Thank you. One more question. Is the limit value in Preferences a "live" value? That is, if I change it while APB is running, will it take effect immediately? Or is it loaded at start time and thus would require a restart to take effect? Oh, and is there any way to determine how many history steps are active? Or would I have to count them?

I have been working on an image trying to remove a fence from in front of a building. This work involved using the Clone Tool and the Inpainting Tool a lot and I have had what must have been hundreds and hundreds of entries in the History List. After a couple of hours of this work the Clone Tool suddenly stopped working properly. That is, I would select an area as a source spot but when I tried to clone it I found APB was cloning from a previous source spot. After this repeatedly happening I saved the image (as a psd image without the history), reloaded it and was able to continue without any issue. Because of this experience I felt I needed to ask some questions about the history list. 1) Is there a limit on the size of the History List? If so, what is it? 2) If there is a limit, what happens when the History List limit is reached? Does the History List continue to add items, but remove them from the top of the list? Or does it just stop adding items? I know I could have checked, but did not think to do so at the time. 3) Is there any way to clear the History List? I could not find one and it seems counter-intuitive to remove items from the list but if there is a limit and if that limit prevents normal work beyond a certain point it might be helpful to be able to clear the History List?

There was an issue that I raised several months ago that if you crop an image (to remove something distracting) and then do InPainting next to where the cropped part was removed you still get the effect of the supposedly removed part of the image. The AP folks did not "fix" that problem (they said there were good reasons for keeping that supposedly removed material around) but gave me a workaround. They told me that after the crop I might want to explicitly rasterize (Layer -> Rasterize) the image forcing removal of the cropped away part of the image. That worked very well and it might also be a solution to your problem. After removing as much of your image as you can without having the stuff you want creep back into the image you might rasterize it and that might solve your problem. I have not tried that as I have not had your problem, but it might be worth a try ... And, of course, you can always back up to where the InPainting goes bad by using the history panel.

MEB: The open Panel problem appears to still exist in 1.3.5.3 although the cut-off bottom of the image issue appears to have been fixed.

It may be too late. This problem continued every time I right-clicked on an image and selected APB, so I rebooted and that seemed to have solved the problem. I can uninstall and reinstall the app to see if I can replicate it but, if you are not having any issue, it might be something specific to the state of my system and rebooting may have fixed the problem.

I downloaded and installed 1.3.5.3 and copied it over 1.3.5.2. When I first opened it I got the expected Verifying message. When that completed I got the expected "Are you sure you want to open it" message. When I responded with Open things proceeded as expected. I loaded a raw image, adjusted it and exported it as a jpg. I then right-clicked on the jpg and told it to open the image with APB (which I had not closed). I then got the same Verifying message and, after that, the same "Are you sure" message. When I responded to that APB did not open the image, but just sat there as though it had been started without an input image. I then went through the process two more times and got the exact same messages and still APB did not open the image. I then closed APB and again right-clicked on the image. Again, the same process of Verifying and "Are you sure", although this time it opened the image. I can not accomplish anything having to go through both of these messages. What is going on? UPDATE: I decided to see what happened if I did not try to open APB by right-clicking an image but instead just opened it. I (again) got the same two messages, loaded an image, saved it, closed APB and started it again. This time it opened without the two messages. I then closed it and again right-clicked an image and selected APB. Got the same two messages again. Next will try sending an image to it from a third party tool (CaptureOne).

However what I have found is that when I "slice" an object out using the InPainting tool (that is, I start removing a large object by removing "slices" one at a time, usually from the top, instead of trying to remove the entire object) AP seems to understand what I want to do and take from above. When I try to remove "slices" from the left or right it also seems to understand and use the correct background to remove the item. I do not know what algorithm is being used and how it determines what to use, but it generally seems to be smart enough to know what I want. > MikeFromMesa - I did try the cloning before in painting and that did often give more pleasing results. Thanks When things go awry with InPainting that is the process I use. It generally takes a bit more time (and more InPainting passes) but usually does what I need. Glad if it helped.

So may I assume that you will pass this along to be fixed and I do not need to file a regular bug report?

I use AP and APB primarily as an external editor for my workflow tool (CaptureOne) and was processing some images today when I noticed some strange behavior. I was processing jpgs in C1 and sent one of them to APB to do some additional editing. That editing involved using the HSL Adjust tool in the Adjustments Panel. When I finished editing the photo I saved it and closed it (Cmd-S and Cmd-W) sending the changed image back to C1 with the corrections and resetting the APB UI. When I sent a second image to APB from C1 it opened properly, but the HSL Panel entry, which had been closed after the Cmd-W, was open again. Here is the screen shot: You can see the HSL Panel is open and, if you look at the History Panel you can see that the image was just opened and nothing had been done. In particular I did not explicitly open the HSL Panel myself and, as I mentioned, it had been closed after the Cmd-W from the previous image. I had not closed APB between the two images being sent to APB. While this is not a serious issue, I do not remember seeing this happen in AP. I am not sure of the parameters of this problem (will it happen with tiffs? will it happen with raws? does it happen in AP?) and will do some additional research and post what I find, but I am relatively sure I have not seen this issue before 1.3.5.2.

I would guess that the larger the inpainted area the wider a selection is made to determine what will replace it. I know we have all seen that smaller areas yield consistently better results and if the area to be replaced is large I always try to use multiple small sections, inpainting each one until the whole area is fixed. One of the other processes I use is to clone the area to be removed using something like what I want to replace it. After that is done I then use the Inpainting tool to fix the cloned area. That often works very well and I have successfully removed entire large cars and people from an image in one of the US National Parks using a process like that - clone and then Inpaint.

I was wondering if the InPainting algorithm is determinative or not. That is, if someone paints the exact same area twice, will he/she get the exact same results? Or is the replacement randomized so even the same selection twice will yield different results?

I have noticed that I am having some very odd issues when exporting jpgs from APB, but these same problems do not occur when the image is exported from AP itself. For example, here is an image I took when testing a new lens for sharpness. I loaded the image into AP, changed to the Photo Persona and exported it using the correct image size (5796 x 3870) saved at 100% quality. I would file this as a bug (which I tend it think it is) but I have not seen this issue from anyone else. What is happening here? I have checked the image sizes and they are both the same. I have this result saving this image to a normal filesystem folder, to an external disk and to dropbox. All have the exact same issue.

Bill, It seems a bit odd as it works for some functionality and not for others. While I have not tried all of the brush functionality I have found that '[' and ']' do not work for the following on my machine: InPaining Brush Paint Mixer Brush Color Replacement Brush Dodge Brush Burn Brush Sponge Brush Clone Brush Blur Brush Erase Brush Undo Brush But it does work for the Selection Brush Most of those items for which it does not work are items I seldom, if ever, use, so I can not speak to its performance before that without opening AP and checking, but I know it used to work for some of those items (Dodge, Burn, InPainting).

That is a really nice photo. I downloaded it and did some InPainting in the bottom right corner. Perhaps you can be a bit clearer about exactly what the problem is? Or perhaps you can post the InPainted photo to show where the blue re-appeared? Or perhaps I am mistaken in my understanding? Where in Kansas, if I might ask? I used to live in Kansas myself, years ago. UPDATE: For some odd reason APB has been exporting images that are cut off at the bottom. The previous link contained that and I had to go back to AP to fix the problem. The above image seems OK to me.

I have tried changing the default shortcuts to something else but they still do not work so I assume this functionality is broken. I can file this as an official bug if you wish.

I have been using the latest APB, but only infrequently, and noticed today that the left and right bracket keys ([ and ]) no longer work to decrease and increase the size of the active brush. I was sure this worked before and I opened AP to verify that it is working there and it is. However it does not work in APB. My first thought was that it had something to do with the latest keyboard shortcut but I could not find the brush size adjustment in the keyboard shortcut listings. Has the [ and ] shortcuts been removed? Or changed? Or over-written by the keyboard shortcut file? Or something else? Or is this a bug?

Welcome to the community! Learning new editing software can always be a bit confusing and I know I had major issues when I started using Photoshop years ago. Personally I have found AP much easier to learn than PS but it can easily be confusing when you start. You can duplicate a layer in several ways. The easiest is to select the layer, right-click and select Duplicate from the context menu. You can also use Cmd-J (as shown in the context menu) or Layer -> Duplicate. Perhaps one way to easily learn how to do what you want is to look at the keyboard shortcut dialog box in the Preferences section. You can then see many of the simple options and assign your own shortcuts for them. This will give you a brief overview of what can be accessed via shortcuts and allow you to set the ones you find easiest. Hope this helps.

Is this for regular digital images? Or only for special drawing objects? I am asking because, when processing a raw image, I do not see any of this. Thanks. UPDATE: I have found what looks like the icon on the context menu for the Move tool but I do not see any dialog box that would control the rotation. Perhaps it is different for drawn images as compared to normal photo images?

OK. I know I am going to feel foolish for asking, but where is the Custom Rotation Center (Centre)? I have looked through all of the command pull-downs without finding it. I have looked through all of the Studio Panels and did not find it. I tried the rotation commands thinking a new dialog might show up, but could not find it. I tried the Transform Panel, with no luck. I tried the help section but found no listing. I tried the crop tool thinking that since you could rotate using the crop tool, perhaps it was there. But it wasn't. I tried the filters, but could not find it (OK. But I was getting desperate by this point). Is there some magic incantation you have to mutter first? Where is it?

I had assumed that the exif code was being handled by the app as xml as that is what it is. That would mean that adding extra exif information only required adding more xml nodes at the end of the current child list and that would not require shoving anything anywhere. Are you saying that the information is being stored as a series of string variables and that there are 21 extra lines left open in case more need to be added? I am sorry, but that sounds to me like a really odd engineering approach. Of course it is not my business as I am not part of the staff.

I can confirm Billtils observation. If one opens an image, opens and adjusts the Haze Removal filter but does not hit the Apply button and then goes to another adjustment (I used the HSL adjustment APB crashes. This appears to be repeatable. Thank you Bill for finding this.

Based on Billtils posts I went back and loaded the image I used to test the Haze Removal filter. While I was not able to reproduce a crash (yet) I have seen very strange results if the Haze Removal is not the first used filter. Screen Shot 1 - loaded a raw image, changed to the Photo Persona and applied the Haze Removal filter. Screen Shot 2 - loaded the same raw image, changed to the Photo Persona, cropped and leveled the image, made a small Curves adjustment (darkening the image a bit), reselected the background layer and then did about the same Haze Removal change. Clearly there is something wrong going on here.
