RobEW got a reaction from SrPx in Introduce Yourself
Hi. I'm Rob. Getting back into "hobby" photography after a 10 year sojourn pointing and clicking with phones etc. Previously I was a film SLR user. Steep learning curve! Now photography is digital it seems much can be achieved with post processing. I really don't like the idea of a subscription model so am wary of Adobe. Serif Affinity Photo seems like a good possibility, and I like to support local industry where possible. (I'm from Nottingham). So I had a free trial, purchased and have been watching tutorial videos and having a go. It seems to have lots of high end features. I may need to upgrade my (Windows) hardware. I think I also want a DAM-type product to help in viewing, selecting, storing and cataloguing "keepers". Looks like that needs to be a separate product. Looking forward to getting to grips with Affinity Photo, not as an end in itself but to improve my renditions.

I've heard a few good things about Darktable over the last couple of years. Since it's free, it wouldn't hurt to give it a spin, see how it stacks up.

edit: ...provided you're on Mac or Linux. Strangely enough, they don't provide a Windows rev.

RobEW reacted to MEB in DAM update
    Hi gerritboer,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
Yes, we would like to develop a DAM (see our FAQ) but it will still take quite a while before we get there. There's other things coming first.

    Hello everyone,

I'm a "serious amateur" with about 50 years of photography experience. I recently starting shooting with Olympus MFT equipment after selling my Sony APS-C equipment. I had been using Capture One Pro For Sony but just couldn't stomach having to pay $300 for the Pro version that supports all camera RAW files. Also, I never really liked Capture One for several reasons. I won't rent software so Adobe was out. I posted in a couple of photo forums and someone suggested Affinity Photo. What sold me was:

    1) Upcoming iPad support as I REALLY prefer mobile editing. (Any idea when that will be coming out?)
    2) Focus stacking - One reason I bought my EM10 II was for the focus bracketing and now I don't have to use a standalone program (Zerene Stacker) for stacking. I can do everything in one place - NICE!
    3) Regular stacking - I dabble in astrophotography.
    4) The price!

I've made my way through about 1/2 of the online tutorials and find them very well done, easy to follow and extremely helpful although I'd happily pay for a written manual.

    Thanks for the welcome, Andy!

If you're sitting comfortably.....the MacBook Pro 15" with Retina Display. It had to be a laptop because my workhorse souped up desktop with decent sized monitor will still be my office computer, and I couldn't work with a smaller screen.

And it's going to have to pay for itself, that's my motivation. I have a niece who designs and sells to Liberty, etc etc, so I have something to work towards (and we'll be able to discuss Macs, now). Also, I'll never give up CraftArtist but I'm well into the stage where I want to be working with my own original designs (aspirations for the DT shop??).

Virginia Woolf famously said  'a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction' - this is what I've bought, a room of my own to create graphics. Can you tell that I'm excited  :D  :D  :D ?

Thanks for the link - bookmarked  :)
