Good question, Alex! I always thought the whole idea of hiding layers was to exclude them temporarily (e.g. when exporting an image) but keep them available for later work. If you don’t want to keep them, you might as well delete them in the first place.

I just found this thread and will answer this open question. If you're sending a file for printing, you may want to send a leaner file version with only the essential otherwise you might have to send a huge image file, multiple times the size of the original. Sending a PSD file allows for minor corrects as may be needed at the print shop. I do see an option in the export PSD area which might also hide layers but I usually manually go through cycling down with my down arrow and hitting the delete button just to make sure I don't delete something I might also want to have included.

  2. I struck a letter on my keyboard accidentally and it seemed to change the view - perhaps it was the tab button. My effort to get back to the usual set up has been unsuccessful, the worst losing the dynamic info display for the selection size of a marquee or the crop tool, e.g. 250px width x 450 height, etc. The info panel doesn't have it (just X and Y coordinates) and that is in the sidebar. What I used to see was in the top area, perhaps by the tool bars. Looked at views and studio and all the panels appear to be checked to show.

There may be another problem associated with this. I've selected an area using the crop tool but the apply/cancel buttons are missing. I assume that some part of my tool bar/info bar is missing and I can't seem to get it back. The select box appears and I can drag the borders but there is no info showing above the dimensions, the options nor the buttons to apply.
