Wosven got a reaction from William Overington in Hardcopy output
You found it!
I never set metal tyle by hand. Bur the wood casing were they were ordered were used as decorative items to put on the wall and display collection of small objects (especially owls for my mother).
Since PC/Mac weren't so common, and less printers (with black ink), we used all tricks possible (photocopies, markers for drawing roughts...) for our projects. When I begin working, computers were more spreads, but we send files and not PDF (or with?) to our printers.
Long ago, we could find some sort of automatic printers, were you only had to put an USB key, choose a format, pay and wait for a folder of pictures to be printed instantly.
Perhaps local photographs can provide such services? Or some other shop that print on T-shirt, etc.

Thanks for your positive reviews dannyg9 and @MikeTO!
And don't you worry @dannyg9, people from the 60s/70s are not old, but vintage!

I have never met the word 'omothetic' before, and I cannot find a definition, but it looks like a nice word to be able to use.
I remember that lovely word 'paysage' that you used.
Pronounced as sort of English (paySARGE) rhyming with LARGE Is that right?
So one could have a poem.
The picture is large
Oriented paysage
A word I learned about some years ago that I had not known before is 'potable', which I saw used in an article about a self-catering holiday village in Italy where people were advised to bring bottled water with them, as the local water supply is not potable.
A word that I like is 'eutopia' and the related word 'eutopian'.

Wosven reacted to R C-R in two people open pub file and only one can save
Thanks! I really appreciate yoiur taking the time to compose such a detailed reply.
So if I have this right, the document file itself isn't actually locked. Instead, whenever a user opens the document file in their local copy of the app, it writes a normally hidden companion file (I assume in the same directory as the document) that basically says the document is in use, so any other copy of the app can check for that & know the document should either not be opened, opened as read only, or some such.
I assume something like that could be added to the Affinity apps but unless they can solve the issue of possible file corruption when editing a file not on a local drive, there doesn't seem to be any point in doing that.

It's not a server configuration (servers allow access, read/write, etc. rights as usual). But the apps (Adobe/Office/Libreoffice suites add a specific .~[garbage_unique].lck or similar hidden file that it's able to reconize. (I'm not sure data about last modifications are contained in this file, but it's related to the ability to lock the file and to ask if you want to recover it if for some reason the app crashed or closed without saving.)
If it was a server setting, the apps wouldn't be able to provide recovery options.
Usually, if you delete the ".~…" file, you can open the unmodified one without problem (it's helpfull with corrupted recovered files dues to apps crashing: you can't open the recovery, but the one prior modifications).
Since it's at apps level, and there's not anymore difference between files depending on OSes (only between apps), perhaps it's not a problem between OSes. (At work, there's PC & Mac and we use the same servers).
An app like Adobe reader will lock the file without any visible (hidden!) file. You won't be able to overwrite ot move a PDF if it's opened in AR. Perhaps it's only modifying its properties to read-only.
You're right about this (at least with old Office version — we sometime had to unlock/delete the locking file but I suspect it depends of the type of file system, new one contains more datas and seem better —, I hadn't this problem with Office365 and newer servers).
With ID files, the files aren't locked for a specific user. Anyone wanting to open the file will be asked to recover the latest version after a crash. Since companies don't always update to the latest version — for different reasons —, one of the way to recover a corrupt file can be to open and recover the file in a superior version of the app (it's possible to keep 2 different versions on the same computer).
If you delete or move the locking file, the file will open in the last saved version.
It's working effectively and is the choice of different companies with a lot of experience. Today, and especially with the Covid, we have a world wide experience for remote work and accessing servers. People tend to use different options to have their files on the cloud (servers). It's important and easier to backup servers, than working locally and doing copies or using synchronization (for example, Microsoft OneDrive is useful but a pain, not really different of the Backup app we used in the past!).
It would be nice for AD/AP/APub to be able to join this worflow (when we tested them, one of the first to stop using them did so because the apps weren't servers friendly).

Both Google Translate and Microsoft Bing Translator treat “homothétique” as an English word if you let them auto-detect the language, but they translate it correctly if you tell them that it’s French. DeepL Translator auto-detects the language correctly.

Hi. After some practice with Affinity I created my (almost) first artistic montage. I don't know what to think about it, I just can't watch on it as 3rd person, you know So here it is, I did my best to make it as real as possible. However, if it's crap, then tell me. I would really like to know how good it is, and I mean how convincing that deer over there seems to be. I would appreciate if you wuould note this like x/10. Thanks a lot ;).

Sorry, it was "homothetic", but the older I get the lazier I am, and instead of using a real dictionary, I used Google translate (is it me or is it worst each time I use it?), "homothétique" didn't get any result, but "omothétique" get one. I'm wondering if it doesn't try to create word from prefixes and known suffixes... 😱
I learn this word as a student, in typography course, when we needed to use a large print of a font (A4), and use geometrical means and tools to enlarge it to a "format raisin" sheet of paper (50 × 65 cm), keeping the blue construction strokes, and using ruling pens and brushes to paint it in gouache.
We learn a lot of interesting tricks in this pre-computer era
In fact, that's something we use a lot in the app, using key to constrain the ratio when resizing objects. That's resizing homothetically!

If you just want "something looking like", you can do this:
In a perspective point of view, it would mean thinking a little bit more to get the exact size and position
The file, done in the bêta (to do it faster, I used "erase mode", but it could be done with only vectors too):

Hi Matt, I can confirm that this is a known issue on Windows and it's logged with our developers. I can't offer any other solutions than the ones already mentioned in this thread but I will bump the report again.

I usually use a minimum of 118 pixel for 1 cm (10 mm), when checking images for print in magazines (or 120 pixels/cm, simpler to multiply).
You could need a better resolution if there's text, since it need more details or it'll look blury. 300 PPI is a minimum (but we accept 280 if the image is good... or we can use more).
If you work with vectors, you can use an omothetic size, and export at the one you want later, in the export panel or using the export persona (AD & AP).

@Wosven @R C-R We only want the Affinity files to lock once a user opens it. Remote, On prem, Server, Local, should not matter. These applications should work the same as other applications such as O365 Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Adobe CS Photoshop, etc... (and almost every other app on this planet).
We are a firm with 5 offices and have the infrastructure in place to effectively work together on all aspects of a project whether you are in an office or at home with zero issues accessing files. Overwriting someone else's work is (was) a thing of the past until this issue appeared. Yes, it's user mistake by selecting Replace on the file but there should be no chance for this to happen and lose work.

Hi @William Overington
Those are long posts... perhaps adding images instead of links or PDF would help get more answers.
If someone had a problem in front of me, after asking for a doctor or trying to call help, I/help would search in a wallet or handbag for card with health datas, not a keyring (unless the person is conscious enough to show the keyring).
But I suspect any medical staff will check or be more at ease with official information/card that the ones provided by a keyring.
-
Wosven reacted to Alfred in Hardcopy output
That’s a very good point. One also needs to consider the possibility that the keyring might become separated from its owner: important medical details are usually recorded on a small document that can be kept in a bracelet which is worn at all times.

@John Rostronthat doesn't work for a company. We are not home users. We cannot copy to local and leave our secure corporate network - that would be crazy ☺️. In addition, User B can still open and edit the file if left on the corporate network and what would be the purpose of allowing two users to edit if we have to jump through these hoops. The fact that it's allowable is what is questioned as it serves no purpose unless both users can save much like onedrive operates. Any other version stuff is a workflow that just does not work.
