Publisher 1.7.0.238. It would be useful to a lot of users if the "Special characters and glyphs" page of the Help could give: * what each character looks like (if possible); * a short explanation of what it does, or what it can/should be used for; * a good visual example of where it has been used. Some characters are fairly self-explanatory - "Page Number", "Copyright", etc. - but some, such as (but not limited to) "Soft Hyphen", "Sixth Space", "Zero-Width Non-Joiner" and "Punctuation Space" are meaningless to people without a good DTP/printing background. I'm sure there are lots of explanations around the web but it would be nice if users didn't have to search for them. Obviously the Help isn't finished yet, but it would be a shame if this sort of useful information was omitted.

Can't update 1.7.0 on Windows 10
GarryP replied to Annie_62's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on Windows threads
It might be easier for people to help if you give some idea of exactly what's happening when you try to install. Where did you download the software from? What installation process do you use? Do you get any windows appearing - even for just a moment? What do the windows say - if you can see anything? Which buttons do you press, if any? What messages pop up? etc. etc. -
All done in Publisher (+AD+AP)
GarryP replied to sfillibeck's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
You're welcome @sfillibeck I get lots of help from the experts in this forum so it's nice to be able to put something back into the community, even in such a small way. I will be interested in seeing a more refined version of the document. -

Nice work. I have some comments, if that's okay... * I can't see the gears on the front page - either the 2D or 3D ones - "running smoothly". Some of them look like they would grind and others aren't connected. But don't feel too bad about this, the UK Mint produced coins with similar issues a while back; * I don't think you need to use the "Page" word in the page numbers, pretty much everyone knows what they are; * I like the 'gold' colour, very smart and professional; * Pages 2, 3, maybe 5&6, 10, 11, 15, maybe 17&18, 20 and probably 21&22 don't need a page number; * On the pages where you have a horizontal split between text and image, the text looks a bit too near the images to me; * The steps on the image on page 2 make the text more difficult to read; * The overall typeface choice looks good to me, especially the good clear body text; * The box behind the text on page 2 is too big, the padding inside is too big, and the 'gap' at the bottom of the text is too big; * The image on pages 7&8 is a bit too 'busy', there's a bit too much going on; * I've noticed quite a few grammar/wording issues that would cause problems with an English audience, but that might not matter to you; * The text over the image on page 17 isn't very clear, it's not immediately clear that it's not part of the image like the other text; * The back page is a bit bare, maybe put a lightened and blurred image as background (you're paying to have it printed so you might as well have something on it) All-in-all though, a nice draft document. Some issues that need a bit of thought/fixing but a good start. P.S. You might get more replies to this if you put it in the Showcase section instead of a discussion section. -
Very nice work. Great art style with tons of detail. It looks like he(?)'s worked very hard for that crystal/jewel so well done him too.

Welcome to the forum. Excellent work. I would recommend that viewers click on the image and zoom in to see the detail that's been added to this; the small version here really doesn't do it justice. P.S. One tiny issue I have is that the 'necklace' of the bottom one doesn't seem finished to the same degree as the rest of the illustration, but that's a very minor concern and shouldn't distract from the rest of it.

I agree with Matt, very nice work that looks like the real thing (to me at least, there's not much artistic graffiti where I live, mainly just black scrawls). I'm reading the word "gamer" from it, but that might not have been your intention.

affinity designer My logo idea for container warehouse
GarryP replied to Daviddesign's topic in Share your work
I agree with Wosven, the first one has better reproducibility at different sizes and the typeface gives an impression of 'solidity'. The second one is too detailed and the typeface doesn't look right to me. Nice graphics, just not right for a logo. The third one is nice but isn't great at smaller sizes. One small issue I have with the first one is that it looks like the containers have fallen over, maybe there was bad weather at sea. That may not be the image the company wants to give out. Also, on a related note, have you thought about a black and white or grey-scale version of the logo? What does it look like when the colour has been removed? Does the logo still 'work' when there's no colour? All-in-all though, some nice ideas there.- 2 replies

Windows 10 Home 1809, Designer 1.7.0.231. I've just noticed the following problem: * Open Designer on my main monitor, basic HD, nothing fancy (scale at 100%); * Create a new document and put a 2 inch square on it; * Zoom to 100%; * Measure square, it's 2 inches square - as expected; * Move Designer window to laptop display, basic HD, just whatever came built-in (scale 125%); * Measure square, it's now close to 1 and 6/8ths of an inch square - not great, but easily fixed; * Zoom to 100%; * Measure square, it's 2 inches square again - as expected; * Move Designer window back to main monitor; * Measure square, it's now just under 2 and a half inches square - but we should be able to fix that; * Zoom to 100% and... oh dear, that's wrong; * Measure square, it's now just under 3 and 1/8ths of an inch - some thing has gone wrong somewhere. And no amount of re-zooming, minimising the application, or anything else I have tried will fix it, it stays looking too big until I re-launch the application. Just saving the document, closing it, and then re-loading it doesn't fix the problem, I've got to bounce Designer entirely. Designer is set to use the built-in - default - Intel GPU.

I don't think I'm using the search correctly, or it's not working. In the text below, "<" and ">" are used to show the extent of the text used and are not actually entered. When I type <zoom 100%> into the search bar I get 9,711 results. If I click on the <zoom AND 100%> suggestion below the search bar, I only get 797 results - which seems right - but the search bar still says <zoom 100%>. However, when I manually enter <zoom AND 100%> into the search bar I get 193, 899 results, probably because it is including the word "AND" in the search. This doesn't sound right to me. Can I not use "AND" or "OR" manually without relying on the suggested links?

Windows 10 Home 1809, Designer 1.7.0.231. I've noticed some very strange/unexpected behaviour when using the Customise Tools function (this happens in Publisher too). See first attached GIF where dragging a tool can cause it to sometimes: * snap back to where it was; * snap to a weird position nowhere near where I dropped it; * snap to the bottom of the tools. See second attached GIF where dragging a separator can cause all kinds of weird issues such as: * other separators going missing; * the tools 'avoid' the dragged tool in unexpected ways; * basically all kinds of weirdness that's difficult to describe, just watch the GIF and see how many issues you can spot (it gets a little bit more controllable by the end).

Windows 10 Home 1809, Publisher 1.7.0.227. Today I opened a document that I had been playing around with for a few days and noticed that it had opened with a [Read Only] suffix on the file name. I've had a look around on the forum and a few people have had similar - mostly one-off - issues, and with Designer and Photo too. I didn't notice any message about this when I saved the document before it went to Read Only. Publisher hadn't crashed while I've been using the document. There are no external images or anything like that in the document. There's no message when I open the document, it just opens with a [Read Only] suffix on the file name. The document was created with build 227 and it's been sitting on my local drive since then in my Desktop and then Documents folders (so no weird security issues there, I hope). However, when I closed Publisher, launched it again, and went to open the document I got a message saying that there was a recovery document available for it (which had never happened on opening the document before). I told Publisher that I didn't want to open the recovery document and the original document loaded, now without the Read Only status. Could this - a recovery document being available - be part of the reason why people's documents sometimes get a Read Only status?

fde101: That's a nice way of looking at the situation; I'll have to try it in future projects. Seneca: Ah... dragging... that did the trick, thanks very much. Now I'm wondering why there's a difference applying masters to masters, but I don't really need to know the answer to that. Anyway, cheers. Joachim_L: If I've read it correctly, what you're getting sounds right to me from what I've read above. With a spread, your fourth page will be on the left so the margin on the left of that page should be the outer margin of 15 and the margin on the right should be the inner margin of 30. The outer margin will always be on the left of a left-hand page and on the right of a right-hand page. You are not setting a left/right margin, you are setting an inner/outer margin, with the assumption that you are working on a spread and not individual pages. (I think this is part of the answer to my original question.)

Thanks v_kyr, I'll have to read that properly and do some experimentation when I get a chance. I don't know how often Google trawls the forum so it might not pick up recent stuff, such as the posts that come in when a new beta is released, but your instructions definitely add to what I already knew.

I've had a look on the Invision website and can only find this: https://invisioncommunity.com/4guides/how-to-use-ips-community-suite/content-discovery/searching-your-community-r70/ which isn't much use. It would be nice to have some instructions on how to search for, for example: * All posts where the body contains both the words "first" and "second" but not "third"; * All posts where the body contains "first" but not either "second" or "third"; * All posts that have "first second" - in that order, next to each other - and also "third" anywhere else in the post; * All posts that have "first second" - in that order, next to each other - but not where "third" is anywhere else in the post * All posts that have "first" in the title but not "second" in the body; * All posts that have "first" in the title and "second" or "third" in the body; etc. etc. etc. (The example words are just 'place-holders' and not actual search terms.) Obviously there are many different ways people want to search but if we had some instructions on what sort of thing we can do then it might make it easier for us to find things (and perhaps not report duplicate problems/issues).

Windows 10 Home 1809, Publisher 1.7.0.227. There is a little "Toggle Master View" button on the status bar - to the right of the "Last Spread" button - which seems to toggle between the page/spread currently being edited and the last master page/spread that was edited. Is this the expected behaviour of this button and, if so, is this the full extent of its behaviour or does it also do something else? With the introduction of the new master page editing functions - Edit Linked etc. - it seems a little bit redundant. Also, if you are editing a page/spread that doesn't use the last master page/spread that was edited then its function is fairly irrelevant as you will toggle between two unrelated things. I only ask as I can't find anything in the Help about it, so I just wondered.

It's not a hunch, I tried doing it a few times and couldn't get it to work. Whenever I select a master spread I can only select the whole master spread - not a half/page of it - and I can only apply another whole master spread to that master spread. The "Apply Master" context menu item only gives me a small dialog allowing me to select the master without any reference to which part of it. Are you sure you're applying one side of a master spread to another master spread or are you applying one half of a master spread to a page? I can do the latter, it's the former I can't do.

Windows 10 Home 1809, Publisher 1.7.0.227. The Navigator studio has some - undocumented, as far as I can tell - presets (little bars under the slider) that you can click on to quickly change the zoom level but they need pixel-perfect clicking to be able to use them. At present, the mouse pointer has to be exactly on the tiny one/two-pixel-wide bar. I think it would be better if there was a leeway of, say, three/four pixels to either side, or the bar could be made thicker with a correspondingly larger 'hitbox'.

Hot Key Panning
GarryP replied to tschotsch's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
Yeah, that's absolutely fine. Just thought I'd give some other existing options in case anyone might like to know about them. Personally I don't use the Navigator much but I probably should get to know it better myself. -
Hot Key Panning
GarryP replied to tschotsch's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
This doesn't get you to where you want to be, but you can use the Navigator studio - Advanced settings - to create View Points which you can quickly switch between, with short-cut keys too if you want to use them. It's probably more useful in Designer than Publisher - the View Points are fixed to a single page/spread rather than being 'relative' across all pages/spreads - but I think it's a function worth knowing about. P.S. You can also use the Navigator for panning. Might be useful for what you need to do. -
Where have the Gutter settings for grids gone?
GarryP replied to GarryP's topic in [ARCHIVE] Designer beta on Windows threads
Ah, I see, that's very useful, thanks. (I notice that the document has to have Pixels as the Document Units before you can access the Pixel-based Presets - as defined in the "Manage Presets" dialog - but that's fairly obvious once you think about it.) -
My use case, in this particular instance, is very basic: Applying page numbers to either (a) only the left-hand page, (b) only the right-hand page, or (c) both pages - where having no page numbers means simply not applying the master page at all. I can do what I want using the technique I mentioned above so I'll go along with that until/unless I find a problem. P.S. You can't apply only one side of a master page spread to another master page spread so that could cause a problem in the future, but that's probably something for another time.

I was hoping that there was a way of setting the chirality of a single master page without having to manually swap margin sizes around but it doesn't look like that's an option. I've been able to get what I want by using a facing master page/spread and then applying all of it to spreads where the full master is needed or only applying it to one half of the spread where I only need one half of the master and it looks fine, so far. Perhaps I'll find situations where it's more useful to do it this way. I will keep going like this unless I have problems or someone gives me a better way. This then leads me to a related question which I've already briefly mentioned above: If I have multiple master pages applied to a page/spread (each with their own margins), which margins should I see - or be able to use - on the page/spread? A little bit of experimenting shows that (as far as I can tell) the displayed margins - those that can be snapped to and, therefore, the only usable ones - are always those in the master page which is at the bottom of the layer stack, I.e. the layer that is 'farthest away' from the layers above it. If this is by intentional design then that's fine and I can live with that, but it needs to be documented so users know what's happening and why. I can imagine conditions under which it would be confusing - or create problems - but if it's how things should be then there's probably nothing we can do about it.
