If you didn't add any layers on purpose it can have happened automatically with one of the corrections/adjustments you made.
See screenshot for a typical situation for me: I use the levels adjustment to make the picture brighter - if I afterwards want to use the inpainting brush or such I first have to click on the Layers tab in the right hand column (because the Adjustments tab is selected) and then select Background instead of Levels Adjustment.

That would be really useful. Either option would work for me.

It's on the list of common feature requests https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/10410-common-feature-requests-index- so not implemented yet, no.

'Fence' is finished and replaced: http://manuschwendener.ch/2015/07/26/zolli-2
> replace the dark fence with one of the greens next to it
selection and refine selection, invert selection (to preserve the Meerkat's fur next to the fence)
loads of inpainting brush a bit of clone, dodge, burn and sponge, all at less than 100% opacity
Still would have preferred to just change the colour of the fence to green, keeping the texture - and be done with it ;)

Rui, thanks again for posting the .afphoto file for the columns; I'll try to follow your steps - might take some time..

'Boy' is finished and replaced, thank you all for your help (http://manuschwendener.ch/2015/07/10/aarhus-aros-art-museum, last picture).
> hide the bright light source close to his left eye
selection and refine selection (tutorial videos), clone tool with opacity lower than 100%
> replace the yellowish parts of the ceiling with the cooler colour next to it
selection, sponge brush to desaturate
> replace the dark lines above his arms with the colour of the ceiling
clone tool

This keeps popping up in Questions - which also means a lot of people give up without asking:
When somebody wants to download the example pictures on the welcome screen, the red x can be confusing and the blue line around the picture (status bar) is easy to overlook, not least because it takes some time to start filling.
-
The red x confuses a lot of people. The trick is to ignore it and wait a bit: after some time, there should be a thin blue circle starting to get filled up around the example picture: this is your status bar.
The red x is meant to interrupt the download, the blue circle takes some time to _start_ and then still is very discreet..
Another source of confusion can be: the pictures load _within_ Affinity, not on your desktop or in your download folder.

> since the fence is very dark, i fear that the color replacement brush would not be effective
yes, that was exactly the reason for this thread :)
(I'll give it another try later)

Once something is on the roadmap (https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/10075-affinity-photo-feature-roadmap) or on the common feature requests list I know I don't have to ask for it in the forum because it's already planned or has been acknowledged as a feature request.

> switching to an all Affinity workflow is my goal
Mine too, but you'll need to be patient. The Affinity DAM is planned, but no date announced (https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/10410-common-feature-requests-index).

Thank you, stefano and Rui - I'll take a shot at it again as soon as I can.

Thank you, Madame! I'll see if I can reproduce these as soon as I get to it. Especially the column is exactly what I'm aiming for.
-
Thank you, stefano - the thread is not new, but I have updated the posts several times.
I'll try applying what you suggest as soon as I can.

[my idea didn't work]

There's a list of mostly short videos, arranged by topic https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/10119-in-house-affinity-photo-video-tutorials, the first one of them 'For Beginners' a good place to start.
-
If you're feeling generous, maybe you could point me in the right direction for how to solve these? https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/10190-photo-replace-one-colour-with-another-like-red-eye-removal-but-with-colour-picker
-
Ah - that's because I apparently can't read.. (sorry)

Photo: replace one colour with another (like red eye removal, but with colour picker)

Not on a conscious level (as I'm only showing the corrected version), but the pictures get stronger when they're less cluttered.
