ashf reacted to loukash in K Only option of Image layer for RGB documents
There's no point in doing that. In CMYK, you're colorizing because you want it to print on a specific spot color plate or use a specific CMYK tint.
In RGB, you don't specify any print plates.
In RGB, if you want to colorize a placed RGB image "on the fly", without adding adjustment or filter layers, you can do it pretty simply like this:
place an RGB image:
make it b/w using the Gradient Overlay effect set to black-to-black "gradient" and e.g. Saturation blend mode:
colorize using the Color Overlay effect e.g. in the Screen mode:

ashf reacted to walt.farrell in Add/hide Affinity files in PDF & TIFF formats to improve efficiency (like Illustrator and Photoshop)
That is already possible. If you open a raster image file (JPG, TIFF, PNG) and make changes that do not result in adding layers (that is, the file remains a flat image file) then you can use File > Save (or Ctrl/Cmd+S) and overwrite the original. But you cannot use Save As; that would give you a native format file (.afphoto, etc.).
If you do add layers, and try to Save, you will be prompted to Flatten the file. If you flatten, it will overwrite the original file; otherwise it will create a native format file.

I agree with you (in my applications I divided into Save/SaveAs and Export many years ago), but I will add for completeness.

ashf reacted to loukash in Preserving layers when opening EPS and Ai files
That's a limitation of the standard EPS format.
This is probably because AI was saving some proprietary code with the file to keep in natively editable. Keep in mind that until some 20 years ago, AI's native file format was more or less based on EPS (PostScript) which is also Adobe's invention. They could be injecting custom code inside and get away with it just fine. That doesn't mean that other developers can easily reverse engineer it. Same as with native *.ai files: Designer can only read them if you save them in AI with the PDF stream. It's the PDF within that Designer can read, not the native *.ai format.
Apparently the SVG format can preserve layers then. Good to know!
I don't have Vectornator (only on my iPhone I think…) but I checked with VectorStyler which is aready positioning itself as the upcoming jackofalltrades in the vector arena:
Well, no luck. And no wonder. It's just not in there in plain text for other apps to read. Yes, standard EPS is plain text. Open an EPS file in a text editor and read for yourself.
When the actual EPS human readable plain text data part ends, there's this "epilog":
Emphasis mine:
There's obviously the layer data in binary code which only Illustrator can read.

ashf reacted to GarryP in Affinity photo marquee move function is missing.
If I understand correctly what you want, this has been in Photo for a while (at least), but you need to be using the Quick Mask functionality.
Move, stretch, shear, distort, it’s all there – just manipulate the selection as you would any other layer.
See attached video for two examples of usage, both simple to do.
Note: See the replies by loukash below for some important information about how this works.

Non-native formats in Save command may cause the confusion.
Like in other software, if you save as a non-native and continue to edit the file, you will make the change on it but the original native format.
People often don't notice it and later they will regret.
So saving non-native format from Export command is logical and safer.

It's there all the time, even twice depending on the crop mode. Watch the context toolbar:

ashf reacted to icreate in Multiple columns for palettes
I love the Affinity suite of products but the one thing which bugs me about the interface is that I can only have one column of palettes on the left, one on the right.
In Indesign I have three columns on the right, two of which I usually minimise and one (normally for character and paragraphs etc) expanded all the time. On the left I have one (minimised) with not-so-frequent-but-handy-to-access palettes.
At the moment I have so many tabs next to each other and on top of each other that it drives me mad!
We really need to have multiple columns for storing/organising palettes, especially since monitors are so large these days - there's a lot of space being wasted which could be used more efficiently.
I also think it would be handy in publisher/design to be able to share docked palette locations for similar functions; i.e. character, paragraph, swatches etc, but understand this may be unworkable due to the difference between the available palettes in the respective apps (unless Affinity want to prove me wrong - please, prove me wrong!).

ashf reacted to Dan C in Designer SVG Import & Copy/Paste Into Figma
I agree, when exporting SVGs we already have this option under 'More', toggling Use Relative Coordinates will use 100% rather than absolute values, so it's certainly already possible - the log I have created with our devs is to add the opposite of this toggle coupled with the 'Copy items as SVG' setting under Preferences > General

ashf reacted to Dan C in Copy paste vector to Figma
Thanks for the information provided here!
As confirmed in the below thread, I have logged this with our developers to ensure they are aware of this and to request an option to copy SVGs to clipboard using 'absolute' values.
I hope this helps

ashf reacted to lunde in Japanese Vertical Text
I may have stated this previously in this thread, but I use InDesign on an almost daily basis, along with other Adobe apps by virtue of having a lifetime Creative Cloud subscription. I bought Affinity Publisher a year and a half ago, mainly to play with it. I believe there was a promotional price at the time. In other words, I am spoiled in that I am able to use a mature app that includes excellent features, such as vertical writing. Still, InDesign is far from perfect, and I still maintain my skills that expose bugs in that app, most of which are font-related, because that is my specialty. I also know how to bring InDesign to its knees. Click here for an example from four years ago.
Anyway, Affinity Publisher is a more mature app than VectorStyler, and as a result, I believe that it is more difficult for them to change their layout paradigm to accommodate a new writing direction. More mature apps need to consider issues, such as backward compatibility and so on, when making fundamental changes to their layout paradigm. This is less of a concern for less mature apps, such as those still in Beta.
I, for one, am grateful that there are apps out there, such as Affinity Publisher and vectorStyle, because any competition can serve as motivation for Adobe to improve InDesign, and to fix bugs sooner rather than later. For example, I found quite a few bugs in InDesign's support for Variable Fonts, one of which is a very fundamental issue that affects Illustrator and Photoshop as well.

ashf reacted to Kiarian in Improvements for Game Art (Video)
Neither Affinity Photo or Designer are 3D painting applications. You're not going to beat the free Quixel Mixer, which is insanely powerful and has yet another update today. Kirk23 makes a great point that if the Affinity software is going to have any sort of gaming specific functions, it should compliment these 3D painting applications. It's not trying to compete with them. I also noticed today that both Affinity Photo and Designer now have NVIDIA accelerated features. Nice!

ashf reacted to kirk23 in Improvements for Game Art (Video)
As an artist who works for games I would be perfectly ok without 3d paint. There are lots of cheap or even free 3d painting soft around. I'd rather like Serif make A Photo and Design useful in gamedev with layer comps allowing to export color /roughness/normal from a same document with easy switch, make transform links to set material depth based blending and material compositing , maybe node UI for procedural filter with input from different layers , height to normal live filter, normal to curvature live filter, warp offset live filter and so on.
In a word there lots of features that would make it popular in gamedev before 3d painting.

Is it really that hard when you're backed by Apple with probably utopian resources? I bet that's been the case since the beginning of Procreate. In fact sometimes it even seems like apple hired the team to develop the tool.
I know I'm throwing super wacky speculation out there. In any case, it's awesome that they did it.
Let's see what Serif comes up with :).

ashf reacted to Dan C in Is there a way to use the Photoshop feature "Filter Gallery" (or similar) on Affinity Photo?
Hi @Aldeney,
Welcome to the forums
Unfortunately Affinity Photo doesn't directly support a built-in 'filter gallery', my apologies. This is something our developers hope to add in the future, however we cannot provide a timescale for this at this time
In the meantime, you might want to check out the Tone Map persona (shown around 3:30 in this tutorial) - which can add certain tonal creative looks to an image, but will not allow for the more 'artistic' looks, such as Coloured Pencil, Watercolour, Rough Pastels etc.
Macros are a predetermined set of steps that another user (or yourself!) has recorded against a document. When 'playing back' the Macro, the steps you recorded will automatically be performed on your open document. This means you can add multiple adjustment and filter layers to an image with one click and these adjustments/filters/blend modes etc can be set to create the 'artistic' looks you're hoping to achieve.
You may be able to find macros that perform these steps for you available to download in our Resources section of the forums, these are macros created by other community members for the Affinity apps, some of which I've linked below -
Pastel Watercolor Effect
Graphic Novel Effect
Add Film Grain
Affinity Photo - Macro Bundle 1 (15 Styles)
Pencil Effect Macro
Classic engraving effect (copperplate engraving) Macro
B&W play Macros
Matte Colour Macro
Another option is to use third party plugins, such as the one recommended above by ashf
I hope this helps!
