For converting a file to another file format, you need first to have your file format set and nearly finished, or each time you improve your file format you'll have to modify the conversion process to suit the last changes
When afpub format will be stable enough, they'll be able to do conversion, not before.

OK I can now understand the use. I can’t believe this is a big market though. Who really works primarily in this way? I can imagine odd situations where travelling to a meeting or something when having all the files embedded could be useful in order to be able to make last minute alterations.
BUT, I think it would be much clearer for it to be an export option, a bit like exporting to a packaged InDesign file but it could be all self contained in a single file. I just don’t think the dangers of embedding being used incorrectly should be outweighed by the marginal and occasional benefits for a few lone rangers.

Imagine having an organisation of 1000 people. Likely working in teams, therefore needing linking rather than embedding. It would only take one person to accidentally embed rather than link and it will create an IT query: “why aren’t my images updating”. Imagine trying to make sure 1000 people continue to use the app properly (for the organisation) when it’s default is the wrong setting. It would be a nightmare.
Happy for the setting to be sticky, but the default has to be linking.

I think it is important that Publisher works in a similar way to other DTP apps in these fundamental concepts.
Linking is probably the major reason many people use DTP apps over other solutions. It allows for many things, some are
    - Team working. People can be working on artwork while others work on the layout. Embedded files fundamentally do not allow this.
    - File sizes stay low. Very important on large, image heavy documents.
    - Linked to above, it allows for files to be opened and saved quickly with each save / version not taking up loads of space on a back up
    - Easy replacement of artwork. Not only can artwork be updated on the fly (by others) you can easily have placeholder artwork which then you just overwrite with final files when they are complete. This allows for a document to be storyboarded early.
Quite simply a DTP app that isn’t fundamentally based around linked files is not targeting professional, team based production environments. Perhaps it might work for individuals, but not teams or more complex workflows.

As suggestion you once you complete January save the style of this table.
Then you can apply this style to subsequent months. Of course you could also copy and paste the first table and change the details there.
    Great work.

I'm going to use a Calendar as a way of showing a few useful features I found out - and some suggestions.
Firstly, dragging out a table is great! Select the Table icon in the tool bar, select the Snapping tool to get it to snap to the margins, and simply Drag Out the table - you will see it gives dimensions - rows and column counts too! Pretty cool!
There are only a few modifier keys available. A modifier key is when you are using the mouse to move/alter something and press a key on the keyboard to get it to behave a different way.
Shift = constrains proportions CMD = sizes from the centre point where you clicked on the screen What I think is missing is a modifier key to allow the amount of rows and columns  - simple arrow keys could add and remove rows and columns would be super useful!

For this calendar - I only want the First 3 rows to appear. Month - Days - Dates
I draw out the table and let go of the mouse and low and behold - I have 7 (that was lucky) columns and 3 rows, as I only dragged down that far.

The added feature that's pretty cool!
With the Table tool still selected - you can drag down the table from the tab as indicated. Or similarly - on the right hand side, grab the tab and drag to add more columns!
You can slide them up and down or left and rigth until you have the desired amount of columns or rows.

However, once you have made your decision - you cannot remove the rows/columns by dragging them back up. I presume this is to prevent deleting information accidentally, however, if the cells are empty I don't see why this can't be done
If you want to remove the column/row you can select it and right click and choose Delete Row
However if you have more than one row/column selected you cannot choose to Delete Rows!
            No option to Delete Rows
To delete more than one Row/Column you have to use the Table menu and choose "Delete Rows" or "Delete Columns"

    Onto the calendar!
Select the top row and right click and choose Merge Cells

View>Studio>Table (I believe this menu and sub menus are subject to change)

Select your table and add some "Insets" so the text doesn't butt up against the cell wall - this is optional and you can adjust to how you like.
Very important to ensure you're on the CELLS portion - there is an option for the FRAME - which is above in the screenshot of the Table  Panel, this is relating to the Frame the table sits in and not the Table Properties.
That's a bit confusing becuase you'd expect the Table options to the forefront of the options, however, not a major issue!

In fact it's all optional - I'm leaving mine plain because I want to show another feature.
Insert the Month top row - days on the 2nd row - and leave the 3rd row blank.

Select the entire 3rd row and go to View>Studio>Paragraph
Expand the Bullets and Numbering List!

Choose 1. 2. 3. 4.     Change the text section to read as.

Note - when you edit this panel option - you need to hit Return - this shouldn't be the case - if you don't hit return your changes won't be implemented.
Your table should now look like this!

Grag the TAB as shown before - to expand the table to add more rows.

January 2019 starts on a Tuesday (any calendar will tell you that )
Cool feature! You can select cells noncontiguous - that means they don't have to be beside each other.
To do this - select the A3 cell - then let go of the mouse to leave it highlighted. Press the CMD key (possibly CTRL on PC) which is the "modifier key" then select the remaining cells.
From the List Type in the Paragraph Panel - you can then set this to NO LIST.

Your table will now automatically renumber to ensure all the days have the correct number assigned.

Drag the handle down on the side of the table -  to make it fill the page!

Select the numbered rows - right click and select distribute rows evenly

    Duplicate your page

    Rename Month to February
January ended on a Thursday - so February starts on a Friday and February 2018 has 28 days.

Select the first 3 days - and set the Paragraph Numbering to No List

    Voila! February is Done!

    Add your icons!

Now you can repeat the steps to make the remaining calendar months!

Hi, I'm a commercial printer in Nottingham, rather than graphic designer and as such would appreciate a few missing, but necessary features:
    1. Although it's possible to add bleed to a document set-up and export to a PDF with the bleed, I cannot see away of seeing the edge of the bleed area when working on a document. This is a fundamental requirement. In the beta version any design components disappear when they exceed the edge of the page.
    2. When creating a new document with bleed - you have to first created the document without bleed and then go back to document set up to add the bleed.
    3. When importing a PDF with crop marks etc there are no import options such as importing to the trim size, bleed size or media size.
    4. There appears to be no way to scale an imported PDF (or any other kind of image) to a set size, e.g. 10% 50% or 200% for example.
    5. It crashes a lot on my Mac Book Pro, 2018 model, when using it with a second 4K second screen.
There's lots of things I really like about Publisher so keep up the really good work.

    Jesse,
My post was in response to the post that I read, after that I found your post that preceded it further up the chain and I do see that we both have similar opinions about Adobe. If you only read your second post that point isn't clear (but it is in the first post). I'm not sure why I didn't see your first post but nevertheless I should have seen it. Sorry that you think I'm defensive. I'm not defensive and from what I read here most people who post here are pretty laidback and helpful. In fact most of the people that I interact with here are really nice and helpful. Some are funny and sarcastic but still enjoyable and many are incredibly knowledgeable.
I'm still interested in hearing about all those companies that you were talking about that have a higher level of transparency than Serif does. I've never seen a company that was as upfront about what they are doing and where they are going with their development as Serif has been. I think it is refreshing and it is surprising to hear anyone claim that Serif is falling short in that regard. As far as customer service goes, from my experiences with Serif over the past 4 years their customer service has been stellar. I lived many years in Japan which has hands down the best customer service on the planet and I would say that Serif's customer service is very Japanese like. To me, Serif's customer service and the developers and other employees who post here on these forums do a remarkable job helping people, listening to complaints, requests (which I can imagine gets annoying after a time), and questions. I'm sure that they even type messages with a smile on their faces. Can you give me an example of where they fall short with their customer service?
I can understand your point about how Serif markets its software but I disagree. Not all professionals use Adobe's software so saying something is for professionals doesn't mean that something is a replacement for Adobe's stuff. I use Designer the most but I still use Illustrator from time to time. So to me Designer isn't a substitute for Illustrator, it is an alternative to it. I think that many people are like that. Serif is making and supporting its own software and they have their own philosophy on how things should work. Is it for professionals? I think so and it seems that many other professionals do too. Is it for everyone? Only each user can decide. You brought up the issue of comparing it to Adobe so that is why I commented on it. This is a discussion so I would think it is acceptable. You said that I proved your point but to me it wasn't proved at all so if you wouldn't mind going ahead and making a better case for it I'm looking forward to reading it.
Of course I'm all for improving Designer. I do my best to make suggestions and give feedback in a manner that is civil without being demanding and rude. I too came to Designer from Illustrator and I am willing to put up with a few small inconveniences caused by a lack of a feature or two because I think Designer is headed in the right direction. I like the choices that the developers have made and I trust that they are taking the program in the direction that is best. I wish you the best of luck with learning Designer and I hope that you are successful in your artistic or other graphics related pursuits.
    Best regards,
    Hokusai

Wosven got a reaction from AdamW in First things I've noticed
APub only use "real" font, as in bold, italic, bold italic, etc. and it's how it should be.
You can create a faux italic with shear and faux bold with a stroke, but best practice is to avoid this and only use fonts with at least B, I and BI options.
Thin strokes can't be printed and some pro software like Pitstop will convert them to acceptable stroke width… messing the result. Shearing font will do a poor job of simulating an italic when the intended italic one would have been design with love and professionalism by the typographer.
One of the fisrt rule you learn in pro work is to respect fonts and font designer: avoid shearing, strokes to simulate bold, NEVER modify horizontal or vertical scale since if you don't know anything about how doing this discreetly it'll shout "amateur" to everyone (and creating such variant is really a work of adjusting design, width, optical perception…).

Sorry if I said this in a blunt way, I hope I would have done it better and with more diplomacy in my own language

Please check out the bottom right combobox in the Position and Transform section of the Character Panel for synthesised Super / Subscript.
We have chosen not to synthesise italic / bold - there is a lot more to creating for instance, a good quality italic than just applying a shear transform to the regular outlines.

I send you a higher resolution one
I'm sorry, I missed your posts and didn't answered
The hard part to set 45° (your brush seems ok, degres are a general indication depending of calligraphies to try to keep the nib in at the right angle), is that it should slightly change angle to produce a little bit more or less thickness (= more supple strokes). Perhaps it's possible to obtain this with the rotation jitter set on pressure? And it would need more accumulation at the end of the strokes when raising the nib from the hu… screen
There's good scan of calligraphied texts today on internet and you should be able to set different brushes at different angles for different calligraphy.
It's a meditative and soothing skill as you said, but I noticed it didn't help to calm you when you are in a bad mood and produce terribles strokes

I wanted to try and make some sense of the image, well to see if what I created made much sense, I used to do calligraphy; a very meditative art.
Actually in the course of doodling I made a calligraphy brush in pixel persona but that was behaving oddly, the displayed brush head was not showing intuitively, it was actually the opposite angle of the nib displayed in the brush properties panel, see image for details.
Something else I've only just noticed is, rotation is Percent, I would have thought rotation would/should have been in Degrees; how do you set a 45º nib?

You can do that. Export from Word in RTF format to preserve italic formatting. (Publisher will preserve styles, too, if the source uses them.) Then in the Find panel, click on the top cogwheel, select Options > Font > Italic. In the Replace cogwheel, click Character Style > Emphasis. You don't have to put any actual text in either Find or Replace with. If there's no text in Find, it will find all text with the requested formatting.

Here a fabulous site about orthotypographie  (Typographical syntax) where typographers discussed and debated — sometime strongly — of the best way to write and ponctuate in French. It's the page about numbers , and I confirm we only use spaces or a coma between numbers (lazy people can insert a point instead of a coma, since it's conveniently on the numeric pad, but it's frown upon).

Wosven reacted to Aammppaa in Confused: Affinity Publisher Can Already Promote Objects On The Master Page
    I am very confused.
For the past week this forum has been inundated with demands, in various forms (posts, blogs, videos) that Affinity Publisher have the ability to create a layout as a Master Page, and then make local changes on each page of the document.
I am confused, because Affinity Publisher can already do this!
I am very confused because nobody at Serif has pointed out that Affinity Publisher can already do this!
And no, I am not talking about the workaround of cloning the Master Layer on a Page, turning off the Master and working on the local copy.
Before I elaborate let me say…
Neither the process nor the UI for the current implementation is elegant. Since Master Pages use Symbols, and Symbols in Affinity are buggy, there are bugs. The functionality is not feature complete and to be honest not stable enough for retail release. But the core functionality for basing Pages off a Master Page and making local variation is already working within Affinity Publisher.
    Follow along…
Create a new document. Create a Master Page. Add a Text Frame to your Master Page. Apply the Master Frame to Page 1. Duplicate Page 1 (so that you now have 2 identical pages). Ensure that you can see both the Layers Panel and the  Symbols Panel. Click the Sync button in the Symbols Panel (to turn off synchronization of symbols). Go to Page 1 and unlock the Master Layer . Select the Text Frame and type something. Note how the text appears on Page 1, but not on Page 2, nor the Master Page. Unlock the Master Layer on Page 2. Select the Text Frame and type something different. Note how Page 1 and 2 now have the same layout but different content. Click Sync in the Symbols Panel (to re-enable synchronization of symbols). Go into your Master Page and try moving the Text Frame. Note how the Text Frames on Pages 1 and 2 also move to the new position. In the Text Frame Panel change the fill and stroke of the Text Frame. Also resize and rotate the Text Frame on the Master Page. Note how all these attributes also change on Pages 1 and 2. Turn off sync, goto Page 1 and uncheck the visibility of the Text Frame. Note how it is hidden on Page 1 but not the Master or Page 2. Turn sync back on, go to the Master and add a Picture Frame. Click Place… and select 3 pictures from your file system. Apply the first to the Master Page Note how it appears on Pages 1 and 2. De-sync, then apply the second picture on Page 1 and the third on Page 2. Note how every page now shows a different picture. Re-Sync, and move the Picture Frames on the Master. Note how the pictures on all pages move. Things I noticed along the way…
When some attributes are desynced they take others with them. Change the content of text, and you also desync all other attributes of the text (font, font size, colour etc). Text Frames seem to move an resize more reliably that Picture Frames. The old bug where you end up with a new symbol every pixel when dragging a nested symbol reared its ugly head here. Right now the only way to see which attributes are in sync is to hover over the item in the layers panel, and read the tooltip. Not friendly. Although you can reapply the Master to reset everything, we could also do with the ability to re-link selected attributes, on specific objects. Still, I remain confused as to why Affinity are not actively promoting this feature since it has to be the most talked about issue on the entire forum!
