One more reason to divide the forum questions in 4 sub-forums. E.g .: in questions - Mac - Photo, questions - Mac - Designer, questions - Win - Photo and questions - Win - Designer

Are you in Export Persona?
In this case make sure the Matte is set to "none".
 
Otherwise, if you're exporting via File > Export, please check if you have Document > Transparent Background active.

Those are good solutions - but my focus is on the first time users. They must have seen / heard about the inpainting brush (or they wouldn't ask about it), but then can't find it when they open AP.

New users (or demo users) of AP ask again and again where they can find the inpainting brush - and that's only the ones bothering to create a forum account for that question.
 
I think it would help a lot if it was the default tool of the healing group.
 
 

It's bundled with the Healing brush / Red eye removal tool: click on the little arrow to see the other options

Yes, here's how (after you have rotated the picture):
- create a new Fill layer going to menu Layer ▸ New Fill Layer (to fill the transparent areas left by the rotation operation)
- move the Fill layer to the bottom of the layers stack in the Layers panel, right click on it and select Rasterise... (so you can merge it in the next step)
- select both the image and the Fill layer (now a Pixel layer after you have rasterised it)) in the Layers panel and merge them going to menu Layer ▸ Merge Selected.
- now select the Inpainting Brush Tool and paint over the solid colour areas of the old Fill layer. It should fill them with data from the image.

It would help if when starting a new thread I'd have to click 'AP / AD / both' - this would allow filtering the threads and the search results.

Downloaded the latest update yesterday and can say this app is getting impressive. It does work with AP and the resolution is very good. I wasn't impressed at the beginning so I would update but not bother to take a look but yesterday I did.
 
Have been using bridge but this app puts bridge to shame.
 
The other thing that is impressive is the colour pallet that accompanies each image.
 
You can now zoom AP so the little image can get larger without resolution problems. Take a look. It's impressive.

I actually figured things out although am having trouble cloning an area from one layer to another -- I did make sure to use the dropdown to select the different layer options but nothing worked. Other than that, however, I was able to accomplish the task...

Which is still an absolute BARGAN!

The Help file that comes with the program also provides information/instructions about all program's features, don't overlook it.
If you have any questions or find any issue when trying to achieve something just ask away here. There's plenty of knowledgeable people willing to help.

Thanks for all the quick responses.  I have viewed a number of the tutorials and they are very good (I hadn't known about the member videos, so I'll check them out - Thanks Lee D).  I was looking for something that would help me to understand what all the tools do.  It sounds like from Meb's response that a general book on photo editing would be of benefit.  Manu - Thanks, I did find the inpainting tool - it's pretty incredible how good it is.

Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
Press and hold ⌃(ctrl) while launching the application from Launchpad then select Clear in the dialog that will appear.
This will reset the app and will clean any leftovers/conflicts that may exist.
Let me know if you still have trouble after the reset.
