(I'd still like to be able to turn canvas rotation off as it happens a lot since Beta 1.3.5.7 when I zoom photos - which is really often.)

Edit: like mystrawberrymonkey below I'm using a track pad (macbook pro retina)

Came back to add: I also find Document - Add snapshot really practical: I use it when a tricky inpainting step went well. If I then screw up going further I can come back to how it was the last time I liked it.

I just did the photo below using the pinpointing brush, removing the bee from the flower (which I really wouldn't do) and it worked fine, so I guess I just have to get more familiar with what I can and can't do.

    > I just wanted to try out the inpainting tool on an image I didn't care about.

Ah - then I won't spend a lot of time on it, either.

    What I did
    - make the radius of the inpainting brush quite small
    - remove one part of the person at a time: first the head, then one piece of leg etc.
    - important: don't paint over the fence

When it doesn't work, go back a step with cmd + z and try again.

I think it would help you if you tried with a less complex picture first, for example a branch of a tree you want to remove from the blue sky or in your example picture remove the window of the barn (this can be done with one click if you make the brush radius big enough to cover the whole window at once).

    Hi manuschwendener.ch, csp,
This is related with how Affinity apps render the screen. It doesn't have any impact on the output.
The developers are aware of it.

manu i see this borders too seems a bug it depends on the magnification where and on what side of the image they appear

It seems you want to cover the sign with what you would like the app to replace it with the actual background. I see it as you trying to focus on the two men and the sign is merely a distraction so you want to get rid of it from the photo. So why don't you crop out the sign and leave the two men, I mean that is what you after right? Focus on the men?

As the original poster, my interpretation of a DAM would be just that - simply an asset manager.  IE, a catalogue / database that can search on keywords, etc. and quickly preview and launch an asset into Affinity Photo, Designer or Publisher.   I would not wish it to be an all in one Lightroom/Aperture look a like, but more like Bridge on steroids.   One important thing it should do would be to function as a metadata editor (keyboarding, dates, etc.), and file renaming and moving (something Lightroom is pretty good at).   Plus, being able to do these things as batches.    I personally would much prefer a DAM that is not bloated and is trying tries to include everything - including the kitchen sink.

    Hi Jim UK,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
Affinity Photo is a RAW converter/developer and Photo Editor. It doesn't manage libraries as iPhoto, Photos, Aperture and other DAM software (digital assets management).
There's already quite a few threads discussing alternatives (i've listed some below) and we do intend to launch our own DAM software later too.
    - Digital Asset Management with Affinity Photo Beta
    - Digital Asset Manager - a.s.a.p.
    - feature request: Affinity Lightroom Killer

    Hello jospo,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums :)

     1) Not in the Mac App Store version. We introduced Custom Shortcuts in the latest Photo Customer Beta which you can get from here (pinned at the top). Just remember to keep the MAS version installed to be able to run the Beta if you don't want to wait for the next MAS update. The Beta lets you assign a custom shortcut for the Perspective tool. There's currently no way to use the Perspective Tool non destructively.

    2) See answer above. Custom shortcuts are still not finished yet. More will be added as we move forward. If the one you're looking for isn't listed there, it's probably because it wasn't implemented yet.

    3) You can press and hold ⇧ (shift) to constrain the Free hand Selection Tool to straight lines. There's already a thread requesting to make this tool similar to the Polygonal Lasso tool in PS. This will be improved later in a future update.

    4) Check if Affinity Photo ▸ Preferences, Performance tab, View Quality is set to Bilinear (Best Quality).

    5) See my first reply.

    6) Currently no. You can however drag the colour picker from the Colour panel independently of the tool selected.

    7) The Flood Fill Tool only works with Pixel layers. If you have placed (or dropped) an image in your document (Image type layer), you must convert it to a Pixel layer rasterising it (right-click the image layer in the Layers panel and select Rasterise...)

    8) Press Q or click on the Toggle Quick Mask icon on the Persona toolbar on top with a selection active to enable Quick Mask, then change to the Move Tool and transform (scale, rotate, stretch and skew) the selection using the bounding box controls on canvas. Press Q again or the icon in the toolbar to finish.

    9) :)

manu schwendener reacted to A_B_C in Layers and Masks Concepts
    Hi everybody,
no offense, but I feel there’s a little confusion about concepts and terminologies here … basically you have to discern between pixel layers, object layers, image layers, adjustment layers, and mask layers.
Pixel layers. A pixel layer is basically a container where you can perform pixel based editing tasks like painting, erasing, selecting by a pixel selection marquee, and so on. Object layers. Then there are object layers, falling in different categories: smart shapes (rectangles, cogs, arrows, …), vector paths, text objects. Object layers become pixel layers, when they get rasterised (Layer > Rasterise …). Image layers. Suppose you created an empty document. Now place another file in that document (File > Place …). Then you will see an image (layer) appear in the layers list. An image (layer) is considered an object layer, just like a vector path, a vector shape or a text block. It retains most of its properties until it gets rasterised. I say “most of”, because the colour profile that may be embedded in the placed file gets converted to the colour workspace of the document, for example. Adjustment layers. These layers are used to perform non-destructive adjustment tasks (Brightness and Contrast, Curves, Black and White, …), and the range of their efficiacy depends on their position in the layers hierarchy. Basically, an adjustment layer that is nested to another layer (to a pixel layer, for instance) affects just the layer it is nested to. (The same applies to groups.) Otherwise it affects all layers beneath. Nesting an adjustment layer A to a layer B is performed by dragging A onto B in the layers list. Mask layers. A mask layer that is nested to another layer determines which parts of this other layer will be visible or invisible or semi-opaque. Otherwise it will determine the visibility (opacity) of all layers beneath. Masks are indeed unlike darken or lighten layers (i.e. layers which blend modes are set to “Darken” or “Lighten”). Paint on a layer set to “Darken” with a black brush, and you will usually see a black stroke appear. Paint on a mask with a black brush, and you will hide parts of the layer(s) affected by the mask. Excuse me, if I am not clear enough … I hope that makes sense … and please note, that the in-app help files (Help > Affinity Photo Help) are very valuable, when it comes to getting clear about questions like these. I just can recommend to have a look.
    Cheers, Alex

Hahaha, I loved the title so much I just had to have a look and see if I could make your request a reality!... and it turns out that your 'ridiculously unreasonable request' is something that we're already doing... ;)

I took this video over Christmas 2014 on my iPad Air 2 - it's the FULL version of Affinity Designer running one of the sample images - and it was FAST and the new iPad Pro is supposed to be nearly twice as fast again, so it should be awesome! We've already got a completely new UI under way for the iPad version, so it won't look anything like this, but at least it shows you that we're serious about it and that the tech works really well. Hopefully we won't be too late to the party, but when we arrive we expect to be offering something pretty special!... :)

    Hello do1625,
At the risk of overburdening you with yet more options, it seems to me that the Inpainting Brush, Blemish Removal Brush and Healing Brush tools would be the most suited to your task. They are the tools I think I would first reach for with somthing like this.
To get some idea of how they work have a watch of this to get you started:

    Hello there

I'm an amateur photographer from Switzerland (http://manuschwendener.ch), mainly using my pictures to make postcards.

Switched from Nikon to Fuji some time ago and never looked back (same price range, much better sensor).

Until now I only did some basic editing, just started learning how to use layers with the help of the AP video tutorials.

Blown away by what the inpainting brush can do and looking forward to sticky settings ;)

I would like a newbie section in this forum where I could post pictures (or a link to them) and describe what I want to achieve and somebody else would maybe tell me how they'd do it. I'm aware that there is "Questions", but I feel it would be displaced there.

    Glad to be on board
    Manu
