Menu Arrange ▸ Align Centre and Align Middle to center the background and Arrange ▸ Move back One to move the background below the drawing layer. I agree that the descriptions aren't very helpful.

Perhaps I have not grasped your aim, but would this work?
Load all your B/W images in a stack.
Set the mode to minimum (or darkest). This should show all the black lines.
Invert this composite to show white lines on a black background.
I don't have AP in front of me so I cannot give the specific details.

Macros can't load image yet
well actually they can , pretty cool
so just go to view > studio > macro
hit record and do your thing and then save that macro
then make a new batch job and apply that macro
