earl_grey reacted to chessboard in Frequent Lagging experienced in Affinity Desinger V2
@stokerg thanks for the link!
I tested the MSI/EXE install and I must say, that AD now feels so much snappier! I didn't test long (just 10 minutes for now, because of other things to do), but my first impression is, that the MSI-Version runs much more smoothly (even with OpenGL turned on). At the moment I can't see almost any delay between clicking an object on the canvas or in the layers palette and the object being highlighted. Even without real lagging, the MSIX-Version felt much stolid.
I hope that this impression will be confirmed as I continue to work.

Hi @A.R, @chessboard, @earl_grey, @M1000,
What CPU do you have? Also does disabling openCL in Preferences>Performance improve things for you?

Hello, I have a really annoying problem with Affinity Designer V2. When I'm working with any object when I switch between (mostly) Move tool and Node tool, it takes like 1 second to switch and the software seems lagged. I'm using the latest version 2. 0. 3. I'm sorry if this problem has been already discussed here.
Does anyone of you have the same problem or is it just me? If so, could you recommend me some kind of an advice?
Thanks in advance.

earl_grey reacted to UweJelting in Missing AutoTrace? I use Serif DrawPlus X6
Hi Folks,
I'm owner of the older Serif DrawPlus X6 programm. It works fine on Windows 10 and the vectorization tool it contains is perfectly adequate for my purposes. 😉 😊 DrawPlus X8 also have it.

earl_grey reacted to debraspicher in Designer V2, Object Blend Missing?
Hope this is added soon. I can do the simple repeatable object using a calculator and power duplicate. It's not a deal breaker. But as @NBG shares (BTW, +1 like, my other likes are currently on credit), it indeed somewhere near top of the list as it opens up so many possibilities. Especially for pattern, asset makers, etc... I still remember fondly hitting Expand on a very delicate pattern and running out of memory in AI... aaaah..

earl_grey reacted to Barry Meyer in Designer V2, Object Blend Missing?
On a quick look, Designer V2 has some impressive new features, and to be honest ones that I had never thought of and may prove extremely useful. But, unless I'm missing it, still no object blend. This is a much requested feature and a standard in vector software for about 30 years. I imagine I'll still get the upgrade, but this is extremely disappointing and forces me to use other software at times because this one feature is missing.

earl_grey reacted to Mithferion in Thanks - Some of the most wanted Features after 1.8 launch (and 1.9... and V2)
Hi there!
This topic is a word of encouragement and gratitud. Since last year, I had a list somewhere around the forums, of things that people wanted to see in the Affinity Suite. After this launch, and considering some features that came in 1.7, I wanted the thank the whole team for the following (Blue is for things launched in 1.7, Green is for 1.8, and now, red is for 1.9, purple is for 2.x)
Designer
Bleed area guides (now with the possibility to choose a color for it) Mesh Fill tool Mesh Warp/Distort tool Knife tool Scissors tool Calligraphic line styles Arrowhead line style Export slices with previews Export preview (not in Export Persona) Pages (like the ones in Fireworks) (Almost what we expected, but you never know if the allow to create more Pages directly in Designer) Multiple Effects/Fills/Strokes per shape (Not available for text, but it will come later) Replicate/Blend Convert Bitmaps to vectors (Auto tracing) Select same Color/Fill/Attribute (with some suggestion made by me, that I hope they can include them) Blob tool Spiral tool Width tool Paint Bucket tool Vector Eraser tool Vector Crop tool to do actual vector cropping (can be done with the Shape Builder Tool) Shape Builder tool Text Hinting support Prototyping capabilities Vector patterns Fixing the convert to curves problems at small sizes (improved to a great degree. Still needs improving in tiny cases) Fixing problems with Boolean operations "Universal Layers" using Artboards Contour Tool (hope it gets additional functionality in a future update) DXF/DWG Import DXF/DWG Export Photo
IPTC Support Smart Objects support (import only, and of course, not all possible Smart Objects) Better digital painting brushes (the double thing has proven to be very good) Tool Presets Crop to pixel selection Text on a path Publisher
IDML Import support IDML Export Data merge Global Layers / Layer tags ePub Export Color separation Footnotes / Endnotes Running Headers DXF/DWG Import All Apps
Saving custom workspaces DAM Application WebP Import/Export ICO Export BMP Export WMF Export in Mac TGA with alpha Channel Export CDR Import/Export PSD Export with editable text AI Import/Export Right-To-Left languages support Scripting/Extensibility User made Templates MS Windows Hardware acceleration Hope to change the color of more items from the above listing soon!

earl_grey reacted to Andy Somerfield in Affinity Photo Customer Beta (1.9.0.195)
Status: Beta
Purpose: Features, Improvements, Fixes
Requirements: Purchased Affinity Photo
Mac App Store: Not submitted
Download ZIP: Download
Auto-update: Pending
Hello,
We are pleased to announce the immediate availability of the first build of Affinity Photo 1.9.0 for macOS.
If this is your first time using a customer beta of an Affinity app, it’s worth noting that the beta will install as a separate app - alongside your store version. They will not interfere with each other at all and you can continue to use the store version for critical work without worry.
This beta is significantly different from the 1.8.4 version available for purchase - we strongly recommend that you do not use this beta for real work as data could be lost and the files you save are not guaranteed to open in previous / future versions of Affinity Photo.
Furthermore, massive behind the scenes work has been done to enable GPU acceleration for the Windows version of Affinity Photo in 1.9. In theory this should have no consequences for macOS / iOS users - but it’s likely that a couple of things will have become broken along the way. We are giving ourselves a longer beta period with 1.9 in order to find and fix those things.
This also means that the full complement of new features is not available yet in this 1.9 beta - more will be added over the coming weeks.
Thanks again for your continued support!
Affinity Photo Team
Changes Since 1.9.0
- Improved “Serif Labs” RAW engine.
- You can now single click a spare channel in the Channels panel to edit it like a layer.
- The Curves adjustment now has numeric field controls for precise positioning.
- Studio presets are now available.
- A benchmarking tool has been added in the help menu. It will only become available when no documents are open.
- Blend modes now work on “alpha only” layers (masks, adjustments, live filters, etc.).
- Added a new “Divide” blend mode.
- Added “Create from centre” for the elliptical marquee tool.
- Allowed snapping to the bounds of the pixel selection.
- Added ability to create brushes from the current pixel selection with one click.

To be notified when this Photo update comes out of beta and is fully released to all Affinity Photo on macOS customers, please follow this thread

earl_grey reacted to Jowday in Envelope warping, object-distort, perspective tool or fisheye tool?
I can see that I had access to the envelope, blend and extrusion tools since late 1991 in CorelDRAW 2.0 that was not even three years old at the time. 29 long years ago. It was actually Corel that made me love vector drawing even though I used Illustrator ever since at work. I remember these features in particular - envelope and blend served me well ever since, made a lot possible and a lot of workflows amazingly FASTER!
Serif released their first version of Serif DrawPlus two years later in 1993 but there is not much evidence of that in Affinity Designers draw persona after five years of development.
Now here is a couple of wonderful toolbar button and more for the dreamers:

earl_grey reacted to ACPhillips in NEED Envelope / Warp Tool
Why is there NO "Envelope" or "Warp" tool in Designer?! It's absurd! Envelope was there in Serif DrawPlus. Creating arc'd text (not on a path) is a BASIC text modification. With all the complex things Designer can do, why is this missing? This has been requested for years!

earl_grey reacted to Jowday in Free Transform, Perspective & Warp Tools
Rolling my eyes. We are not supporting a poor company in a third world country that hasn't got the funds to implement such features before several years pass. Affinity got both a lot of attention and hype and went far beyond a critical mass of paying customers. They are doing just fine. Wake up and smell the coffee!
This is not a kickstarter. You are paying customers and remember that this company is decades old and made similar more mature software with these features until recently (plus series). Did so for many years. You don't have these features because someone decided you shouldn't. Yet. Or ever. You don't know. It is all about business priorities and scaling. Designer obviously gets the least attention and features. I still don't believe Serif has the vector expertise or the required number of developers with this expertise to push Designer further in bigger steps than we have seen (tiny steps). I don't see the evidence. Publishing software was always Serifs pet project and flagship product so lets see if Designer ever gets the love and features it needs to become more than a tool for digital painters (bitmap). Niche software. Half of Designer - the pixel features - are shared with Photo. 99% of vector brushes are in fact pixel brushes. The other half is so feature weak it is depressing. The toolbar in the designer persona is mostly shapes. Shapes!
So it it perfectly valid to air criticism and wishes here. The very high number of posts with feature requests and customers asking in disbelief why nothing happened about this and that yet tells a story about where Designer should go to evolve and serve existing and potential customers. Stiff opposition from a core base of forum users (of which ever so few are more than hobby users with simple hobby needs and no insight whatsoever into more professional use and needs) is just not what is needed for Serif or from the customers requesting these features. It is ludicrous.
Cheap doesn't matter. As a vector drawing program Designer is not cheap because it has so few and just basic vector features. It doesn't cost "coconut money" whatever that is. Possibly an offensive term in Sweden. Designer is a simple product and you get only what you pay for. Not much more. Besides the great user interface that Serif really did well. Many small programs are actually often overpriced when you see how much you get for four times the price in professional software. But you will never reach that level of knowledge without experience and expertise. What REALLY is expensive in the short and especially long term is workarounds. Again something hobbyists doesn't see or feel.
So let the customers voice their concerns, wishes, criticism and input. Let Serif handle its unsatisfied (potential) customers and communicate the reasons for this and that. In a more professional tone.
