A blend tool would be nice. I have said before that Affinity Designer is only several features away from being on par if not better then Adobe Illustrator. Maybe a bunch of most requested features will be in 2.5? the .5's seem to be the larger feature updates.

To me this is the list of things I think Designer needs to be roughly on par with Illustrator functionality wise:
    - Raster-to-vector conversion.
    - Pure vector brushes/erasers.
    - A blend tool.
    - Vector pattern tools/fills.
    - Freeform vector gradients.
    - Some curve modifier tools that affect the shape of curves; i.e. randomise, noise, smudge, smooth, sharpen, and additional node merging options like merge by distance and merge to last/first selected.
As for making Designer just straight up better than Illustrator in practically every way, then add animation support that works across Designer and Photo. Designer would practically become a more streamlined and well implemented version of Adobe Flash/Animate. That's more wishful thinking, but I do believe Affinity could be a great tool for raster and vector animation if it had a solid animation timeline (as long as it doesn't work like Photoshop's timeline that is :P).
I kind of doubt that Serif are holding out on features just for 2.5.

I would like this option but really don't need it. I have had to create windows .ICO files that have multiple sizes and different bit depths or windows dev environment will reject the combined file. The app that does this very well and free, GIMP...lol I have this app specifically for making .ICO files.

Software companies always charged for version upgrades. Remember Adobe before the subscription model? About every 2-3 years you had to purchase the next version. If you had CS2 you had to pay to get CS3 if you wanted the updates. On the Macromedia side I had just purchase FreeHand 7 then 8 came out soon after and it wasn't free but was offered at a discount.

I am just guessing but for the 1.10 release Serif talked about how they spent a lot time improving performance and the underlying code so now going forward I think they will be able to focus on getting features added faster. We will see if this is true in the next few months.

The subscription model if you want to call it that I think would work for Serif is the model the UI app Sketch uses. When you buy you get 1 year of updates then after that you can still continue to use the software going forward. If at some point you see updates you think are worth it you pay the renewal fee for another year of updates. Doing this affinity would need to be consistent with updates.

It hasn't been a year yet since 1.10.5 so there will probably be something soon. Heck I am still discovering things in the current release and whenever the next update arrives I would hope there are updates to the core features like more path and node editing options etc.

I was just saying this on facebook..LOL This model would make sense. Since the release of publisher + the ipad versions the dev teams seem to be spread thin. Hopefully they aren't hoarding big features for a paid 2.0 upgrade. The Sketch model would allow them to hire and give each app the attention it deserves.

Also it would be nice when double clicking on a guide the Guides manager popped up as well as a keyboard shortcut. This was handy on FreeHand.

dsnaps12 reacted to The Herbalizer in New Feature Request: Ability to 'curve' a linear gradient
    Hi,
I often find myself wishing I could make a linear gradient fill be curved rather than, well, linear (ie. a straight line). Wouldn't it be cool if you could add a node or nodes to a path perpendicular to the gradient fill path with control handles which could be manipulated as when using the pen tool in standard pen mode to create bezier curvature to the shape of the gradient fill.......
In case it's not clear what I mean, I have attached a quick mock up where:
A is a linear gradient fill applied to a straight object to give a 3D effect of, say, a pipe
    B. is the same linear gradient applied to a curved object (the 3D effect achieved in A. is lost)
    C. is the gradient following the curve of the object (shading done for this illustration using the brush tool on a pixel layer) where the red line is the bezier path and the blue line the gradient fill path
    Just saying.......
    🙂
    Thanks guys !

Yes these options would be great. It would be nice if the devs could just copy and past the code from drawplus of these features and improve them. Ha ha. But nope it doesn’t work like that.

I'd like to see that happen too. Since all their revenue only comes from attracting new users, that's where all their development efforts are focused. And hence why long standing, fundamental issues are never addressed - fixing them won't generate new sales so they're forever in the backlog. A change of business model is probably needed like you described, otherwise I can't see AD ever becoming a true professional tool.
I bet the refocus on Publisher and slow AD updates is because AD has probably reached a certain degree of market saturation and is not generating the sales it used to. So they create a new product and invest most resources in that until it also ends up in the same situation at which point it'll enter maintenance mode and they'll develop a new product. Is this really better than Adobe? Not for me at least.

The Affinity team took down the roadmap awhile ago but it would be nice if they did something like this. While the 1.9 release candidate is being tested they could post what they plan to tackle in the next 1 or 2 updates. For example we plan on tackling gradient mesh and vector distort in ver 1.10, and bug fixes only in 1.11. This way us user's have a idea of what to look forward to. Right now the beta comes out and you look at the release notes and go aww still no features requested 4 years ago only bug fixes.

@MattP Is it also possible to work in applying a contour gradient to shapes created with this tool or any of the shape tools.?
Example attached like Freehand did it.

Contour gradients that follow the shape of your paths like these old FreeHand MX examples would be a great edition.
