  1. For small objects/logo with few colors, I export each color as a JPG with embedded path, import them on to of each one, convert the paths to frames and delete the image inside and assign a fill.

I only do this with small icons or simple important logo I'll need on many files/issues. For the other ones, I simply export to PDF.

I mostly work in CMYK, and not sure how embedded SVG would end up, and can't allow logo with wrong/RVB colors.

  2. If you want to keep the vector part, use PDF files.

But always keep the option "Preview export on complete", to open the PDF and check it. Some parts can be rasterised when you don't want it to be, and checking this, and other problems in Adobe reader is really important depending of what you need or want to do with the files. Especially with complexe designs.

  3. Aside from the forum rules...

@Rebelartist You'd rather find a proofreader able to do a good job, and you just need to send her/him a PDF. Then, (s)he'll send you an annoted PDF or another document listing the required modifications, and asking you to validate some changes in text when (s)he'll find it need rephrasing.

And YOU'll do the corrections carefully in APub, to get you document perfect. If you're lucky, you'll have also comments about the document, the chapters or paragraphs order, etc., it's more a publisher's job, but external advices are always useful.

would it be possible to take benefit of this layer separation in INDD ?

Yes, for example, to keep different versions of a logo in vectors, I usually export to PDF when I use the Affinity apps.

This way, I could have 3 logos —  colors, white, grey levels — in a file, without needing to move the PDF inside the frame, just displaying a particular layer.

We could disable text on a map, or different elements if they are properly put in separate layers.

But it can also cause trouble, since part of a hidden PDF "stay" in the document, even if not visible. Pantone, text, etc. It's possible it will add problems when needing to export to print.

  5. It's January and the bug keep on.

The gradient is far away from the object, and it seems there's different problems (if it was on the same axis, it should be displayed on the object).

    So, there's 3 bugs:

    • The gradient is positioned too far from the object
    • The gradient position is wrong and it can't cover the object
    • There's no way to move the same gradient and have it on the canvas, and keep its angle, or the spots positions (lack of fields with values or options like in the Effect panel)

  6. We can't know if i's on the roadmap, and sadly, like using the file's origin folder instead of the last one used by the app, there's a lot of issues that impead day to day work.

It's worst when you use less the apps, and forget about all the tricks and issues you need extra clicks to avoid, and with time, you realize you spend more time using tricks/extra clicks than really working and being efficient :(

  7. Sorry William,

I was intentionaly away from the Internet, and didn't saw your post. It didn't happen in a long time, but yes, I can live at least a week without!

I remember seeing something once, I don't remember what it was, but it was seeking orders for a limited edition.

It then went on to claim that there were two traditional ways of having a limited edition. One was a fixed number and the other, used by them, was the number of people who subscribed.

So basically uit seemed that the offer was advertised and that when the offer closed that that many would be made and no more after that.

I know that for some people, who may or may not buy limited editions as an investment due to the limited number, value linited editions because they are limited.

For me if is a matter of whether I like the art, not whether it is a limited edition. I also tend to like the information content most, so a relatively inexpensive greetings card with the image is often fine for me.

Limited editions can be due to high cost, using better paper, way of printing, etc. It can be logical to give each one a number. The first edition of some rare books are always more valuable. It's the same idea.

For subscription, it can be used for small edition of books, like local historical ones, since the author(s) and the printer don't have funds to produce them.

It can also be done by design. Fr example we produce with a friend a book with illustrations from famous or less illustrators for another one as a Christmas present. Whatwas at first a small project became a 56 pages book, that we printed in 2 versions, a simple booklet one for thanking some of the illustrators that help the project, 3 nice issues for us, and a PDF version for each one. We expect the printer to not keep the plates or the file, and for the book to stay a small and personal one. Perhaps it'll be really valuable in the futur, but it wasn't mean this way, only for a personal, friendly and sentimental value :)

    About the "art":

If he can find people willing to pay £50 then why shouldn’t he regardless of what we think of it, good or bad?

Yes, some of us candosuch design or better, but whynot sell it... Irecently notice also that some frames — long time I didn't bought one — were sold with some printing inside, but it's just to give an idea of the result, in the verso there's instructions to properly set the different parts of the frame.

Long ago, a young buisnessman asked me why I spend so much time drawing or painting, when it was so easy doing "collages" to get patterns or decors for decorative objects that just need to be printed and sold...  Craftsmanship or industrialisation, the question has been raised for some industrial revolutions, and the answer is never easy, since beautiful things for all and particular ones have both their appeal. :)

Unless you are a serious collector of something

Probably most of the limited editions are just for collectors, or fans... and it can give ideas for presents, always usefull in such period.

Amongst the various custom things from a photo upload (or in practice a compatible file of artwork) is mugs.

There's a lot of possibility, but it often looks like Mother's days presents... and their multi-coloured noodle necklace, etc. It's the trend to give personalized presents, but really, I can't find any interest in having lamps with the children names' or other fast delivery Am*** "gifts".

Like for the "art", it depends of the buyer... with a bit of luck, he/she has good taste, or one similar to our!

  8. Why are you confused about my post @Thomas M. Braun ?

When I wrote it in 2018, the transform tools were just available for the first time in the first betas of APub, and since they are suited for vector work, it was logical to wait for them in AD. But since they were not listed in the official release note, it was important to mentionned them. You can ask questions if you don't understand something.

What I don't get is why anyone would want text that went right up to the edge of a page! Strikes me as pretty poor design, but I suppose each to his own! 😕

Pergaps you never notice documents using extra large text as decoration, going out in the bleed, or smaller text repeated multiple times as decoration and going out of the page. Or full background made of a pattern of characters... It's not a poor design, it's a choice, done by people playing with fonts and the characters themself.

  10. It's usually possible to add different gradients (using multiply or back/white to transparency) on the same mask like you would use different brush strokes to obtain/draw the mask you want... but in other apps. In Affinity apps, a gradient replace another (the mask react as a vector object when using a gradient), your only option is to use a brush, hoping you'll be as precise as you would be using a gradient.

Or use different nested masks on the same image, or other tricks.

  11. It's not fine because the stroke was converted to curves, and it can end up badly. Like two round shapes on each extremities, and some curves between them, instead of the nice "bean" you would have draw manually.

The problem is that Affinity apps convert badly the whole stroke in different shapes and add them, and this is this operation that is bugged. You can have nodes inside the new curve, the new path is iregular, like in the last image of your example.

I don't know enough about the Windows OSes to be certain but I do know that here on Mac the three applications have to be in their default locations. /Applications/Affinity Designer.app, /Applications/Affinity Photo.app, and /Applications/Affinity Publisher.app. If one isn't then Publisher won't see it as existing. I assume there is a similar situation with Windows OS.

I have the apps on a separate partition instead of C:'s usual folders, and there's no problem.

About the path for the licence, it's for example on my installation:

    J:\Affinity\Affinity Photo\licence.xml

Same for the other apps but APub bêta, since the first or older version named "Publisher Public Beta" was installed by default in "C:\Program Files\Affinity". So the licence.xml file should be by default in "C:\Program Files\Affinity\Affinity Designer", etc.

There's no licence.xml file in the APub folders, only for Designer and Photo and their bêta version.

    It's the same on Win7 and Win10.
