ashf reacted to MEB in Letters Spacing V/A TRACKING / KERNING...
The button you have clicked in your screenshot (first control on the top left) affects the kerning (space between two characters) but you have the whole word selected in the workspace. Place the cursor between two letters only and the buttons for the kerning in the Character panel will work. If you want to adjust the space for all letters simultaneously in the word use the Tracking controls instead (the controls right below the Kerning).

ashf reacted to gafvert in Why is View tool (hand) the top default tool and not Move tool?
This may seem like a small detail, but it constantly trips me up when opening new documents that the top default tool in Affinity Photo is for some reason the View tool (Hand, for panning around) and not the arrow pointer Move tool. This is different for some reason in Photo, whilst both Affinity Designer and Publisher follow the convention of most other tool-based graphics software that have move/select tools as the first default tool and the view/pan tool placed by the zoom tool.
Seems extra strange since the View tool is probably the one tool I never use as it's so easy to pan around with middle mouse button or space bar. So if you don't have any good reason for this, please change the default top tool to the Move tool and move the View tool down like in your other software.

ashf got a reaction from komakolud in Images getting Reduced in Quality when copied from Affinity.
I can confirm this. I posted similar problem with Photoshop before.
It seems that only Adobe's have this problem.
It acquires an image object as a vector object(SVG/PDF contains an image).
Clipboard content has a bitmap image also but it's not used when pasting it, Adobe's prefer PDF/SVG content.
Tried on Mac also and the same result.
Pasting to Office or Corel has very little or no quality degradation.

ashf got a reaction from Gatada in Artboard size is different than output size
I think artboards should be always aligned to pixel grid and integer pixel size regardless of the snapping setting when the document unit is pixel.

Would be nice if the color selector was shown on the 1 column tool pallet also.
Currently it's shown only on the 2 column tool pallet.

I've added your report to the issue for this.

ashf reacted to loukash in Perspective Crop?
What I'm sometimes working on is cropping the rest of my old low-res archive photos of LP covers to square thumbnails for my offline record collection database. For this, a combination of the regular Crop tool and the Perspective live filter works okay. Both are non-destructive which is ultimately a Good Thing™, so you can always adjust without crushing valuable pixels, as many of my old documentary photos were shot only at 640×480.
In PS, the perspective crop was handy because usually it would more or less assume a square.
In Affinity, first I'd crop to a square which is slightly smaller than the "deformed" LP cover on photo. Then I add the Perspective live filter and adjust the perspective so that the corners of the LP sleeve match the crop.
Eventually I may temporarily uncrop again (Document > Unclip Canvas) to see the background, as a color reference when adjusting colors. Then I'd crop again to the final size. As noted, this is all non-destructive up to JPEG export.
(But for the record – no pun – meanwhile I'm actually scanning record covers in 4 passes each side, then stitching them with the Panorama persona. APh is pretty good at that, and the workflow is more flexible than in PS. About the latest 100 images I've uploaded to discogs.com/user/loukash/images were now stitched using APh Panorama.)

ashf got a reaction from Dave Vector in Layers Guide (V1) - Understanding Masks, Moves, Crops, Clips, and Adjustments
Yeah, the crop icon is shown on layers regardless of whether it's vector or pixel.
If it's a pixel, it supposed not to be a vector mask.

+1
Figma is #1 UI design/prototyping tool now. Figma support is important.

P.S.
Figma consider this problem is on Affinity side.

ashf reacted to Frank Jonen in Please force integers on Artboard pixel dimensions
Sometimes (like 98% of the time) moving Artboards around creates floating point pixel values in their position and dimensions.
This always results in rendering errors (white gaps, wrong export sizes, distortions). The problem has not been addressed since Artboards got introduced.
There's no benefit to having sub-pixel accuracy when moving Artboards around on an infinite canvas. It only creates problems.

ashf got a reaction from loukash in True integer only mode for pixel unit
Would be nice if you could add integer only mode to the pixel unit.
(not hiding decimal point by rounding. actual data should be integer)
This also should be applied to objects that's resized or rotated.
This is useful for who work on pixel based artwork.
It can prevent unwanted change of size or blurry image without checking each object that's pain.
Also an object could snapped to another object that has decimal numbers on position/size, this is annoying.

@ashf I appreciate your feedback. I see you are referring to my original (first) post in your comment.
I admit my first attempts to articulate the layer behaviour in Affinity Design was not perfect and I have since updated the descriptions and the entire explanation into a single handy sheet. Please see my February 19, 2021 post. The attached PDF contains the same information as the inline PNG.
"The first example" you are referring to is now in the "Task" column labelled "2. Rectangle Crops". I hope that makes more sense than the original description. I made the "Task" labels short descriptors and hopefully easy to understand. So to be clear:
The Rectangle is on the layer above of the "Q" The Rectangle Crops the "Q" The Rectangle is Clipped by the "Q" The Rectangle Masks the "Q" The Rectangle is on the layer below the "Q" Does the updated February 19, 2021 post help?

Partly yes, since some things are generally also not very well documented here. - There is always room for improvements in certain areas, documentation is one of them.

Hello!
I made an updated version of the "Layers Panel - Visual Summary", now called the Layers Panel Cheat Sheet. The procedural flow is now horizontal, so hopefully it's easier to understand. The link to the PDF version is below. Enjoy!

Hi,
I noticed the Drop Zone (green dotted area) for 5. Rectangle Below was not correct. Below is the corrected version and downloadable PDF. I also took the opportunity to make it clearer. Don't mean to spam ya'll but hey, it's free!
