I have the photo adjusted! Thanks for the help. I understand how to do this now. This screenshot shows the balanced compared to the original in my layout.

Assuming you are using an adjustment layer, it is all about layer position.

The boat on the left is a duplicated layer.

If the adjustment layer is above all the layers, it affects both layers.

You need to drag the adjustment layer so that it is nested inside the layer you want it to adjust, then it will only affect that.

Drag it to the nesting position below the layer.

The short answer is, you can't.

You will have to recreate the "hidden" area from scratch, or by duplicating from another area. Maybe using the Clone tool.

It can sometimes help if you can copy an area from another image, or images, and make one. Like Frankenstein.

A bit hard to know where to start.

I think much of your problem is that you are dealing with a low resolution image. The toolbar shows 215.6%. None of these pixel selection or refine tools tools work very well on low resolution images. Not enough pixels! Personally, I would use the pen tool and create a vector selection which is far more precise and works better when there are not enough pixels. Or use a higher resolution image?

You can combine selection tools, make sure Add is selected on the toolbar and that, er, adds to the selection.. If New is selected it starts a new selection and deletes the old one.

In very simplistic terms, Matte edges refines the edges, if unticked it doesn't. Only untick it if you want to use something like the feather option, rather than refining the edge.

Foreground adds to the selected area (clear), Background adds to the masked area (red). Feather blurs the edges of the selection which helps to blend it in when you paste it onto a new image, Best not to use this until you know what you are doing. You can feather afterwards.

Normally, leave Matte edges ticked, don't use Feather. Use Foreground if you need more selection area, use Background to remove it.

If you press the spacebar, that temporarily selects the hand tool, so press it and you can click and drag the image around (pan). Release it and you are back to the last tool you were using.

Unless both images were matching sizes to start with, the sizes will be different. There is nothing you can do about that, just resize it after pasting. Of course, in theory, you should make sure that the sizes of both pictures match before you start, but nobody ever does

    I would continue with PPx9

Even when Publisher arrives, it will take a while before it surpasses PPx9 in features so I would suggest you buy it when it is released and gradually migrate your work over, creating new projects on it.

It won't really matter if old stuff is on PP as it won't suddenly stop working. I had stuff on Pagemaker years after moving to Quark and InDesign.

Don't get me wrong, I like Linux. But you have to be realistic.

None of the software companies you mention are serious consumer suppliers, not even small ones.

Like Microsoft (office type stuff), Adobe, Quark, Corel, Apple, Cyberlink, Movavi, Magix or Serif. Surely that tells you something ?

Corel tried a few years back but it was a disaster.

It is not just numbers that count, it's the type of user.

I got quite interested in Linux a few years back, possibly to offer print or DTP services, still use it sometimes (Mint)

It seems that most people use Linux as a way of turning an old PC into a browser. The typical user seems to do everything possible to use free software, like a badge of honour. The other users use it for servers, specialized requirements and so forth. Linux is an enthusiasts machine.

That's no good for a commercial graphics product. Compared to a Mac, which has traditionally been a Graphics machine with people willing to pay. Even Windows users will pay.

The big issue is lack of support. If something goes wrong, you are on your own. The shiny Mac or PC has umpteen shops willing to supply and fix, for a price. Commercial companies need professional support! How many shops do you see offering Linux machines with back-up?

In the Develop Persona, in the Lens panel you can rotate and scale the image at the same time.

By scaling the image inside the document window, you effectively crop it. Although it's only really useful to get rid of the missing corners (caused by rotation)  as there is no X - Y positioning. You can of course, use the Lens panel to rotate the image and then crop it using the crop tool but it is destructive. You can't unclip it in the Photo Persona afterwards.

toltec got a reaction from crackers441 in Converting to PDF
Affinity files are not AI. AI stands for Adobe Illustrator, a very different thing altogether. Affinity files are .afdesign which won't be recognised by anything.

To "convert" an Affinity Designer file to a PDF you "Export" it.

In the menus, go File > Export and select PDF.

Because you are having it printed, in the Preset: dropdown menu select PDF (for print) as shown below, which should be fine.

Click on Export and that will open the filer and create a PDF for you.

As for converting to CMYK that should not make any difference to how well the PDF works, but it might make a difference to how well the colour of your design matches when you get it printed. I would suggest you have a proof made for the first few designs you try.

You don't even have to click Apply (in the UI), you can just press the return key.
So if "To Selection" was a mode for the current cropping tool that is saved as preference, you could just
    - select something
    - press C
    - press return
    - done

Sorry, but that is a terrible idea. Not cropping to selection, but destructive cropping which is what it would mean. One of the best things about Photo is a non-destructive workflow, including cropping (normally) which is like having the undo facility. Why would anyone want to change that ? Personally, I would recommend Photo to anybody because it does not throw stuff away. Surely it is better to embrace new improved methods, especially if they could prevent making mistakes. And what is the difference between crop to selection and a normal crop ?

What you want is simple and easy to do in Photo and without losing all the data. Although you can still delete the data easily enough afterwards if you want to but as a two step process, which at least makes you think before deleting.

If you prefer to work in a destructive way that cant be undone, fine. You need a program with a Destructive workflow. Try Photoshop, a destructive cropping process and only ten times the price.

Surely better to stick with Photo though and adapt to a non-destructive workflow though? Personally, I much prefer the Photo non-destructive cropping. If you really feel you still need it, you could put in a feature request.

If you need, it is easy enough to make a crop. Just crop the document as normal, press the C key and draw a crop box, that's it. No need to even make a selection first. Admittedly, the information is still there, Photo is persistent in trying to save you from yourself, so go Document > Flatten and it's all gone for good.

Here are two very easy non-destructive.methods that crop to a selection and still keep the original information

Make a selection first, press Ctrl + J. That copies the selection, and only the selection, to a new layer. copy it, (Ctr + C) then go File > New From Clipboard. It makes a new document exactly to the selection  Plus, the original information is kept in the original file for safety.

Alternatively, draw a Rectangle above the the image, right click on the rectangle layer and go Mask to Below. Just the "selection".will be in it. Copy the layer Ctr + C and then go File > New From Clipboard again.

Ctrl + C then File > New From Clipboard is a two stage presses, and the original data is still there.(just in case) which has to be a good thing for safety, right ?. File > New From Clipboard.even has a keyboard shortcut or you can easily set your own.
