  1. Designer 2.3.1 on Windows 10.

This vector shape in my attached document looks quite simple but the Contour Tool seems to have some issues with it – see attached video.

As far as I can tell, it doesn’t have any weird ‘double-nodes’ or anything like that.

It was taken (copy/paste vectors) from a placed SVG, and flipped horizontally, but I can’t remember where I got the SVG from (the filename is “Man-Head-Silhouette.svg” if that helps at all).

I’m posting this as feedback, rather than a bug, just so that the developers can look at it and see if they can do anything about it.

  2. The word “texture” can mean many different things to many different people.

Can you give us a visual example of what you have so far?
And can you give us a visual example of what you are trying to achieve?

If not, can you give us more details about what you are trying to do, the more details the better?

  3. The perspective lines should be easy, just create a row of vertical lines, select all the lines together, switch to the Node Tool, select all of the top nodes, set Transform Mode and resize the selection – see attached video.

For the face you should be able to repeatedly use the Contour Tool, just make sure that you make a duplicate of the original before using the tool on the duplicate each time.

    Many thanks

    You’re welcome.

In most cases I would not recommend copying some layers from the ‘sick’ document to a new one, to try and save some time/effort, in case they ‘infect’ the new document somehow.

You could try exporting some of the vector-only layers to SVGs (in essence, trying to ‘disinfect’ them), then placing the SVGs, one-by-one, into the document and then copying/pasting the contents of the placed SVG into the document and deleting the placed SVG, but that could be a long process with no guarantee of eventual success.

Sounds like I need to start from scratch again

Unfortunately it looks like that might be a possibility in this case.

Every now and again – thankfully not very often –  we see a document that has just ‘gone screwy’ for some reason or other.

Sometimes the developers are able to fix it but the process to do so can often take longer than it would take to reproduce the document.

Hopefully Hangman’s experimentation will reveal something ‘concrete’ that someone can do something with.

  6. I’ve tried everything that I can think of – Text sizes, Font choices, Blend Options, various Opacities, Character Scaling, Baselines, View Modes, etc. etc. - but can’t seem to be able to get the text to show.

I can add a new Curve Path Text layer in that document, and that looks fine, but I notice that the application is working really slowly while I have the example document open.

I think the document might have become ‘corrupted’ somehow.

  7. If you go to the Export Persona, delete the existing Slice for that Artboard, go to the Layers Panel and recreate the Slice, the size of the Slice will be 836×176 with an 8px ‘border’ around the layer.

Deleting all of the layers inside the banner layer puts the Slice size back to 820×160, so that gives me the idea that one (or more) of the layers in the banner is what could be causing the problem.

I don’t have the time to go through each layer (and children) to find out what the problem layer actually is but I think it might have something to do with blurring as that rings a bell, but I can’t be sure about that.

I think the best you can do is keep deleting layers, one-by-one, until things are fixed in the Export Persona and then work from there to figure out what is causing the problem.

  8. Confirmed while using the Font Picker on the Context Toolbar in Designer 2.3.1.

Home key – Go to start of list – Correct
End key – Go to end of list – Correct
Page Down key – Go to next page – Correct
Page Up key – Go to start of list – Unexpected

Same result obtained using different Page Up key.

Same result obtained while using the Font Picker in the Character Panel.

Same results obtained in Publisher 2.3.1.

Not getting the same result in Publisher when using the drop-down in the Edit Text Style dialog.

  9. Is that a question about keyboard shortcuts, or a feature request for more shortcuts, or just a statement about the existing shortcuts?

Because InDesign and Publisher have different ways of working, and have different feature sets, there will probably always be certain shortcuts in one which don’t (and may never have) have an equivalent in the other.

If you can be a bit more specific about what you are wanting/suggesting/asking then we can probably help further.

  10. Welcome to the forums @impactpl

Can you tell us why you are using images like these and not better ones?

My first suggestion would be to ask whoever you got the images from to supply you with proper screenshots instead of photos of a monitor. (Maybe they don’t know that screenshots are possible and just need to be told how to get them.)

If they can’t do that, or are refusing to, is it possible for you to get the screenshots yourself from whatever application or website the photos were taken of?

If that’s not possible then you might find it quicker to make mock-ups rather than trying to fix those images.

I am working on Designer 2 and I need to use the perspective tool for a photo that I need to deform.

In addition to Walt’s advice above, I think it’s also worth noting that (in V2) the Live Perspective Filter is also available in Designer’s Pixel Persona via menu “Layer → New Live Filter Layer → Perspective...”, so maybe no need to switch to Photo in this particular case.

  12. The Slice Tool can snap to other slices, so once you have the first slice done you should be able to create the others reasonably quickly, with a bit of manual work getting the heights right.

I thought I understood what you were wanting to do, but I could have been wrong and don’t want to take you down the wrong road.

Can you explain what you mean by “troublesome” and “capture my slices”?

I’ve attached a video of how I would divide an image (into 200 pixel width slices), to show what I thought you wanted to do (except you are working ‘rotated’ by 90 degrees to my example).

  13. This was requested in 2018 (and maybe earlier):
    https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/71653-export-persona-slicing-snapping-using-guides/#comment-372047

See here for an explanation, from 2022, as to why it might not happen:
    https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/117396-slices-doesnt-snap-on-guides/&do=findComment&comment=646590

Basically, as I have interpreted the reason, the Export Persona uses pixels and, because guides can be set to non-integer-pixel positions (e.g. 12.5mm), the Export Persona cannot use/snap-to the guides.

  14. If the Drop Caps formatting was ON I would have expected the Style Settings to say “… + Drop cap: On …”, rather than “… Character fill ...”.

If the fix has worked for you then that’s great, but I’m still wondering where the problem came from originally.

I can’t seem to find “Character fill” anywhere in the Edit Text Style dialog, Character Panel, Paragraph Panel or the Help, so I’m curious as to how it got there.

  15. You’re welcome.

I don’t have VectorStyler so I can’t repeat that workflow but I guess it might depend on how VectorStyler internally handles ellipses.

If it handles them differently to the Affinity applications – e.g. single curve surrounding two focal points, instead of multiple bezier curves –  then that could account for the difference. (I’m fairly sure that this has been discussed elsewhere in the forums, probably a number of times.)

As you say, the difference is usually so small that it doesn’t matter for illustration purposes and, in my opinion, if someone really needs to do precision drawing then they should probably be using CAD software rather than illustration software (although, of course, that doesn’t mean that the illustration software cannot be improved in the future to be as precise as CAD, in this area at least).
