  1. My concern is about where the control is situated.
    It allows the formatting of something that is two 'levels' above the context of the Character panel - those 'levels' being (as I see them): Character; Paragraph; Table Cell; Table Frame; (whatever the table frame is in, if anything); Document.
    Being able to alter the formatting of a Table Cell via the Character panel is analogous to being able to alter the margins of the Document via the Table panel. It just doesn't seem right to me.
    I think it would be a shame if something like this set a precedent for the future of the UI.
    I think we should be using the Table panel for formatting the table/cells and the Character panel for formatting characters. Having functionality 'leaking' over like this could lead to some major confusion further along the road. Better to keep things simple, at the start at least.

  2. This would be nice if we could have it but, since it doesn't look like it will be a first-release item, that's fine - I can live without it.
    (I should have said that the document is printed, so hyperlinks aren't useful in this case.)
    The TOC and index can already create a numerical page reference to a piece of text so extending that functionality to something more general could be something that comes in 1.8... perhaps.
    Anyway, now I know it isn't possible yet I can just continue doing what I was already doing. Thanks.

  3. I think it's worth noting that if you add dummy rows/columns to provide the transparent spacing then you may have difficulty in getting the table the right size if you need the spacing to be of a particular size. A lot of manual calculation may be needed to set-up the table just the way you need it and re-calculation may be needed if the table has to change. Also, since you can't lock the size of rows/columns - as far as I have been able to ascertain - resizing the entire table will also change the width/height of the spacing columns/rows.

  4. I have some text where, at the moment, it reads something like this:
    "If you would like more information on this, turn to page ## to see full details."
    Once the document is pretty much complete I then go through the whole thing searching for ## and manually insert the real page number. Not a massive task for what I need to do, but still a bit of a chore and things can get overlooked.
    Does Publisher have an "Insert the page number of this selected layer at this position in the text" function?

    I've had a look in the Help but I can't see anything relevant.

    P.S. The page number must automatically update if the page number of the layer changes, otherwise the result would be worse than manually searching for ##.

  5. If I have correctly understood how the Affinity range will work once the 1.7 versions have their full commercial release, this shouldn't be a problem.
    You would simply switch to whichever persona provided the functionality you wanted to use - Designer, Publisher or Photo - without needing to copy/paste or move the document between applications.
    For example, if you want to use the text frame functionality you switch to the Publisher persona, or if you want construction objects or isometric drawing tools you switch to the Designer persona. Just switch to the persona that does the job you want to do.
    It should be as seamless as switching personas in the 1.6.x versions but you 'switch applications' instead.

  6. Windows 10 Home 1809, Publisher 1.7.0.257.

    I'm not sure if this is a feature or a bug so I'll ask the question.
    When I have a cell or a number of cells in a table selected, I can change the border - of whichever border-selection is currently selected in the Table panel - of those cells via the Decorations tab of the Character panel.
    Is this something that was deliberate?
    It's a kind-of-nice short-cut if I don't have the Tables panel open - even though I can't choose which border selection I want from the Character panel - but I don't know if having it at the Character level is appropriate.
    I'm not sure where would be a better place, it just seems a bit odd.

    The attached GIF shows what's happening better than I can explain it.
    Basically, selecting some cells from the bottom table actually selects some cells in the upper table, sometimes.
    Same document that I attached to this post: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/80965-spacing-between-table-cells-in-affinity-publisher/&tab=comments#comment-426146

  8. I know of two ways to do this but neither is particularly nice.

    The first is to use a decoration on the table cell paragraphs instead of using a fill. Make the decoration as big as you would want the fill to be and position it manually in the middle of the cell. It's quick and dirty and you don't have much control but it works up to a point. If you change the height of the cells then you will have to change the height of the decorations.

    The second is to use two copies of the table, one with the text and fill and one with the outlines (of any colour). Put both tables in another layer and set the blend mode of the table with the outlines (it should be above the other table) to "Erase". You can then resize the combined layer to resize both tables but if you need to make changes to one table then you will have to make the changes to both tables.

    See the attached document where the layer "Decorations" uses the first technique and the combined layer "Combined Tables" uses the second.
    Like I said, neither is a particularly great solution but they will probably do close to what you want until a real solution can be found.

    P.S. The large size of the document is only becuase of the texture used as a background.

  9. You're welcome.
    The first spread being very light might not be an actual problem. It just depends on what it's going to be used for.
    I still don't understand what the time column is for - the numbers from 1 to 36 don't match any use I can think of, maybe I'm not thinking along the right lines - but that doesn't matter as long as it's right for what you want.
    Similarly, I don't understand the AM/PM usage with the numbers in the time column but my confusion may be totally irrelevant. If it's right for what you want then it's right.
    I don't think a table cell can be given a background that is anything other than a plain rectangle at the moment.
    Controlling the sizes of cells isn't very sophisticated at the moment so if you need more control over how things look I would recommend using separate items. I've attached my version of one of your spreads so you can see what I did in different areas to do different things.
    In particular, have a look at how I have constructed the "Habits" section. Using multiple grids makes it much easier to resize columns and rows without affecting the rest of the section, see attached GIF. (I'm still learning this too so it may not be the best way of doing it.)
    I hope this helps.

  10. That's a great start.
    I have a few comments (apologies in advance if I have misinterpreted anything).
    First spread:
    * It's a bit too light overall for me - I don't know if that's on purpose but it's difficult to read.
    Second spread:
    * "Apportment" should be spelled "Appointments";
    * "Projet" should be spelled "Project";
    * "To Be Done" is usually called - in the UK at least - "To Do", but that's not really important;
    * What does the numeric value in the "Time" column represent?
    * What are the AM/PM columns for?
    Third spread:
    * My personal favourite - it has a nice 'breezy' look;
    * I'm glad to see that the spaces for Saturday and Sunday are no smaller than the spaces for other days - not everyone has weekends off with nothing to do;
    * Is it just me or is the space for Wednesday bigger than the space for other days?
    * The spacing for the right-hand rows could be a little more regular;
    * You could extend the underline where year is to be written for people who like to write the year in full, e.g. 2019 instead of 19.
    Fourth spread:
    * The spaces for writing the date aren't very big compared to the size of the text;
    * The 'header bars' aren't all the same height;
    * What sort of information do you expect people to put in the boxes in the 'header bars'? You could write that in feint text to give people a hint.
    General notes:
    * Have you tried printing these out at 100% and writing in the boxes yourself? I have often found that it's difficult to write stuff in many of these things neatly as the boxes can be too small to be useful.

    Anyway, apart from those little issues, they're looking good so far.

  11. Nice work. Thanks for sharing.
    Do I hear the sound of light cycles revving up?
    There are a few small issues that I think might need some attention - if I was being very picky -  but it looks great.
    Maybe one (or more) of the illustration experts on the forum can give some tips that we can all learn from.

  12. Thanks dominik.
    I found the same page myself, and it looks interesting.
    A post that I found by Patrick Connor said that Publisher was using "perl type (or ‘ECMAScript with perl extensions’) regular expressions", but I don't know if they are the same as what is discussed on the page we both found. He also said the search "will be performed using the "C" or "POSIX" locale" but I have no idea what that means.
    Either way, unfortunately, I don't think this is going to help me. (I only started using this because it was suggested to me as a possible way to figure out the original issue I was having.)
    This issue isn't a massive problem for me with this document as it's only a basic newsletter, but I imagine it could be a major headache for someone with a large and complicated publication. I can just ignore it - if the odd letter isn't in the right font (the replacement is quite similar) then I don't really care - but they might not be able to do that.

    Mike: Thanks for posting a link to that site. That looks like it will be very useful. Bookmarked for future reference.

  13. I've just done a search for (without the quotes) ".", ".*", "?", ".?" with the specified font and got nothing either with a "Normal" search or a "Regular Expression" search.
    I don't use regular expressions much myself so I'm no expert and there's nothing I can find in the Help to tell me about how to use them.

    William: You could be right about Publisher remembering I was using the font - for some reason - but I don't know how to see where it thinks I might still be using it.

  14. Note: Choosing menu "Text -> Find" seems to bring up the same panel as menu "View -> Studio -> Find and Replace".
    I tried to search by using various format options - including formats that I know are used in the document - and got nothing back in the results.
    However, I notice that the Help states that "You can further refine your search or replacement behaviour by selecting additional options" (my emphasis) - including "Format", which tells me, if I have interpreted it correctly, that the Format settings might only apply to the Find function if you have already supplied some text to search for. This seems quite reasonable but it doesn't help with this issue.
    P.S. It might be useful if the results box showed something like <You must supply some text to search for> rather than <No results found> when search text has not been given. This would make it easier to see what's going on as <No results found> sounds like a search has been made even when no text has been searched for.

  15. What about when you don't know that you might need a text frame when you start off?
    You create some artistic text but then much later on think, "Ah, I wish I'd made this a text frame instead".
    This isn't just for moving from one app to another, the same issue can be evident in the same app - I've done it a few times myself and will probably do it again in the future.
