Crionis got a reaction from Aammppaa in Layers panel improvements
Although it is mostly ok, the layers panel could use much improvement overall. Here are a few things I'd be happy to see:
Global lock/unlock for objects. Individual solo/un-solo for objects. The current alt+click on a thumbnail just doesn't cut it, as it's not robust enough. It simply turns off when clicking away. This significantly limits the potential this feature could offer. Ability to make the list more condensed, so that more items can be visible at once. A larger thumbnail pop-up preview when hovered over the smaller thumbnail next to the object in the layers panel (this would help when making the list more condensed) Overall performance. To me, on my relatively powerful Windows machine, it feels a bit sluggish. Nothing too serious, but still feels like there's a lag whenever the layer has been moved or a when a group is being expanded. It's not exactly snappy compared to other software I've used. You guys are doing a great work so far! Can't wait to see more of the future updates! From what I've seen so far, it can only get better.

Crionis got a reaction from oskar in Return to Move tool when esc is hit twice
By hitting escape twice, I'd like to return to the Move tool no matter which another tool I currently have activated. This can be a nice reset shortcut that gets you back to the default selection state. Right now, escape only unselects the object, and that's great. But hitting esc the second time could be used to go even further back and get you back to the Move tool.

I haven't seen it done in any other application, and I understand that some people may not actually like this idea, and I don't see it as crucial or anything. More like a nice workflow addition. Having an option in settings would probably do the trick.

Crionis got a reaction from BatteriesInc in Exclude "clear selection" from history
So here's the thing... Sometimes when I try to change the color of an object, I want to see how it looks and decide if I want to keep it. What I realized is that certain seemingly meaningless actions can have irreversible consequences. Here I'll try to explain why in detail.

Let's assume that I have drawn a red line somewhere in the design, like this:

Next, let's assume that I have changed it to green. Once I did that, I end up with a green line, outlined with a blue selector.

Since I can't see it very well because of the blue selectors around it, I will naturally want to click away to unselect it (clear selection), so that I can see clearly:

Next, let's assume that I'm not sure about this green, and want to see how the initial red looked like, just to quickly compare. I will simply click "undo", and will have to do it twice in order to get to the state where the line was still red.

Now, because I can't really see the line very well, I will instinctively deselect it again.

So OK, I compared the two lines, and now I'm sure that I can go back to the green, because I realized that that one was definitely better.. but....

Ouch.. what happened? No redo. I can't go back to it.. And sometimes, I can't even remember what the color was!
Now imagine this happening on a much greater scale. Sometimes I travel 50 or so undo states back just to see what it looked like, only to realized it wasn't good enough and then return to the original position, at the end of "history". It somewhat scares me that a single seemingly irrelevant action can destroy everything.

Also, in this example, of course you can clearly see the color, and of course you can easily remember what color you had. But imagine if this was a full blown design, and you just had to unselect that blue thing in order to see the whole picture. Also, here I had the whole thing zoomed in. When viewed at 100% you can't even see the color of the line. You will more than likely want to unselect it to see what it looks like.

My suggestion would be to completely remove the "clear selection state" from the history records... It doesn't serve any logical purpose anyway. Let me know what you think!

    Now I am :)

But regardless, it's still too risky to have this thing in there. One wrong click and you lose everything.

    Hi Crionis,

This isn't currently possible in Affinity Designer, it's something that has been requested previously and may be included in a future update.

Ah sorry, what I initially thought is that there is a separate set of those buttons that works like "alt+click" by default. I think it would be great to have such set available.. or to have an option to turn this on by default for the current set.

Yes, it would be good to have an option for this. Coming to Affinity Designer from Serif DrawPlus, I was surprised at first to find that there was no 'Break Apart' command to undo what 'Combine' does, and it was quite a while before I discovered how to perform non-destructive Boolean operations.

    Nice!!!

Does that mean it features a copy/paste style shortcut too? Cause i tend to use that much more than defining styles when designing.
