (this was not an imported .psd file)

@walt.farrell Thank you for the sandbox terminology!

This file was created in the affinity sandbox and lived in the sandbox. At the moment, the only way I am aware to temporarily fix this image quality loss issue is to..

    1. Remove mask *uncheck it*, then re-apply it.
    2. Delete the layer and then undo delete.

Sometimes it takes a few deletes and undo’s to fix, same goes with reapply mask technique.

As I was finishing up my project yesterday every time I added a new effect quality loss bug would kick in, and I would have to go back to deleting layers and undoing the delete after.  Here is the .afphoto file:

    mdmz - surreal earth_tut.afphoto

    2. .psd export & import bug

Will chew up your edit saves, and spit them out in bubbles!

It does not care about the effort or hours you put into your edits. It will disrespect you *quitely*

As soon as you import your .psd work, that’s when the disrespect hits you. Your stuff all rasterized and your edit not there.

If knew already this good for you - for people in my boat and not knowing -> buyer beware.

  10. @walt.farrell appreciate you breaking down what sandbox means (first time I’ve come across the jargon) I also appreciate you sharing with me the reason to use save copy, I’ve always seen it, but never used it… since I’ve always exported as .psd.

This export as a .psd habit ingrained in me… from when I first came to these forums few years back, and I was told… .psd was the best way to go. Stuck with it since. That changes today.

I wonder how many of the hundreds of edits, I have in my icloud saved as .psd - are not fully intact with all the edits & auto rasterized, thus losing quality of the original image  (I shudder to even think)

Strange to me… .afphoto is not an option within the export file type selections.

    CD1BC606-C49E-4197-8399-712868DB7DC4.thumb.jpeg.0c33c9b761f758b502325a473e68ffe7.jpeg

ANNDDD… that answers that, after this ordeal… I’m out on saving my files as .psd - never again. (I’m really scared for the hundreds of files I already have saved in my icloud as .psd)

I just opened up the same project that .psd was giving me issues with, this time however… I opened the project while saved as .afphoto saved in my iPad drive. HAPPY TO REPORT all my edits & quality intact.

  11. thank you @Wosven

You are correct, would had been less confusing posting underneath my previous post. My mistake on that one, apologies for the inconvenience. noted for next time.

Also.. thank you for the AP help breakdown, I’ll need to look further into those meanings & definitions, I’m not familiar with those concepts.

I just recently started getting better with the affinity photo app, I still don’t understand a lot of the stuff (jargon, concepts etc).

Rasterizing so… from what you’re saying, exporting as a .psd file “potentially” automatically rasterizes my files? I never knew this. I’m guessing afphoto does not rasterize exported files?

I did not save this file as afphoto, but most likely the auto save feature did and stored it on my hard drive. I will run a test later and see if it’s there or I’ll save it as a afphoto and report back here. (underneath this post) 🥳

Still I must make aware.. the issue is happening on my main project file, which is living inside my affinity photo ipad app. This project was never imported into affinity, I am assuming this is the .afphoto version.

  12. @Wosven

Thank you for the responses. Answering your questions.

Linked Resources or Embeded? Not sure if I understand your question. I think I do. I downloaded the images directly to my iPad from their website sources. Pexels, Unsplash etc.. Thank you for the linked images bug (will steer clear away from linked images)

Rasterize before posting file? To my knowledge I did not rasterize to avoid quality loss of image.

Heavy Earth Shadow Bug? That was me creating an exposure, that I purposely made dark, then inverted the exposure so I can soft brush in a shadow. The file should had reflected that. I have no idea why it downloaded for you test way… looks like my file was potentially corrupted.

The good news - I fixed the problem just now, (1am my time) but you helped me discover another one. See my opening post.. I have updated it.

  13. Update Exporting as.psd file is not saving all of my edits

    discovered by  @Wosven

my uploaded file which is below in my original, I thought was corrupted, due to @Wosven bringing a detail he noticed while trying to help me. Turns out my file is not corrupted. After my resolving my initial issue, I exported my .psd and overwrote the original… well, Affinity is not saving my work thoroughly when I export as .psd to my iCloud drive (I have 1 tb of free space) it’s not saving my edits entirely.

I even tried exporting to my cloud as a new file, with a new name, thus not overwriting the older file. To no avail, same bug.
Seems affinity photo saved every edit, except my exposure used as a mask edit.

Here my initial edit, see red arrow, I inverted exposure, used it as a mask and painted back in with white soft brush to create the dark shadows on the earth lower body

    B8BAC8F5-0A1B-4060-995A-0789E22984E7.thumb.jpeg.f2b9e4d93f8ed5e7ba18395fb3d7c5a7.jpeg

Here is the same image, but after import it to affinity from my iCloud, notice all the other edits intact except… exposure edit is ignored:

    0FC91DC2-BE09-48AF-AC3E-5B776E5374E5.thumb.jpeg.5ac3af61ed6cae0a9186d495f6d66266.jpeg

Could this be the bug? exposure being inverted and used as mask when you paint on it with soft brush? it’s not.. I tested it with newly created graphic. see ellipse below.

Turns out it’s not an exposure edit bug. This is a good thing! I created a test ellipse which I did the same exposure effect. The same edit was imported that I exported. So I’m stumped. Looks like my earth work won’t be fully saved.

    64EBBBF6-2D0D-445F-AC1C-B99630A77C21.thumb.jpeg.58c4beccd4106f08992c21c0850bc0d7.jpeg

Maybe it’s the quality of images above? within the 2000 & 3000 resolution.

    Update Fixed Image

10 or 11 hours later resolved it by accident.

I deleted one of the affected layers by accident. Then I double tapped finger to undo my accidental delete -> this returned my layer, but most importantly brought back all its quality. I repeated this step for all the other layers and this fixed them as well. Everything back to super quality.

    Original Post

Randomly got hit with a mighty quality loss of images. Happened instantly, when I tapped on a layer I was about to edit. All layers affected, caught the monster loss - instantly. This is a random bug that occurs occasionally.

I must say… extremely disappointing. Hits me while I was studying.

    Troubleshooting Steps I have taken:

    • Close out project it, relaunch it.
    • Remove mask of affected layer and then reapply it (this works sometimes, somehow refreshes the pixels and brings back the quality)
    • Close out Affinity Photo and relaunch it
    • Closed out my safari browser, email, youtube that were opened in the background
    • Rebooting iPad did not work

See my iPad specs & affinity version in sig below.

I have attached the .psd below 👇

    Before Quality Loss:

Removing mask then reapplying mask, worked for one layer but not the others affected by quality loss:

  14. @Dan C Apologies for my late reply.

My responses in green, underneath it’s question. Hope this helps.

Update, has not happened since I created this thread, even when using the same document.

However, it should be noted… this bug occurs sporadically & randomly on any document, it does not discriminate.

    • Does this happen every time you use this export option, or only occasionally?
    • Yes, with this export option and has occurred several times this month and previous month with this same export option

    • Does this happen with multiple documents, or only the one shown in your screenshot?
    • Multiple documents

    • What are the exact steps you're taking here please?
    • Issue occurs randomly & sporadically right after I export. Please see video clip (does not occur in this clip) just showing steps taken before it happens
