  1. If you make an Elliptical Marquee selection and press Ctrl + J (Layer > Duplicate) that will duplicate your selection onto a new layer. If you then select the Move Tool you can move that layer over the area you want to hide. That would be the closest method to what you are used to in Photoshop. Note. Cmd + J on a Mac.
  2. No. You have to think a bit differently because the iPad works differently to what us old-fashion types are used to with 'proper' computers. There is no disc or memory as separate items. There is just memory, although unlike computer RAM you don't lose it if the iPad gets switched off. I expect that is why the 'Delete' option in the burger menu is actually called 'Close'. There is not actually anything on disc to delete, only a file 'open' inside Designer memory to 'close'. Probably! What is stored in Designer's memory is all displayed in the home screen, there is no separate storage. You can choose to store it outside Designer's memory if you want, such as 'OnMyiPad' or 'iCloud', then it becomes a more permanent 'hard-disc' type file. That needs to be a deliberate 'Save' action though. If you did save the file outside Designer, you would then have to find it in the iOS Files app and Delete it. You troublesome file is something different altogether. The fact you can't 'Close' it is not something I have seen before (not that I have that much experience of Designer on the iPad. Who has?). I guess the internal file has just got corrupted somehow, so there is nothing more you can do. Either ignore it or delete and re-install Designer.
  3. That is wrong. On Windows, press the left hand Ctrl key and use the mouse wheel. At least, that works for me. Not sure why the right hand Ctrl key doesn't work
  4. Like this? I just used a rectangle for the border and set a stroke around it, the inner rectangle for the image is the same.
  5. I don't think so, saving as a Default does not work for gradients. If it helps, you could create your own swatch in the Swatches studio. Select Gradients in the swatches panel, apply your custom gradient to a shape, then right click and choose 'Add to Swatches' > 'From Fill' See my lovely yellow to red gradient fill. Note: When you do that, make sure neither handle on the Gradient is selected or it just adds the handle colour as a solid colour, not the whole gradient. You could also create a Style by right clicking and choosing Create Style (Style 9, below). You can set a Style as a Default (Edit > Defaults > Save) but that applies to every shape you create, which may be a pain.
  6. Hi @msk If you click on Picker, you can click and drag on the image which places a point on the graph, relative to the tone where you click. I think that's what you want? Note: You must click and drag slightly. A simple click won't do it.
  7. Files inside the Home Screen will not necessarily appear on your iPad. Unless you actually saved them out to permanent storage, they are only stored inside Designer's allocated memory. They are not permanent files.
  8. You don't have any Studio panels at all showing, so the Character or Paragraph panels won't appear. Try Studio > Reset Studio or have you, as @MEBsuggested dragged the studio panels off using a dual monitor config?
  9. I hardly used the Desktop version until Serif introduced the light interface and have great difficulties with the iPad. The button I use the most is the Tooltip ?. I don't understand their fetish with black unreadable interfaces Great software ruined by an awful interface IMHO. I really like the software with the light interface though, so I'm hoping they will see reason and listen to the complaints. At least a choice between unreadable black and usable light interfaces for normal people. It is even worse for people who have less than 20/20 vision, like most of us.
  10. I would make a template document 400 x 500. Use a solid black background (fill layer) and place a rectangle on top, the rectangle being sized to give you the correct borders. You can then place an image inside, which will "crop" itself to the rectangle. Click on the Insert Inside button and Place the first image (as shown below). Then save the document as your template. Simply by loading, resizing and moving an image inside the rectangle, you can adjust the position and the cropping. To change the picture each time, double click on it and a Replace Image button will appear on the Context Toolbar Load, resize and position the next image, and so on with each picture. That makes for a very simple and very fast workflow. You only need to make the document once and every picture you do will end up the same size, same resolution and with exactly the same border. No matter what size it was to start with or how you crop it.
  11. As @Pšendasays, "Pixel Persona". This gives a different set of tools to the main Draw Persona, including selection tools for cutting images out of backgrounds, etc. It isn't quite as powerful as Affinity Photo but still does a pretty good job. The Refine Selection feature is the same as in Photo, so you can use that to refine the edges of your selection, cut out around fine hair etc.
  12. The app should tell you, although that depends on where you bought it from. Try reading this
  13. Agreed, but what I normally do is zoom the image out so I can see both and use portrait mode.
  14. Hi @GFS I tried something similar to your file and it worked as expected, just like on the desktop version. The only way I could get something similar to your problem was if I set the opacity of the mask layer (pressing the more button) to 25% or similar. Sorry if it's no help
  15. Sort of. You could convert that node to a Sharp (or Cusp) Node, but that would make the segment on the left a line, not a curve. Although, if you then dragged on that line segment, it would become a curve again but the handles either side of your node would be independent, so would not move together. What exactly do you want to do?
  16. They control the snapping of nodes and handles when using the Pen tool or Node tool. Top left: Align to nodes of selected curves Top right: Snap to geometry of selected curves Bottom Left: Snap off-curve handles Bottom Right: Snap all selected nodes when dragging
  17. To fill a selection go Edit > Fill or (Shift + F5) There is a Liquify Persona or a Mesh Warp Tool. Lasso tool is in a group with the marquee tools (called Free hand Selection Tool) Set to Polygonal If you make a selection with any tool, press Delete to make it clear (transparent if the document is set to be transparent).
  18. As @Old Brucesays, make sure the brush is not set to Subtract but also make sure you have not unticked ‘Show Pixel Selection’ in the View menu. It is possible to make a selection but not realise it. If not, can you post a screen grab showing your settings.
  19. By "it," I assume you mean Affinity Photo or Affinity Designer. I have a laptop running Windows 10 and both apps work perfectly Great software ! The beta of Affinity Publisher also runs Edit. As stated below, there are trial versions available. I keep forgetting about that.
  20. My ex wife always used to say that women had more patience than men. Then she lost patience with me and left
  21. You have closed the Layers panel, perhaps hitting the cross by mistake? Go View > Studio and tick Layers to show it again. View > Studio > Reset would reset your Studio to factory defaults.
  22. Could be, ‘assume’ is a word of two syllables and it wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been more ‘ass’ than ’ume’
