If you didn't add any layers on purpose it can have happened automatically with one of the corrections/adjustments you made. See screenshot for a typical situation for me: I use the levels adjustment to make the picture brighter - if I afterwards want to use the inpainting brush or such I first have to click on the Layers tab in the right hand column (because the Adjustments tab is selected) and then select Background instead of Levels Adjustment.

This keeps popping up in Questions - which also means a lot of people give up without asking: When somebody wants to download the example pictures on the welcome screen, the red x can be confusing and the blue line around the picture (status bar) is easy to overlook, not least because it takes some time to start filling.

The red x confuses a lot of people. The trick is to ignore it and wait a bit: after some time, there should be a thin blue circle starting to get filled up around the example picture: this is your status bar. The red x is meant to interrupt the download, the blue circle takes some time to _start_ and then still is very discreet.. Another source of confusion can be: the pictures load _within_ Affinity, not on your desktop or in your download folder.

Once something is on the roadmap (https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/10075-affinity-photo-feature-roadmap) or on the common feature requests list I know I don't have to ask for it in the forum because it's already planned or has been acknowledged as a feature request.

Thank you, A_B_C :-) I was astonished that he neither looked scared nor angry, but quite relaxed from that perspective. He has a great place in Aros: the ceiling is high enough so he'd have enough space to get up.
