Wosven got a reaction from RickyO in Variable Fonts
In the futur, old fonts won't be compatible with new OS.
You can buy a whole family font if, like me, you'd rather use one with more than regular, italic, bold and bold-italic... but buying new fonts and licences for each computer have a cost. Why not, for the same price for this font, not get the variable ones?
You'll have the classical settings, but if you find the condensed one "too condensed", you'll be able to modify it. Without needing to install 90 fonts, but only 1 file.
You want the same "feeling" while reading the print version and the web site, but the settings in the web site need the font to be a little bit larger to better legibility? It'll be easy with the variable font, and people won't notice unless they compare screen and paper (but from experience, not everyone will notice).

Another problem: imagine you're working in a team, and this magazine's template original text styles use more than regular and italic for a font. But the archive/package you were given only contain regular and italic of the main font since the document didn't used all the text styles available. You'll have to ask for the needed fonts, or install them or use a third party app for this if you don't use variable fonts, if you need to use text styles with different specificities.
If the package contains a variable font, no problem.

Have you ever use a service like Typekit? I tend to only install the specific font and variants I need, to avoid cluttering my computer. But sometimes  I end up needing more variants, or need to select another font if the one I choose first miss them. I wouldn't have this problem with variable fonts.
For now, old fonts are compatible with our systems, but the day we'll have to buy new versions of our fonts, or use services like Typekit/Monotype fonts, it's best to search what are the best options.

And on a personal point of view, I read about variable fonts in the 90' when I was a student, and having them existing now, 30 years later is a dream come true! 🤩 (at the time, we were also switching from a technology to another one... it also take nearly a decade and new OS.)

Just taking a little time and thinking this logically, it's possible to use a linked file to get easily a result. Duplicating and flipping an image isn't so difficult...

    Status: Beta
    Purpose: Fixes
    Requirements: Purchased Affinity Publisher
    Windows Store: Not Submitted
    Download: Download
    Auto-update: Not Available
    ---
We are pleased to announce that Affinity Publisher Customer Beta 1.10.2.1187 is now available as a download from the link above.
If this is your first time using a customer beta of an Affinity app, it’s worth noting that the beta will install as a separate app - alongside your store version. They will not interfere with each other at all and you can continue to use the store version for critical work without worry.
This beta is an incremental update to the 1.10.1 version recently released to all customers. We recommend that you use this beta in preference to the release version if you are affected by any of the issues listed below.
    ---
Fixed document with 'Save History' failing to save after promoting a Group to a Layer. Fixed PSD import of Linear Burn blend mode being imported as Multiply. Vector import (SVG, IDML etc) can be created at incorrect size. Space incorrectly gets added to text on clipboard if you double click a word to highlight. Fixed bug when deleting multiple pinned objects at the same time. Other assorted small fixes. Previous Beta Release Notes

When precisely placing 2 or 3 guides. I would like to be able to select them, duplicate them and move them together to another location of the illustration. Also selecting a guide and hitting "delete" when you do not need it anymore is faster than having to move it back to the ruler area.

Oups, and with the full Layer panel (on which I should have done the anotations), it's better:

The problem comes from the curves inside the adjustment layers.
If you disable them, the bleed is OK.
You need to put them out of the adjustments, and put the adjustments in one of the curves, with a copy of the turtle at the bottom, inside also.
=> The file will be huge! This double page in PDF/Xa-1:2003 is 70-85 Mo.
Perhaps there's another way, avoiding the duplicate of the turtle.

Wosven reacted to smadell in Can this hair be "fixed" or better looking in AP?
A different take from me. Given that the ladies don't want any "fake Photoshop look(s)" on the image, subtlety is important. To begin with, the image is kind of flat and needs some Brightness and Contrast. That was the first thing I added. Second, I think that the hair looks "matted down and blurry" because (a) the whole image is low contrast; and (b) the photo is indeed a bit blurry. To deal with that, I added a Curves adjustment and a High Pass adjustment, put them into a Group, and masked the group to entirely black. Then, using a soft brush with low opacity and low flow, I painted the hair only with white, bringing those adjustments onto the hair (but not onto other areas). Also, I set the Blend Mode of the High Pass adjustment to Soft Light, since this give a softer and more subtle effect.

Wosven reacted to EBJohnson in 3-Way Color Corrector
Apologies, I thought it was a known thing. It's a pretty standard color correction model in video... I've attached examples from... a version of Resolve and FCP7.

Basically color wheels tied to shadow/mids/highlights and in resolve, though not pictured, there's also a global corrector. Capture One also has a similar option. It's very useful for eliminating color casts, since it's not tied to a single RGB channel. The addition of lightness/saturation, per range, sliders are also nice for fine tuning the correction.

Think of it as a different GUI approach to the Color Balance adjustment layer. It could just be a toggle in that tool... since it's function is so similar, but again, you can get faster results by being able to control all three color channels at the same time.

Ah, thanks, the D and A values refer to the cursor position only, not to a layout object. That confused me when holding the shift key, were the cursor position can change in a direction different to the affected object.

Wosven reacted to typotaurus in Textbox that was “fit to content” in InDesign leads to overset text after IDML import
Something that causes a lot of additional cleanup work when importing idml files is if the InDesign file contained many text frames (mainly single line frames) that were “fit to content” they will not be rendered big enough in Publisher to immediately show the text. Rather the textbooks have to be enlarged to get all the text. It would be great to correctly handle this on import.

The A value appears quite weird. Here I cmd-opt-shift drag an object. When moving first I would not expect a value different from 0 (or maybe 180 or -180). When rotating the value at the cursor shows the expected whereas the A value seems strange again.

It has been mentioned many, many times now that the place to discuss this is the feature requests forum. That's why over the course of what is now 12 pages this has been mentioned quite a few times.
I have no vendetta against this feature; in fact, I would like to see it implemented too. But for the reasons mentioned (also more than once now) I would like to see people supporting it in the place intended for that, where it will do the most good.
I get that it is frustrating that not just this but many other often requested features have yet to be implemented. I am frustrated about that too. But I understand that if people keep posting in Questions topics like this one instead of in the feature request forums, then nobody benefits.

Wosven reacted to lacerto in Modify a spot color or a global color.
Yes, quite often it is useful to pick a spot color (f you e.g. know the official corporate color), even if you know that it will be printed with process inks, and then later convert it to CMYK when knowing details of the project (e.g. whether to print on coated or uncoated stock, etc.), and using color profiles for the conversion (instead of abstract values provided by PANTONE). Sometimes it can go the other way around: ending up printing a specific color by using spot color, and there, too, many apps help picking up the closest match when making the change. Not needing to reassign object colors is of course a plus.

There's a thread somewhere asking to be able to modify it, since the colors or the size of the checker board can be difficult to discern, depending of design, size, disabilities, etc.

But it's part of those features we ask for years without real improvment but tricks...
