  1. Hi Mike,

Unless Affinity Photo RC4 isn't approved by Apple, this is the version that will be available at launch on the Mac App Store.

This however doesn't change the ongoing work on plug-in support, neither the inclusion of new functionality in the upcoming Photo (Consumer) Beta.

It's also possible that we release a minor point update to the Mac App Store version after Photo's release to fix some issues that may have slipped in this latest beta.

Thank you. I was not worried, only curious. The current version is so good and the developers have been so responsive that I remain quite sure everything will get done. I was just wondering.

  2. The plugin functionality is still not working properly in RC4 and, since there was nothing in the release notes concerning that, I assume it is scheduled for inclusion soon. But since RC4 is listed as a Gold Master I am also assuming that it will not be included in the release version as I assume that status means that all of the release functionality (except the Location Panel, for different reasons) is already in APB.

Is that correct? Or will there be an RC5 before launch? If so, will there be any new functionality? Or only fixes?

Is there an unofficial schedule for the plugin functionality that can be shared with us?

  3. Sorry, I can not find anything about the GPS information in AP?  Where can I find the „panel place/location”?

I had been reporting output exif problems, including the lack of gps information, when using the export functionality of APB and the developers finally seem to have solved and fixed the problems. My use Houdah to insert gps information into the images and then have been checking both the exif Panel (in the Photo Persona) and other software like LR to verify that the information is in the exported jpgs.

APB's release should contain a Location Panel for exif information display.

  4. Hi everyone,

I really don't want to argue against the creative freedom of adjustments Affinity photo gives you and in theory this freedom is definitely a huge advantage over preset ways to develop raw images, it's just that in my case of my camera the raw files start off really noisy and there is no way to correct that later on, you'll always loose detail in the process.

Sure I could use other programs for this process but that's not the point when collecting feedback to make a really good program better, right? I try another camera this afternoon to see if that is just a Canon raw specific or not.

    All the best for now

I will ask again if you would upload some actual raw and jpg images to a service like dropbox so people can download them and see what they can do. If you will do that people will make the adjustments and tell you what they did so you can get some other people's experiences and, perhaps, find out something about using APB in different ways than what you are now doing.

Without actual images to work on there is no way for people to see exactly what can or can not be done with your images.

  5.

Just checked my Color Management settings and all good there. Hopefully, the attached will come across sufficiently on this board for you to see what I'm talking about. All I did was call photoFXlab.

I just got back and will do some checking first thing in the morning (it was a long day driving back and I am a bit too tired to do it now), but I do see what you mean, based on the screen shots.

Some questions. If you pressed OK in photoFXlab to return the image back to APB, did it come back also a bit wonky? Or was it right. Also, if you did any adjusting using the plugins and pressed OK, did it come back wonky? Or was it OK?

I guess my real question is whether the image returned from photoFXLab was true to the original or true to the photoFXlab image.

  6. Hi,

thanks for the feedback. It's true that there was no noise reduction in the example since this really makes the image worse as far as the details are concerned. I attach two examples with noise reduction applied. Also as an addition the same raw file from capture one, none of the images has any adjustments done regarding detail.

For me, the Affinity Photo jpeg is much closer to the capture one raw edit.

The CaptureOne raw edit is an image that C1 loaded and adjusted. It has applied whatever adjustments were contained in the preset that was used by C1 for that image and that probably means that it has adjusted for noise, exposure, brightness, white and black points, sharpening and several other kinds of adjustments. In C1 you do not have to do that yourself as the preset takes care of it for you. With APB there are only basic adjustments applied to a raw image on purpose so you can adjust it as you wish.

If you will post the actual raw and jpg images for us to download and adjust in APB many of us can see how our adjusted images compare to both the jpg (which your camera adjusted) and the C1 image (which C1 adjusted). Bear in mind that both your camera and C1 have applied commonly used adjustments know to mimic the kinds of things viewers like to see. APB makes minimal adjustments so you can adjust it as you wish.

Remember also that you don't have to do your basic adjusting in APB. For example I almost always do my basic raw adjustments in either C1 or Optics Pro and use APB as an external editor to do specialized types of adjustments like layers, plugin usage, perspective and the like.

  7. sure, here are two examples. Hope this helps to see what I mean. It's the same image (taken in raw and jpeg) and adjusted similarly.

Sorry for the delay, but I just returned home from a camping trip.

When I suggested posting the images I meant both complete images, raw and jpg, so we could edit them ourselves to see if we can find the problem. I meant putting them in something like dropbox so we could then download them onto our computers rather than just posting screen shots. Can you do that?

  8. I'm using a Canon 450D, don't know if it is supported or not, but it doesn't strike me as being that exotic. Develop assistant is disabled. If it is enabled the image turn out much more overexposed than intended and really noisy. I add examples tomorrow, hope that they show what I mean.

Post some links to raw & jpg images we can download. Otherwise we will not be able to really understand exactly what is happening.

  9. I have not, but my use was more on the order of testing functionality than actual photo adjusting and perhaps I did not pay enough attention to the image quality. I found all of my plugins work through photoFXlab and posted that. Add to that the fact that most of my use of stuff like adjust and detail is in creating exaggerated images - very enhanced skies, eye popping greenery and the like so my images would not look "normal" anyway. I will do some testing when I get home from this camping trip in a day or two and let you know.

Did you try to adjust in photoFXlab using its adjustment controls before calling the plugins? Or after?

  10. Hi Mike,

Introducing any transparency (any at all - even a single value) will cause the message (as it is trying to save to JPG which doesn't do transparency).

The perspective tool can often introduce transparency - maybe it's this?

    Thanks,

    Andy.

    I am sure.

Perhaps it would be possible to include a checkbox on the perspective dialog box to flatten the image? That should solve the problem (I think).

  11. Bill,

I had also begun to wonder if the problem might be related to the fact that your earlier Aperture Libraries were created with OS X versions prior to Yosemite and perhaps there is some problem with their forward compatibility. I will check my system backups to see if I have any Aperture Libraries created before I installed Yosemite but it will have to wait until my wife and I get back from our camping trip we are starting on today.

  12. Andy:  10.10.3 here - and thanks for looking at this!   I'll keep exploring ...

    Mike:  Mesa to Edinburgh (airports)

Ah. Now I see. And sure. Just send me a ticket (well, I will need two because my wife will not be happy if I go to Edinburgh by myself).

Actually the Mesa airport (AZA) is largely freight with very few passenger flights and you can not really get a "through" flight from Mesa to much of anywhere because combined flights just don't seem to exist. I (we?) would have to fly from Phoenix and that airport code is PHX.

Business class would be nice ...

  13. As Bill already knows I know almost nothing about Aperture Libraries because I (a) don't use Aperture very much anymore and (b) usually delete the libraries after I do use it. But when I saw Bill's original post a week or two ago I created a new library and added several projects to it. I now have 6 projects in it and can see all of the Projects and each Project image thumbnails in the Media Browser. The projects are all single folders (as that is how I process my images) but I can see everything in them.

Admittedly they are small with no more than 125-150 images per project, but I can see them.

  14. Hi everyone,

I had overlooked RC2 and I just installed RC3; it did clear out the Recent items list and reset the few preferences that I had set (Map default region to North America). I must say that this beta version is the best so far; I have been looking mostly at the Develop Persona and its histogram tool. I am finding that the current beta makes this process much easier for me than its predecessors. Thank you Affinity team staff! Keep up the great work :D

I assume there is some reason that RC3 reset your settings but did not reset mine. Perhaps because I installed RC2?

In any case I agree with you. The new Develop Persona seems much much better, at least for me, and getting my raw photos right is now much easier.
