Hello Community! Question regarding fill layers, selection marquee and masks (in all applications of the suite, but especially in Photo due to my workflow in that app): I often find myself in a situation where I already have an active selection marquee and need to create a fill layer to which I want to apply this selection as a mask. Way to replicate this: With an active selection marquee, navigate to Layer → New Fill Layer. Click on New Fill Layer – the active selection marquee is now gone and an invisible, inaccessible, non-editable mask (?) is created/applied to the fill layer. (Unless I'm missing something). Question: How can I access this mask/delete the automatically generated invisible »mask«? Is there any way to change this behaviour? The Affinity Help mentions nothing about it. And yes, I know there are a few workarounds for this. 😉 For example, plan ahead and create the fill layer first, or select the newly generated fill layer with the invisible mask and convert it into a regular mask, and so on. But this is not always so easy and costs at least a few extra steps that I would like to save myself. Expected behaviour: I would rather have the selection converted and applied as a normal mask to the fill layer or remain an active selection. Cheers and happy weekend Dennis

@NathanC and @NotMyFault, thanks both of you! 👍 Nathan, you're right, it was linked to the display settings you mentioned! But is that how it's supposed to work, shouldn't the guides always be visible, no matter what setting is used there? I haven't checked how it looks on Windows yet. NotMyFault, I saw this option, but because of the display setting Nathan mentioned, some guides were missing here too – so yes, this is exactly the grid setup I need! Cheers! Oh yes, before I forget: What about the ability to change the degree of the up axis – should it always be fixed? Or should it also be changeable?

Hm, nope … does nothing for me. I’m on Mac OS version 13.3.1 (22E261) and working with 2.0.4 as well. 🤔

Ah, I guess that could be it? The panel does show it somewhat correctly, but in the document itself an axis is missing? Curious.

I'm probably missing something here … I'm trying to set up a triangular grid with a tilted up axis, but the settings are inaccessible to me in any way. I'm trying to get a grid that looks like this, where Z axis = Up axis and every axis is tilted by exactly 30°. But all I can produce is this, with the up axis always remaining inaccessible for some reason (the check boxes don't change anything in this regard even if they are checked/unchecked): I also would like to avoid using the Cube Raster Model because I don't need it for my project and I don't always want to switch between the planes. Any tips on how I can achieve what I am looking for are very welcome! Cheers! Dennis Edit: A simple solution would of course be to work on the design in a tilted grid and rotate it at the end. But this is not very intuitive or advantageous because you don't have the actual result in front of your eyes until you rotate it.

I'm always amazed how much plasticity a simple Lighting filter can add to an otherwise rather flat image. I used the Paint Mixer Brush quite extensively, painting over a stock photo of a lily with a coarse bristle brush and adding some layer effects. This was just for fun and to unwind, nothing serious. 😌 I thought I'd share it anyway, maybe it inspires someone to try something similar. 😊 Cheers!

Here is a step-by-step guide for replicating the issue: Required hardware: Two monitors or one monitor and a pen display similar to the model above. Required software: Affinity Photo/Designer/Publisher, latest official release and/or latest beta release. Required monitor configuration/arrangement: See screenshot above. Steps for replicating the problem: Launch application, for example Affinity Photo. Open existing document or create a new document. Create a new layer. Apply Live Adjustment or Live Filter to the new layer. The properties window with various settings for the Live Adjustment or Live Filter automatically opens as expected on the main screen right next to the Layers palette. Select the parent layer or another layer to get the property window to disappear. Click on the Live Adjustment or Live Filter again. The properties window with various settings for the Live Adjustment or Live Filter automatically opens unexpectedly on the second screen directly at the top of the screen, regardless of whether it is currently switched on or not.

Hey @Callum, Unfortunately yes, this is still happening in the latest beta of Photo and Designer. 🤔 Presumably Publisher as well but havent installed the beta for it. I'm not very good at recording screens on Windows, otherwise I would have provided a clip. But I don't think it would work anyway, because it would have to capture two screens at once, and I'm not sure how to set that up, to be honest. 😅 Thanks for your reply!

Hey there, very similar to another much older thread, I have a problem with filter/adjustment windows opening on a different display, a pen display to be precise, instead of the expected main screen. Most of the time, especially when precision is needed, the pen display is turned off but remains connected to the computer. Resetting Studio, as suggested in the mentioned thread, only works if done via Master Reset (holding a specific key while launching the application), and even then only the first time a filter/adjustment is clicked. After the first time it behaves as above. It's incredibly frustrating because, you have to switch focus to another screen and turn it on (because it doesn't matter whether it's on or off!) while you're working on the main one every single time and leave it running just to move the properties window over to the main screen. Some information about hardware: OS: Windows 10 Home, Version 21H2 Pen Tablet Modell: HUION Kamvas 13 GT-133 Pen Tablet Driver: Driver_15.7.4.183 The expected main screen is connected via DVI, the pen display is connected via HDMI + USB for input. Something I noticed: The expected main screen is shown as »2«, the pen display as »1« in the system's monitor settings – but I can't reassign these numbers, and I'm not sure they actually reflect the primary and secondary monitors. I assume that the taskbar would actually act as an indicator of what the primary and secondary monitors are, and since it's on my regular monitor, I assume it was the primary monitor. If anyone could help me solve this problem it would be greatly appreciated as it is slowly but steadily draining my creative juices. 🪫 Cheers! Edit: This affects the whole suite, not just Photo!

Expected Behaviour: I create a new mask and make my first stroke, which I'm not happy with. I press Ctrl+Z to undo the stroke, the mask remains and I can start with an empty mask. Current Behaviour: I create a new mask and make my first stroke, which I'm not happy with. I press Ctrl+Z to undo the stroke, but the mask is also undone. I have to add a new mask every time I want to undo the first stroke. It's like I'm hitting Ctrl+Z twice, but I'm not. Steps to reproduce: Create a layer. Add mask to it. (Tested with Mask, not Empty Mask or Compound Mask, since I want to work with a regular Mask in that instance.) Make a brush stroke. Hit Ctrl+Z. Bug or by design? Workaround for now: Create an Empty Mask and in the next step invert it.

Increasing/Decreasing shape properties with Arrow Keys
Mr. Doodlezz replied to Mr. Doodlezz's topic in V2 Bugs found on macOS
Even more so the fact that you can't use tab to properly navigate from one property field to another (and so, so many other areas) bugs the hell out of me, constantly stops me in my tracks, and is just lamentable, because (to me) it’s one of those really, really basic things that need to work. It's a nightmare when you think about accessibility. Oh, the clicks, the unnecessary distance travelled by the cursor when it could all be just a tab away. 🫠 Admittedly, I always try to use tab, knowing that it won't work. It's just so ingrained in my workflow from other applications. 🥲 But I guess, no, I hope Affinity is working on it. The use-tab-to-jump-layers-for-quicker-renaming-teaser on Instagram made me hope so for that one. -
Hey there, I have the following issue (in all applications of the suite): Expected/Previous Behaviour: In V1 it was possible to use the arrow keys to change shape properties such as number of points on a star, sides on a polygon, hole radius on a doughnut etc. using the arrow keys right after a shape was drawn. As someone who does most things with shortcuts and generally uses the keyboard most of the time, this was very handy, intuitive and yet precise! Current Behaviour: Unfortunately, in V2 and even in the beta versions, this no longer operates as it used to: It is only possible to change by one value up or down once right after creating a shape. Any further arrow-keystrokes now unexpectedly leave the propertie-field and suddenly shifts the shape on the artboard! You are now either 1. forced to deselect the shape in order to get the previous behaviour 2. change the values by using definite values or 3. by using the mouse and slider tucked away in the property field. I don't find it intuitive to enter a concrete value during the discovery phase, and changing the value with the mouse on the slider on the other hand feels too imprecise for me, especially when it comes to percentages or degrees. Deselecting and re-selecting the shape also seems like an unnecessary extra step added wich breaks the flow. Is there a reason for this behaviour? Is it a bug, is it by design? Here's a clip about what I mean. I would be very happy to see this working as it did in V1. The problem exists in both, the official releases and the betas. Greetings

Well, not to the community. (So as not to raise hopes, I suppose). However, according to FontBase, they themselves tried to contact Serif, but didn't get a reply. I thought from one company to another there might be some mutual interests/benefits – but I guess not.

Option to reset Window/palette position
Mr. Doodlezz replied to stewart_whaley's topic in V1 Bugs found on Windows
Sorry, but it seems that you have ignored the essence of my comment and parroted Stewart's in more detail: Again, it's not working. Having to reset the entire studio after every single live filter or adjustment edit. That has to be a joke, right? That's incredibly inconvenient! Furthermore, a simple studio reset via the menu without a complete restart of the application doesn't even work. The application has to be completely closed and reopened for the palette positions to be reset. (At least for me.) I don't want my pen tablet screen to be active all the time just because the pop-ups are displayed there instead of on my main screen. I have no trouble using workarounds that work around a problem – not creating new ones! – while the culprit is actually getting fixed. This issue was first brought up about two years ago – and as it turns out it still hasn't been fixed. So how long am I supposed to use the proposed workaround that's not working … another two years of resetting/restarting the app every two minutes, or maybe until V3 gets released? This is incredibly annoying to me at this point, as you may have gathered. -
This works to some extent and without any other plug-ins or the like – thanks, I did not know that the Infer LUT would do this! I will tinker with it. 😃

Hi there! I've had this question a few times over the years but haven't found a solution. I used to use Photoshop's Match Colour option regularly and miss it dearly. Sabacan looks like exactly what I need, but I'm using Windows. Does anyone know of any similar software for Windows?

Hey there, I am currently running into the problem of recording an affine transformation with changeable values in the negative range into a macro. It is possible to set negative values during recording and at any given time. However, if you change the recorded value, for example from the originally recorded -1% to -5%, it does not take. The originally recorded negative value is displayed as such, but as soon as you insert another negative value, it simply converts to 0 and the transformation therefore resets. Below is a test macro with a negative transformation. Please try to set the value to -20 (or any other negative value) while playing it. Try the same outside the macro using Filters → Distort → Affine. Is there a way to make this work? Am I using the filter incorrectly? Is there a better way to wrap this into a macro? Thanks! Option to reset Window/palette position
Mr. Doodlezz replied to stewart_whaley's topic in V1 Bugs found on Windows
I still have this problem and it's starting to drive me crazy. The workarounds don't help either, since I don't see how resetting the whole studio after every live filter edit is a passable workaround. 😣 Edit: I just noticed this thread is about V1 – I however already run V2 and have this issue. -
Most likely correct. In the thread mentioned by RNKLN, there is talk of it working magically for some Mac users. I was hoping for similar news for Windows users.

You are referring to the thread I came across. It's a thread about V1, which is most likely no longer in active development now that V2 is out. Therefore the thread is in the »Feedback & Suggestions Feedback for the Affinity V1 products [ARCHIVE]« section. It's archived in the sense that it's not closed, but because of the above I assume it's no longer active or moderated either. I'm not sure if this is also a pointer, but there is no moderator monitoring this thread, at least openly visible. I'm not a fan of duplicate threads, but I think it can't hurt to bring this topic back to the forefront and revive it for V2, as it hasn't been resolved yet (not that I know of). There was no response from staff then (unless I missed something?), so perhaps someone can give us an update this time.

Are there any updates on automatic font activation for font manager applications, both Mac and Windows? There were at least two threads in the past that I could find, now archived, but there was never a real answer from Serif/Affinity as to if and when this feature would finally be integrated. The latest news is that FontBase has tried to contact Serif on several occasions (according to a thread in their forum), but has not received any response. I would love to be able to use this super handy feature of Fontbase, or by now almost any other font manager out there, together with Affinity Suite, but nothing seems to have happened in this area for years.
