  1. When I used to use Illustrator way back, i recall there was a "scissors tool" that let you cut say a line into two parts, where one object would become two objects.

I see a crop tool but not a scissors tool in affinity designer.

How can I do this (simulate the sissors tool)in affinity designer?

Use cutting a vector line into two parts as a demo simple example.

  2. I made a .afdesign file that has several  tiff images imported in a 4 quadrant pattern with a plain white background behind the imported tiff images.

When I export it as a tiff file everything still looks good ( the background is still white)!

BUT... if I export it a .svg file, the background is an unwanted fine checkered board pattern in stead of white .

I prefer to have the .svg file but not with the checkered board background.

    1. What can I do to the original .afdesign file to keep the background white after I export it as a .svg file?

    Thanks

  3. I purchased affinity photo on line.

It said "your order has been succssfully completed"

It also gave me a purchase ordernumber  ending in:   *******88W .

    dated jan 8 2019.

But so far the download has not appeared in my download folder on my Mac.

How do I contact someone at affinity to send me the .dmg down load for the mac OS?

  4. thanks for reply!!

i had a little problem finding the transform panel, mainly because it is labeled "xfm" when not active.

Then it turns into "transform" when you click on it.

Second, unless you gave the guidance , i never would have figured out that in place of "in."  as the size of W and H,

the user could type in a percentage as the size change as long as he uses the % symbol.

  5. Hello Out there

How to specify a specific proportional percent change in object size.

As a simple example, say I construct a simple rectangle with the rectangle tool.

The resulting rectangle will appear to have handles.

I can squeeze down these  handles  at a 45 deg angle to get a proportionally changed new rectangle.

INSTEAD OF DOING THIS, is there a direct tool of some sort (like in say illustrator), where I can simply specify the desired percent change in the rectangle?

In fact a more advanced version would allow the user to specify different percentages in the vertical and horizontal directions.

  6. Thanks to those who replied!

But neither answer was what i am looking for.

I used the circle  only as an example of erasing, so the PIE tool won't apply to other shapes.

Also I want to have it explained for AP not AD.

I am looking for an answer to my two questions that i will repeat:

    FROM AP HELP

    ------------------start help ---------

    1. From the Layers panel, select a pixel layer.
    2. From the Tools panel, select the Erase Brush Tool.
    3. From the Brushes panel, select a brush of your choice.
    4. Adjust the context toolbar settings.
    5. Drag on the page in the direction that you want the erase brush stroke to follow.

    ----------------------------------------  end help ------------

*** Basic question(1) where is the "Layers panel"?

Is this that top to bottom open panel

that appears at the right side of an open AP document?

*** Basic question (2) EXACTLY where and how do I "select a pixel layer" in that panel?

I do not see any thing labeled  pixel layer

  7. I start with a blank page and draw a simple circle (no fill) with the circle making tool.

At this point it appears to have handles.

When I try to erase part of the circle with the  brush erase tool ,(hopefully leaving  leaving behind an arc), it won't work.

I looked up erase a vector object and it says:

    FROM HELP

    ------------------start help ---------

    1. From the Layers panel, select a pixel layer.
    2. From the Tools panel, select the Erase Brush Tool.
    3. From the Brushes panel, select a brush of your choice.
    4. Adjust the context toolbar settings.
    5. Drag on the page in the direction that you want the erase brush stroke to follow.

Items 3 thru 5 are clear enough

  8. Alfred:

I got the copy paste between two windows to work by two methods:

Method (1) Window 1 containing the legend I want to copy was made by opening a blank page and then

inserting  the original graph& legend (a simple tiff image (WITH NO LAYERS) ) using the file> PLACE command.

Then I used your suggestion of

"right-click the layer in the Layers panel and choose 'Rasterize...' to convert it to a Pixel layer so that you can work on it at the pixel level."

Then I was able to use the square marquee to select the legend, followed by copy and paste into the second window 2.

Method (2) don't use the file>PLACE command, but rather simply open the tiff file  in window 1 with the OPEN command. Then like before,

use the square marquee to select the legend, followed by copy and paste into the second window 2.

I think using the PLACE command as in method 1 created a layer? and that is why I had to use your  Rasterize suggestion?

QUESTION: I prefer the method 2 since it is simpler. But do both methods produce the same quality image?

that would be the deciding factor. the result appears to look of equal quality.

Thanks for your great suggestion on method 1

  9. How to cut and paste a selected image portion between two open AP windows?

First let me describe what I want to do by an aLTERNATE (non AP) method.

Say you have two open windows in AP, where you want to copy the color legend

in the window 1 plot image onto the plot image in window 2.

I use the grab application  in the MAC  utility tool box and clip out  (copy) the legend

in window 1 and then simply paste it into the appropriate spot in the window 2 plot image.

I was told by a staff member ( see quote below) that another way to do this in AP is:

"If you open both images in Affinity Photo you should be able to copy and paste the legend into your second image using the selection tools.  Once you have selected your legend go to Edit > Copy then switch to the document you want the legend to be placed into and go to Edit > Place:

I tried this two ways and I cannot get it to work!

Case 1)   I select the legend I want with the rectangular marquee tool and then press command key  copy on Mac

then I go to second wind ow and try to use Edit>Place.

BUT there is no place option under edit!  maybe he meant EDit>paste?

Case 2    I do the same thing except use Edit>paste as last step.

Then what I get is NOT the desired legend that I selected, but rather the whole graph & Legend!!

It is acting as if I copied the whole window 1 image, not the selected legend alone.

    Question:

Once you select the portion you want with the marquee selection, do you have to press some key combination of some sort (say the return key) to complete the marquee select operation before trying to copy it somewhere else?

  10. How to cut and paste between two open AP windows?

First let me describe what I want to do by an alternate (non AP) method.

Say you have two open windows in AP, where you want to copy the color legend

in the window 1 plot image onto the plot image in window 2.

I use the grab application  in the MAC  utility tool box and clip out  (copy) the legend

in window 1 and then simply paste it into the appropriate spot in the window 2 plot image.

How can I do this same operation using the AP tools?

I tried using the AP crop tool (in place of the Mac's grab utility), but when I tried

to paste the cropped legend into window 2, it ended up being a huge sized legend (maybe 5 times the original size),

with undesirable large gaps  between the handles and pasted legend  .

Using the grab utility app on the Mac did not change the size of the pasted legend and had nice desirable tight gaps between the handles and legend.

  11. Dear moderator from lisbon:

I sent the original .svg file you requested.

I think i sent a different one by mistake first, but the second one sent a little later is one used to make

PAGES prints shown in my earlier post.

I tried redoing making the tiff from the svg file, for both 8 bit tiff and 16 bit tiff,

but neither of them matched the output quality of the tiff produced from letting Graphic Converter

make the tiff from the original .svg file.

It is important to not that both AD and Graphic CONVERTER were fed EXACTLYthe same .svg file, so it is unclear why one makes a substantially sharper image when imported into say PAGES word processor.

I could always use GC as the final step, but that is a pain in the neck doing so for every file I operate on.

    Thanks for the comeback.

Also one suggestion was to use .pdf as an output file into PAGES, but my requirement is to use tiff files.

  12. I first created a nice clear graphic with AD and saved it as .svg file.

Next later , I open the AD generated  .svg file and save the graphic  as a .tiff file for later use in a PAGES document.

Next I insert the .tiff graphic into the apple PAGES word-processing document, and

I get a blurry looking image that was NOT blurry in the original .svg file

For comparison, I feed the same AD made .svg file into the "Graphic Converter" program and

save the image as a .tiff file, and then insert it into PAGES word-processing program and I get a nice sharp image!

The two side by side images are shown in the screen snapshot of the PAGES page.

(the forum would not allow a PAGES document to be attached)

    Question:

Why cannot AD directly produce a nice crisp .tiff image, (while Graphic Converted can

produce a crisp tiff image ) both  operating with THE SAME  AD .svg file?

    Note:

Had same problem making .jpg images from the base case AD .svg file.

  13. Thanks very much for reply

I could not get either of these suggestions to work.

When I hold down shift ket and shrink down, then all that happens is some sort of border outline shrinks down and the figure stays "as is" unchanged.

Next : re changing overall percentage of figure:

I had trouble finding the transform panel.

Help section gives tips on using it except for one thing,.... where to find it!

When I finally found it in bottom lower right under something labeled transform portion of

screen, i see things like  x   y    W and H given in  px units.

Cannot see where i enter a percentage.

  14. I have a .svg file plot of a curve with various text titles and axis labels on the graphic.

I want to reduce the overall height of the graphic while preserving the aspect ratio of text titles and curve labels.

when i do this now with AFFINITY but squeezing down the handles, the resulting reduced curve and axis stuff looks ok but the text labels look flattened.

When I do this same operation inside the MATLAB post processing package, it does preserve the aspect ratio while reducing only the height, so there is an example of where it is possible .

I would like to do it in Affinity.

    As a side question:

is there a percent reduction tool of some sort that can be applied to a graphic where the user enters the percent reduction desired in both the x and y directions separately, e.g. like the one in Adobe Illustrator?

  15. I want to make a simple straight line with a SINGLE arrow at the tip.

when I used the arrow tool, it does two things I do not like:

    1) it puts arrows at both ends

    2) the thickness of the straight line is too wide in proportion to the head of the arrow.

For example when I do this in illistrator, I would make the straight line and attach the arrow head with a second operation, when there are several options as to the shape of the arrow head (more pointed, less pointed etc).
