This is what made V2 difficult to work with for me. I understand what those lines are, but boy are they disruptive in my workflow. I get lost whenever I'm looking at those grey lines.. Also the dot is a "NO" for me, would prefer checkmark, and in front of the dot there is also a hidden(?) lock icon, which I discovered today.
And the selection bug which makes it harder to select objects behind text or other objects..

I have been using aff professionally since it was on PC.  I hate the new v2 system and i think its a very poor design. 

With that said and not to be an old man who hates changes, but what am i missing? what am i not using that makes it better than v1? I would just like to understand.

Thanks for your report!
I can confirm our developers are aware of an issue with certain fonts that use MORX tables, such as Devanagari - as unfortunately Affinity doesn't currently support these MORX table fonts, my apologies.
I will be sure to 'bump' the issue with our team now, as we hope to have these implemented in the future.

Like @walt.farrell said, it doesn't do that by itself. By default it is set to 'auto' (indicated in the numeric filed by parentheses around the displayed number), where the default is determined by the font size of the selection.
One not so obvious way to reset it to the default is to type just "()" in the Leading Override field (without the quotes). That will automatically set it to the default when you leave that field.

I experience myself a light / faint flicker when moving the mouse from the panels into the canvas and back. Moving the mouse only over the panels do cause no flicker. In my case the flicker is very subtle and my drivers are up-to-date.
