toltec got a reaction from Serif777 in Text on Path Always Upside Down
It' simply a matter of typing it one one line and then adjusting the orange or green handles.
    The green handle starts 'Pete'

See the position of the orange line in the (second image) to starts 'Est 1977'

You can use baseline shift to move the text below the line.

Not sure what you mean by "FX style"
If it is a layer FX, tick on the FX icon on the layer and untick the effect.
If you just mean a style (Styles panel) try Edit > Defaults > Revert

It is also worth exploring the Mask option. Unlike Selection, it does not Rasterize the path, so it is non-destructive. I like making selections with the pen tool but nearly always Mask so I can edit later as it retains all the advantages of vector (clipping) paths.

When you make a Selection, Affinity deletes your path and that's it. You just end up with a piece of mostly uneditable pixel data and would have to start again. If you do make a Selection, I recommend you at least make a copy of your path first.

With Mask, you can still edit the path later with the node tool, move the selection, resize it, and so forth. You can even add a feathered edge and adjust the feather size later or remove it..

The first picture is a path with a feather applied. The second picture is the same path, modified later with the feather removed. You couldn't do anything like that with a selection!

Maybe if they introduced a simple non-printing (or non output) layer command ?

That way you could use shapes and snapping (as described above) but switch the layer off for output.

toltec got a reaction from NotMyFault in invert mask in Designer?
If you need to "invert" a mask, Ctrl + click on the mask layer to make a pixel selection, go Select > Invert Pixel Selection (Shift + Ctrl + I) and click the mask button. You end up with the original mask and an inverted mask.
Hide the mask you don't want (the original).
It might not be "elegant" and it is not a vector mask but it is an inverted mask, if that would help ?

I think you have answered your own question.  Linux is for nerds (no offence).

Most people. i.e. paying customers, lack your expertise. They expect to buy a working PC, like buying a TV or Phone.

As I said, I experimented with Linux but there was so much missing. No printer drivers ( Mitsubishi dye sub printer) no green screen software, no internet design software, no DAM, no colour management software. The list was very long . . . . .

99% of people struggle with a basic PC but at least there are support shops on every street corner. For the average user, there is just no support for Linux, unless you know a nerd

Things may have improved on the software support ?

This is a first rate image viewer / previewer and it says "RAW support", although I've never tried it for RAW images.

It works very well, preview files with either icons or full screen, press "E" and it launches them straight into Affinity (after setting it!)

    And it's free!

That reminds me of a few decades back when people either bought VHS, Betamax or V2000  (I think that was the name) video players. Probably before your time
The problem was, all the Hollywood films were on VHS format, so although VHS was the worst technically, everybody bought VHS machines because the bottom line was, people just wanted to watch films. The other formats just died out because 99.9 recent of people don’t care about the technology running the technology, they just want the technology to work and benefit them when they press the Start button.
Linux appeals to the .01 who prefer playing with technology than using it. Generally speaking, they are very poor customers. Surely the smart move is to buy the machine that plays the content, rather than buying the wrong machine and crying out about bad hardware (or software in this case) buying choices because it doesn’t play the content?
BTW, I still have a Betamax machine in my loft, if anyone wants one?

Your logic is illogical.  It is "bloody amateur", not "bloody amateurish". There is a big difference between amateur, amateurish and professional. There is especially, a huge difference between the meaning and use of the words "amateur" and "amateurish"

Allow me to include a free English lesson for your benefit

    Dictionary---

    Amateur
"a person who engages in a pursuit, especially a sport, on an unpaid basis"
(I believe this would include most Linux software writers, who gets paid for free software?)
Being an amateur can be good, Olympic gold medals are won by amateurs!

    Amateurish
"done in an unskilful or inept way"
    (nothing good about being amateurish)

    Professional
"engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation rather than as an amateur"
(this would include professional software writers like, Microsoft, Apple and Serif)

Compared to many Linux products, I would frequently say Microsoft software is amateurish, even if it is written by professionals. However, professional products are accountable, if it doesn't work you can get your money back. The software is subject to consumer laws. If it is advertised falsely, the vendors can be prosecuted. Linux is (mostly) an amateur (not "amateurish") product that is not accountable. If Linux screws up your machine and you lose everything, who can you blame ?  If a free Linux product harvests all your personal data and sends it to Russia or North Korea, who do you prosecute? And how much free (amateur) public domain software has stolen data ?

I know it is probably very hard but Microsoft has been prosecuted.
    https://www.computerworld.com/article/3089071/microsoft-windows/customer-wins-10k-judgement-from-microsoft-over-unauthorized-windows-10-upgrade.html

    https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/03/24/microsoft_windows_10_update/

That is why I, as a professional, prefer to pay for software, bought from established professional software companies, like Serif and Microsoft. I genuinely find it hard to understand why any professional cannot see the difference between using professional products compared to using amateur products. Professionals are subject to laws (like data protection) too. If I use Microsoft Access on a Windows 10 machine with Bitdefender Anti-virus. If all my customer's data is stolen, as long as everything is up to date, I have done my best and would not be prosecuted for negligence. If I use a free Linux product on a free distro without a professional anti-virus, I probably would.

There are frequently huge data breaches (recently Uber) are they all running on Linux servers and systems? Nothing is perfect. At least for a smaller company using acceptable professional software, there is a "get out" clause. And many will be using their computer to store customer records. So Linux has no place in their busness. IMO

Try explaining that to your customers. If you are using the latest Microsoft software with anti-virus, they probably wont blame you. But if you say you were using free software, without anti-virus to protect their vital data . . . . Then there is Marketing. "we am using free software", compared to "We use the latest high quality commercial software to provide you with the very best" or "I am using a cheap compact camera" compared to "I use the very latest Nikon DSLR". If you look cheap, your customers will think you are cheap. I know that is unfair, but that is reality.

Most people see Linux as free stuff, for geeks. It needs a big facelift before it will be taken seriously by "normal" people. Linux has an image problem.

Obviously, people who employ full time software engineers or pay for and use products like Red Hat and employ certified engineers are in the "professional" category. But that is very niche.

"This is for advanced users which know what they're doing"

Exactly. Nobody can use Linux unless they are willing to become an expert in Linux. That means an amateur, or enthusiast. A professional wants to use a computer to make money not play with it.

For example, do you own a car? Are you capable of fixing every single thing that goes wrong and did you install the engine and spray the car yourself? If a taxi driver's car breaks down, does he try and fix it himself? Does he change the tires every time they get worn?

And your example to sort out complex issues would not work if your only Linux machine does not connect to the internet. You need a second machine to browse the internet to fix the first machine. If the taxi driver lives 200 miles from the parts supplier, how does he drive there to buy the new transmission part?

By nobody to go to, I thought I made it clear that I meant nobody to go to. Your suggestion is that you spend hours fixing it yourself. That is unprofessional. You should be earning money, not playing around with one of the tools of your trade.

That is not the same as getting someone to fix it. Which is what 99% of professional users would do.

This is a perfect example of why Affinity should never get involved with Linux and is exactly what I found when I tried Linux.

Who do you ask when something doesn't work?

It is an unsupported installation so nothing to do with Serif.
No Linux developer(?) is going to help.
    Wine won't help.

You are on your own !

If you had a PC you could find loads of people to help, even Microsoft (well, maybe not Microsoft)
    Or ask Serif.

Serif (or any software company) couldn't help unless they have the exact same version of Linux as you.

There is a ‘Protect Alpha’ button on the context menu of the Paintbrush Tool  which stops you painting on transparent areas.
There is a Preserve alpha on many filters which stops the transparent areas affecting the result of the filter.

Shift plus click to add objects

Press down Alt and drag a marquee completely around the objects you want. You do need to be outside the first object when you start to drag or it copies the object.

If you press Alt and the right mouse button, then drag a marquee, it will select objects the marquee just touches, rather than completely surrounding them. You must release the left mouse button first. Again, you do need to be outside the first object when you start to drag or it copies the object.

Alt plus click selects hidden (or buried) objects.
