toltec got a reaction from Alfred in Is there a way to add the Phi Grid composition grid overlay?
As I understand it, Golden spiral is Phi.
"Phidias (500 BC - 432 BC), a Greek sculptor and mathematician, studied phi and applied it to the design of sculptures for the Parthenon. Euclid proved that the diagonals of the regular pentagon cut each other in "extreme and mean ratio", now more commonly known as the golden ratio."
If that is all Greek to you, and you want a simple grid, rather than the spiral, you will have to do as v_kyr suggests.

I don't know why there is a left border gap but for straight text note the difference between using a sheared rectangle & rectangle converted to curves:

Mandatory tags would be a compromise, such as:
Platform Mac, Windows, iOS Version (helps with instructions) Designer, Photo, Publisher Version (helps with version specific feature & bugs) All of this info most people should know or be able to find easily, so a post with all this info just stops having to ask those question dead. People can then search for Windows, 7, Designer, 1.6.x and get a list specific to that. This helps with troubleshooting and potentially cuts down on repeat posts of the same issues.
I don't think many people would complain about this, I mean a few seconds for a clearer post ain't much.

I agree with haakoo.
Some features work across both apps so it is of value to see Designer questions even if you use Photo. I certainly learned from Designer questions and videos when I only had Photo.

Technically, that's not true.
You had a tongue before you were born, so it is a few months older than you. Just sayin'

I think it means the same as "bank balance".
Something that is never there when you need it.

toltec got a reaction from Polygonius in stroke selection
The way to do it is to use the Outline feature
Make a selection
Go, Select > Outline
You can decide where the Outline is applied. Outside the selection boundary, both sides (centre) or inside.
Drag the slider or set an amount in pixels.
This is outside the selection.
It can then be filled with anything. Edit > Fill
It can be partially stroked by using a paint brush.
Or you can even add an adjustment layer or a filter layer to just the Outline selection. This is Recolour but you can use exposure, curves or even blur filters.
You can paint inside the selection outine with blur brushes, dodge and burn tool etc.

toltec got a reaction from Polygonius in Pallet
Select the Eyedropper Tool
Hold down the Control key and click on a colour. That automatically creates a new Palette,
Control + click on another colour and that will add that to the Palette. etc etc
Here I ctrl + clicked four times with the Eyedropper and got a four colour palette.
You can right click on individual swatches and delete then, if you want.

toltec got a reaction from Alfred in Affinity Designer Manual in PDF?
I'd buy it as long as I get an "Affinity User" discount

You might want to consider revising the layout of that page. The first thing I see below the heading ‘Affinity Designer Complete Feature List’ is a pair of ‘Buy for Mac’ and ‘Buy for Windows’ buttons, as if the feature list is being offered for sale!

You can also right click and Create Style
then right click on and rename the style as firstdefence describes (above)
or if you copy the item (Ctrl + C) then you can Paste Style (Ctrl + Shift + V)
there is also a copy and Paste FX option
Depending on what you are doing.

toltec got a reaction from Alfred in Stacking with a masked border
Set the layer blend mode (of the line) to Erase
Note that the blend mode affects the whole layer but only "erases" where there are pixels. So duplicate the top shape, set the fill of the duplicated shape to "None" and set the layer blend mode to "Erase".
One problem you may find.. The erase layer will erase anything in the background too.
Group the shape layers to contain it
