Japanese Vertical Text
ashf replied to Pedro Dias's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
@William Overington @ fonts works in only certain condition. and Affinity need to support this in order to use it. it's an ancient method to implement vertical text and available only on Windows. Modern software usually don't use @ fonts method. so vertical text need to be implemented in modern way, not @ fonts. -
I think it was a glitch occurred when upgrading 1.6 to 1.7. I updated preferences and now it's working....

Punctuation and justification in Japanese text
ashf replied to Focx's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
FYI, most of software that can handle Asian text have an option to turn on/off Asian rule. Dev team doesn't need to make them work in non-Asian language. Asian users will turn on these feature explicitly when they need. So it should be turned off by default. Then it won't be confusing nor become a problem to non-Asian users. -
This is related to the problem on topic below I think.

Japanese Vertical Text

This is little old but might be informative. CJKV Information Processing http://shop.oreilly.com/product/9780596514471.do Also LibreOffice handles Asian text perfectly across multi platforms. Dev team can refer their method to implement it to Affinity since it's an opensource project. -
There are keys to change input mode on Japanese keyboard. "英数" and "かな" "英数" is the key to change input mode to English/alphabets. "かな" is the key to change input mode to Japanese character. Similar to Ctrl+Space but they switch the mode to specific one directly but toggle each other. But these keys does not work on Affinity. I think because they have unique control code. You can simulate these keys by using Karabiner on English keyboard. https://pqrs.org/osx/karabiner/ Please refer this page to setup those keys by using Google Translate. https://beadored.com/the-original-karabiner-elements-command-switching-eisuu-kana/

Punctuation and justification in Japanese text
ashf replied to Focx's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
This line breaking rule is called Kinsoku Shori in Japan. Almost same rule exists in other Asian languages such as Chinese or Korean. Punctuation, hyphens and closing brackets are not allowed to be placed on the start of a line. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_breaking_rules_in_East_Asian_languages -
When I type arrow keys(i.e. down then left) while typing Japanese(refer p1), the same sentence I typed will be added next to the sentence I typed.(refer p2) on Japanese input, there are two steps to input text. First, type a sentence I want and this is input preview and the sentence will be highlighted.(means it's temporary and not regular text) Then when I type enter or return, it will be fixed as regular text and highlight on the text will be disappeared. Usually if I type down arrow while previewing, I can choose predicted sentence below input preview.(refer p3) But I can't choose predicted sentence on Affinity. While previewing input, commands to manipulate predicted sentence are assigned to arrow keys on Japanese input. So I'm supposed to be able to choose a predicted sentence with arrow keys.

ashf replied to jilkyking's topic in Feedback for Affinity Designer V1 on Desktop
Yes this is definitely needed in east Asian countries. Products of Adobe & Corel has this ability. Also QuarkXpress as well. -
Cmd+Space is old fashion switch command of macOS. Still many people assign this as input switch but default command(Ctrl+Space)

[Photo&Designer] Frame Text - Vertical layout
ashf replied to 立川同学's topic in Feedback for Affinity Designer V1 on Desktop
Yes, this is definitely needed in Asia. There aren't much Asian users? Apple finally added vertical text support to Pages recently, Corel/Adobe/Quark has been supporting vertical text since more than 20 years ago. Even html or epub has vertical text layout. -
I see, Thank you.

Please set triangle tool to equilateral triangle by default. Most of time I need a triangle is equilateral triangle.

Crowdfounding
ashf replied to brunovinhas's topic in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
Good idea. Might be applicable to both Mac and Windows platform for future development plan. -
That's not enough for asian text. There are many special rules. https://www.google.com/search?q=asian+vertical+text&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwid7-nc_cPMAhUS4mMKHRFKAt0Q_AUIBygB&biw=1136&bih=751 OSX's Core Text supports vertical text, why not Affinity? Adobe or Corel supports it since long time ago. Looking for it.
