It does seems like there could be a way to ease the setup for Japanese and Chinese users without changing the whole approach to default fonts.
Perhaps when changing the user interface to Japanese the app could check if the user had not set a default font of their own and if not prompt the user with something like "The default font is Arial which does not support Japanese characters. Do you want to change the default font to Hiragino?" On Windows it would likely be Yu Gothic.
And something similar for Chinese.

I thought its development has stalled since the classic version hasn't been updated for years.

Though honestly that's just the Pro version and I can‘t see any real AI based additions there. So IMO the AI in it‘s naming means just that it can export to Ai vector format and nothing artificial intelligence specific else here.

Very good news.
At least it seems to have resolved it for me, although I'll keep an eye on it over the next few days and post again.
What did I do? I deleted Affinity Publisher (and Affinity Photo and Designer) and downloaded Affinity Publisher directly from the App Store (from Apple).
It's working 100%.
Opening everything quickly, no problem.
I haven't reinstalled Photo and Designer yet (for fear of complicating things). I'll do it later.
Let's see if this can be a solution for those who have the problem.
Previously I always downloaded directly from Affinity.
I don't know if it makes sense but it worked. Maybe something has already been “adjusted” within the App Store (?!!!).

A new pixel grid option is available in all apps under the View menu. When set to on this will expose a pixel grid (as per the dpi of your current document) when zoomed in beyond a certain threshold.
By default the grid is set to grey, but you can customise the colour and opacity of the pixel grid, along with the colour of standard grid lines, within Grid and Axis settings.

I should say in general we are now aiming to do slightly smaller updates more regularly than before so we can test and release in smaller chunks. This will allow us to get improvements and fixes out quicker, as well as having overall benefit to the stability of the apps.
The beta phase will now be shorter (4-6 weeks) for any update, and for that reason we will be avoiding any significant changes to functionality during beta as we focus on fixing bugs and correcting unintentional behaviour. This does mean that more of your improvement suggestions may need to wait until a future update (e.g. like some of the Move Data Entry suggestions you made during 2.2 beta which have now been added to 2.3), but please keep those suggestions coming!
Getting the 2.3 beta
If you have not enrolled into the beta program yet and would like to take part, you can do so here. This will immediately give you access to the latest 2.3 beta builds to try for yourself.
If you are already enrolled in the beta program you have two options:
1. If you still have the 2.2 beta installed, you can now run up those beta versions and you will be prompted to update them to the 2.3 beta.
2. If you have uninstalled the 2.2 beta, you will need to go back to Your Account -> Downloads and product keys and find your previous order for the Affinity Beta Software Program, and you can download the 2.3 beta from there.

I have five Noto families displayed in my Publisher menu. So I guess to some degree it doesnt work but it has kept the noise down to unnoticeable. 
I set this up some OS's ago. Couldn't say if it works on a new install. 

The bug, I think, occured when adding 2 closed curves that don't have fills.
Are your curves closed or open? Do they have a Fill?
I think Serif views it as correct that open (unclosed) curves without a fill are deleted by the Add operation.
Perhaps @Serif Info Bot could have someone clarify this for us

Hi - pleased to say we have now added OCIO v2 support in the latest beta (2.2). We'd really appreciate if you wanted to try it in the beta (sign up to beta program here), but if not this means it won't be too long before it's made available in the release version.
 

Unfortunately, not in Resample mode, which seems to do a "zoom to fit" after cropping, which can be a bit annoying when cropping a large image to a much smaller one

We have just made 2.2 live across all App Stores and our website. As always, the feedback we have received from you all during this beta has been an incredible help in both shaping the new features as well as squashing many bugs!
The build we have released is the same as RC3 (build 2005), meaning for the time being whether you use the latest beta version or switch to using the release version they are the same. If you anticipate taking part in the next beta you may wish to keep your current beta version installed, as this will be updated on auto update when a new beta is available. This will either be a 2.2 patch if we feel one is needed, or moving straight onto a 2.3 beta.
It would be impossible for us to do what we do without your support, and I just wanted to say a huge thanks for everything you have contributed to this release.

I like the current Shape Tools in Affinity as of now, but two that I feel are missing from the toolbox are a Spiral Tool and a 3D Box Tool. Here's one example of a project where I needed a spiral in particular.

The design for this I did mostly all inside of Affinity, but I had to move over to Inkscape to get the spiral shape because I realized that I had to do this manually in Affinity to achieve the same thing. Seems like a pretty useful feature, especially if it also allows jagged spirals and custom shapes. That way one could make even more complex spiral shapes than just a regular spiral.
Another shape I would love to see is a 3D Box that can do perspective. I have been able to do this a bit by combining a bunch of shapes and masks to achieve a similar effect, but having a properly supported tool for this would be even better. Inskscape has a tool like this, so that's a good place to look for inspiration!

I long for the day we can do a simple "Paste Replace". By that I mean I have copied something and wish to replace the selection with it. Copy a triangle, select a square and have a menu command/contextual menu command to Paste the triangle into the rectangle's location replacing it. Hell I would love to be able to paste in the location I right-click on, using the context menu.

I agree that I was surprized that @v_kyr's video showed a genuine geometric addition doing the job, while with v2 here it did not. However, as your title implies,it is a bit like adding pears and apples…
And if you consider that creating a Compound in a single click (with parts still editable, and you don't even need to convert to curves first) or use Shape builder are doing exactly what you wanted, I don't see why it would be a problem?
I would add that the Compound way is definitely more elegant than what I proposed (but that one can be done in every Affinity app, the others require Designer). 
Sorry that your good old path seems not to be usable anymore but thankfully, there are many roads leading to Rome…

You can even easily get that wanted result with ADe v1.10.6 by geom adding the two curves, or making a compound for these.

Thanks for this feedback. We have now decided to include the raster based perspective and mesh warp non destructive live filters from Affinity Photo in the Pixel Persona of Designer and that is now available in the 2.1 beta released today. This allows the warping of images, embedded documents and other non-pure vector objects. The main thing to bear in mind is that these are raster based effects, and will mean any vector data you warp using these live filters will be rasterised when you come to export.
It would be great if you wanted to try it out in the beta and let us know what you think - you can sign up to the beta program here.
 

The issue "Creating a table and then placing an XLSX file will cause the cell text to inherit the previous table's stroke width" (REF: AFB-7158) has now been fixed by the developers.
This fix is included in build 2.1.0.1709 (or later) which is already available as a customer beta and will be included in the next release.

A few new features have been added to the stroke panel...
1. As has been commonly requested we have now added the ability to 'balance' dashed lines using a new toggle button on stroke panel. This means that the dash pattern is automatically rescaled between any cusps in a curve - making things such as corners of a rectangle or the start and end of a stroke look correct.

2. An additional dash and gap have now been added to build up more complex dashed line patterns (now giving you 3 dash and 3 gaps) making, among other things, two dot chain patterns possible. On desktop you can also click-drag the dash and gap indicator as shown to adjust the value. 

3. A new button has been added to clear any arrowheads on a stroke - just making it more convenient than having to open the drop downs to set both ends to "None".
 

 
 

Hi - I'm pleased to say we have now added the ability to extend dash patter to 3 dashes and 3 gaps. Also can now create balanced dashed lines. It's possible with a compound object but would be nice if I could apply the appearance to text directly.
Since the dev team acknowledged this as a bug, I hope it will be fixed soon.

At least there's a news to hope for.

I can see Serif confirmed on Instagram that they were starting work on a blend tool and hoped to have it ready this year, though to be fair to Serif I wouldn't hold them to that timeline. Does seem like they're aware of the ask and are working on it which is great
