If you go Edit > Preferences > Tools and untick "Use mouse wheel to scroll" then it zooms if you press Alt and use the scroll wheel (as you prefer) or Ctrl and use the scroll wheel.
It's nice to have a choice :)
Shift plus scroll wheel will pan left to right.
Just with the mouse
You can press the scroll wheel down and turn it to scroll.
Press the scroll wheel down and you can drag the document up/down or left/right
That's a lot of useful functions with just the mouse.
Edit. Now that's funny, when I first tried that it worked with Alt and scroll wheel plus Ctrl and scroll wheel. I just tried it again and it only worked with control plus scroll :huh:
Edit again. Ah ha, it zooms with the right hand "Alt GR" held down but not the land hand "Alt". How strange.
