    Hi Affinity Team,

I would like to use the Elgato Stream Deck with the multi-action hotkeys it offers. This allows me to assign the most important functions of my workflow to one key and thus speed up the workflow.

However, this fails because a selected menu has no focus at all, so I can't enter any values in the input menus using the keyboard (as descriped in this thread before)

Example: In Live Unsharp Mask, the default values (Radius 0px, Factor 0.5, Threshold 0%) make little sense. I would therefore like to set the focus on the Radius input field. This is not possible without using the mouse (IMHO). Strangely enough, I can enter a value for the opacity using the numeric keyboard. However, I cannot move the focus from there to the other input fields.
In my opinion, it would therefore be helpful if these functions had a defined start focus when called, so that values can be inserted automatically with defined keyboard sequences.

Despite announcements of improvements months ago, there has been little to no change regarding navigation with keys like tab and enter/return or other means in a very, very long time.
I'm not sure what the cause is, but I guess fixing persistent issues that don't break functionality for most users has been ranked lower repeatedly in favour of implementing new features.

    Hi @Mr. Doodlezz,

I believe this is occurring due to the fact that all Basic app brushes have the 'Wet Edges' behaviour set as 'Don't Set' which means Wet Edges behaviour can be inherited from a previous brush used if the setting was ever turned on at any point when using the erase brush tool (from the brush edit menu NMF referenced earlier). Here's what you could try:

    1. Select the Eraser Brush
    2. Choose one of the basic round brushes in the brushes panel
    3. Swipe Left on the brush in the brushes panel > 'Edit Brush'
    4. Set 'Wet Edges' to 'Set Off'
    5. Set that brush to the associated tool for the Eraser Brush and save your changes
    6. With that brush selected, go to the Edit menu > defaults > Sync and then repeat again but 'Save'

Going forward in all new documents should default to that specific brush, and with it's behaviour set to 'Set Off' if you were to change what brush you want to use with the eraser the 'Dont Set' behaviour by default would remember that the previous brush had the behaviour was set to Off, meaning it would inherit this behaviour, unless you were to then change to a Brush with the Behaviour set to 'Force On'.

Doing this once with a single brush should hopefully prevent this and save you the trouble of configuring every single brush, and you always have an associated tool to go back to if the wet edges behaviour changes again to reset it back to Off.

Thanks, @NathanC, that indeed solved it!
What a strange workaround. Is this knowledge expected of us users? I've been using the Affinity Suite every day (well, every app from day one, as soon as they where available, that is), and I've never encountered this behaviour or heard of handling this setting in such a way. 🤔
I guess you never stop learning. 😅

And I guess @NotMyFault was somewhat on the right track after all!

Have you tried my suggestion of changing the Assistant Settings?

    Thanks for your tip/suggestion, @walt.farrell.
It’s not really what I’m after, and since it’s already set to Smart tip sharing I guess it’s not working as intended? But that’s a topic for another day I guess. 🫥

I experimented to see how the other Affinity apps manage this. And surprisingly, the Photo Persona within Publisher behaves just as I would anticipate the standalone Photo app should and what I think how it also worked at some point; choosing the same brush from the library in different tools shows a consistent image, whether it’s the brush or eraser. For the brush with a smooth edge, it appears as follows:

What happens if you deactivate wet edges in the brush settings

Again, I don’t want to change any individual brush settings, not sure how to articulate this any clearer. 🤔

no need to do anything global.

Well, I don’t want to change the setting for every individual brush in my 100+ collection. Literally every brush behaves like shown in my video, having wet edges.

So it doesn't matter which brush tip I choose, because almost all brushes come without a specified specification in their settings. And since wet edge is not specifically defined in most standard brushes, the global setting is applied, which, as now mentioned several times, has been activated somewhere for inexplicable reasons.

    –––

    Hi,

it depends on your intended use of brushes wrt wet edges, and what brushes you need to erase.

    1. Do you need wet edges for any brush / any tool?
      1. set wet edges to off for all relevant brushes.
    2. can you live with the basic round brush for erase?
      1. create a basic round brush, save in a new brush categorie. Set associated tool to erase tool set set edges to off.

    i would suggest to

    • export your self-crated brushes, and reset brushes.
    • deactive wet edges for all relevant brushes
    • the wet edges setting while using erase brush is available under „more“, clicking the small thumbnail of the brush (one left to you red question mark)

Thanks, but you outlined the precise steps I'm keen to avoid. 😅

I have no intention of adjusting this for each brush individually. There must be a way to toggle »wet edges« globally for the eraser, similar to what's possible with the paintbrush, as seen in my initial screenshot.

Essentially, I want to utilise the standard soft-edged brush as the eraser. However, it seems the eraser's (hidden?) global settings have switched to »wet edges on,« unless the individual brush has a different preference within its settings (the settings you mention).

Again, I'm not looking to adjust this setting for every single brush. I just need the global »wet edges« setting deactivated.

I've screen captured my current process: Draw using the soft-edged brush without wet edges, then switch to the eraser – exact same brush, 100% opacity – with no option whatsoever to adjust wet edges. Yet, the eraser operates with both transparency and wet edges, even though you should expect it to mirror the paintbrush counterpart just used. Does this make sense?

  6. Hey everyone!

For some reason, every brush I'm using is set to »wet edges« when I select the eraser tool, and I can't find the option to disable it globally for this tool. I don't plan on setting each individual brush to »wet edges off,« as that's super impractical and bothersome. There's a dedicated button in the toolbar for the brush painting tool:

    IMG_0065.thumb.jpeg.544946e17e585d2a93c8ff7694b0ce6e.jpeg

But it's missing for the eraser tool, and according to its behaviour it must have turned on somehow at some point:

    IMG_0066.thumb.jpeg.799850090412dc257addb113ec5d3b59.jpeg

Does anyone have any idea? Am I missing something?

    Greetings
    Dennis

The thread changed from being able to format dates in APub to custom formatting in Excel not being transferred into APub during a data merge.

But the answer is the same--there is no option that I understand for calculated future dates (no spreadsheet-like calculations at all). Without creating a sample, I don't know if an Excel sheet using such calculations would come in intact, either.

Sure, a lot of people have taken the discussion in a different direction. Maybe those folks just aren't the right ones to answer my question since I'm not bringing up spreadsheet tasks or issues with data merging.

I'm asking about the feature that this thread originally focused on, and I believe it still does, according to the first page and the thread's title. It's still custom date formatting for fields started by Ash to highlight and help with this exact feature, isn't it? (Just wondering if it’s actually me being the one off-track with my question here.)

Anyway, you might be right, and there seems to be no way to achieve what I want, at least none that I've found, which is similar to what =TODAY() + 30 does in Excel – too bad!

On macOS, "in the cloud" works with Pro or Free accounts, according to the Dropbox Help, and depending on the macOS release you have. To set "available offline" you need the Pro account.

From that, I presume that if you look in Files you might still see that the file is only in the cloud, if you haven't actually tried to Open it yet. In that case, you'll have a Cloud icon by the file, in Files.

I was just about to edit my reply. 😄

So, yes, I checked – it's not locally available on iPadOS, there's always the little cloud-download-icon next to it. If I try to make it or the whole folder locally available it prompts me with a subscription.

So I guess this settles it then? I wish this was communicated more clearly in the Affinity Handbooks. 😞

When you look in Files, does the Linked .afdesign fine show that it's present on your iPad, or is it only in the cloud?

Thanks again for checking! Sorry, I tried to imply that I do not own a Dropbox Pro subscription with my previous reply and wasn't quite clear enough. 😅
I assumed it would work with any kind of Dropbox account, even the free one since I do not intend to get a subscription just for this feature to work. But I guess it's not working then?

I really wish staff could give us a quick and definitive answer on this matter before I jump to conclusions. 🫤

OK, I've now upgraded my Dropbox account so I can use the iPad as well as my other 3 devices. I then:

    1. Created a .afdesign file on Windows.
    2. Created a .afpub file on the iPad, with the Placement Policy set to Linked.
    3. I looked in the Files app on the iPad, and checked the Dropbox folder. It showed the .afdesign file from step 1 as being in the cloud.
    4. I Placed the .afdesign file into the .afpub document. It worked fine, and checking in Files again showed the .afdesign file had been downloaded.
    5. I then Saved the .afpub file into Dropbox, and moved back to Windows.
    6. I Opened the .afpub file from Dropbox, and was told that the Linked file was modified. Resource Manager confirmed this. And an Update in Resource Manager removed the Modified status. This is odd, as I had not touched the .afdesign file after step 1 except for Placing it.

I don't know if any of these Help articles from Dropbox will be relevant to you. They are about macOS, not iPadOS, but perhaps are relevant depending on your macOS setup, I suppose:

    https://help.dropbox.com/installs/dropbox-for-macos-support

    https://help.dropbox.com/installs/macos-support-for-expected-changes

Ok, so it doesn't say it's missing for you, right? For me, it clearly states it's missing, a.k.a. it can't simply be updated via the resource manager but has to be completely relinked. On iPadOS, that's quite the tedious process if you need to replace the same file repeatedly, having to navigate to the file each time.

Well, I’d even take my chances to do this – if it just would work! 😞
But as mentioned the link to the file immediately changes back to missing.

Maybe the devs can give an answer on this?

  11. Hey @walt.farrell, were you maybe able to re-create this issue?

I have another suspicion: I believe you need to enable the »Make available offline« option for the folder. However, this feature seems to be only available to Dropbox Plus users associated with a monthly fee.

If this is actually the case, the Linked Services functionality isn't operating as I'd expected and lacks a bit of clarity in the Affinity handbook/s.

    Do I have this correct?

    1. You have a Designer file with multiple Artboards, stored in Dropbox.
    2. You have the Dropbox application configured on your iPad, macOS, and Windows.
    3. You have Dropbox configured as a Linked Service in Settings for Publisher on your iPad, and I presume also on macOS and Windows.
    4. You create a Publisher document on the iPad, with the document Placement Policy set to Prefer Linked.
    5. You Place the Designer file from Dropbox into the document.
    6. The Resource Manager immediately shows the Linked file as Missing?

    Exactly.

  13. Hey community,

I'm having issues getting files to stay linked in Affinity Publisher on my iPadOS, using Dropbox.

When I link an Affinity Designer file on Dropbox with the Linked Services feature enabled and set up, the files don't stay linked at all. Plus, I'm unable to select other artboards within that particular Affinity Designer file. To provide more context:

    • I was able to succesfully link other file types on Dropbox.
    • iCloud isn't an option for me in this scenario, and I haven't explored it.
    • I have tested the recent 2.2 update, no difference in behaviour, files are immediately marked as missing in the resource tab.
    • This issue hasn't surfaced on either MacOS or Windows. There, linking works fine, and I can also select different artboards after I linked an Affinity Designer file on Dropbox.
    • A speculation I have is that maybe when linking a file within Affinity Publisher on iPadOS, it loads the file just for placement and then deletes it right post-placement, causing the link to break.

Given this, has anyone encountered something similar or can offer advice on what might be the culprit? It completely breaks my workflow over different devices.

    Many thanks for any guidance!

While I agree that there is a bug here (the corner rounding should of course not vanish), I don't think it is a bug with the shape builder tool...

Try recreating your star shape using the regular Boolean tools, and you will see the same behaviour. Perhaps not surprising as the underlying calculations are probably the same.

Try drawing your star shape with the pen tool. You will now find that you can't even apply corner rounding!

The corner tool really doesn't like the incredibly fine points of the star that are formed when the control handles are perfectly aligned to the vertical (or horizontal). If you move one of the control handles very slightly away from the other (zoom in to 10,000% first so it is a microscopic movement), then corner behaves correctly when mirrored.

So I'd suggest that the issue is with the corner tool itself.

You're absolutely right! I didn't mean to specifically point at the Shape Builder Tool – it was just my initial thought when testing.
I see now how the Corner Tool might be the main culprit given its behavior with other sharp points, so thanks for pointing it out. (No pun intended.)
